DCA's area, building and queue:

Queue (mini-museum):

Seems pretty nice to me.
I probably should clarify. Yes, I do remember the queue itself was a lot more detailed, but I was talking about shear size of it. I also didn't get to see much of the detail because no one was there besides myself and about 10 other people, so it was a very quick walk through. Give me a small break that was almost 8 years ago, still the development was still charged to DCA and it would have been a lot higher then it was at Epcot for that reason alone. That said, I still think that $500,000. in Epcot is way, way low.

I suppose if you include Research and Development and engineering costs on the original that wasn't needed on the WDW one, it might be close. But considering the cost of the show building alone, the second one seems a little low.
But to EPCOT's costs need to be added the cost for the settlement out of court with this guy who wrote on a DCA questionaire 'You know, Soarin' is way fun, you people should clone this ride in Orlando'.

Somewhere out there, there is a clueless guy who really remains utterly convinced he is responsible for TWDC cloning DCA's most succesful ride. Clueless, but well rewarded.

500,000 is absurd. No way was the price that low. It's beyond way low.

They really knocked it out of the park with composer Jerry Goldsmith, who was said to be so moved by the attraction that he scored it for free. :P

Didn't they build a massive steel A-Frame over the building just so they didn't have to put a mesh on the sides of the vehicles? That alone would of cost millions. Plus the whole ride system was a mechanical giant that would not have been cheap with R&D and actual build costs.

They did a lot of R&D on this one, even as far as taking a star tours vehicle and playing test footage on it. And the whole video is filmed using the highest quality cameras for back then suspended from a helicopter. Filming would have taken a couple weeks at least.

My guess, somewhere around $30 million for the ride itself.

And on the topic of what's nicer Epcot or DCA. DCA wins by a long shot. It just upsets me seeing Condor Flats as such a wasted area!

There are a lot of variables to factor in - are you looking for straight building expenses, or building expenses + video production, or creative hours + building expenses + video production (including talent payment and music use)? Lots of ways to answer your question.

Someone mentioned above that RSR is the most expensive ride at any Disney park - but what is the most expensive ride at WDW? My guess would be ToT...

Everest around $100m in 2006, ToT around $85m in 1994 - which was about $111m when Everest opened.

Question is which was better value?
Better ride? ToT
Better Value? Everest. Was that cost including the whole Asian section added outside? Plus the giant facade is amazing, the queue is great and the ride (even without the yeti) is spectacular.

My opinion but ;)
