How does dining work on the disney dream?

At Castaway Cay, Disney's private island, it's much like the dining onboard. Ice cream, BBQ, burgers, sodas, etc. etc. is included. Specialty and alcoholic drinks will be an additional charge. To pay on CC you will need to use your key to the world card (room key). When at Nassau you can dine on the island if you want but you'll have to pay out of pocket (cash). You can treat the ship like a hotel where the food is free and just eat there before and after you go out on the island.
We didn't eat on CC so I can't vouch for the food, etc. there. I'm not at all a beachy girl. We kept our time out on the island to a minimum. No eating.

We were as crazed as any WDW fan family. Believe me! We have evolved to where we were and are looking for new Disney experiences. I never in a million years thought of myself as a cruise person. I don't really even like the beach! After seeing the reports after the Dream came out I started thinking about it and giving it consideration. I figured if there was a cruise that would be for me it would need to be Disney. There's so much to do there's no way to be bored. We found the cruise every bit as enjoyable as a parks trip if not more because everything was new & exciting to us!
There's really no waiting to be seated at the main dining rooms. You show up at your designated time and get seated. I guess if there's a lot of folks waiting to sit you may wait a few minutes but it would be very minimal. I loved that!
Aside from the Disney cruises we're itching to get out to California to Disneyland and then to Japan to Tokyo Disney. We are in no hurry to go back to WDW. It's strange to say that....

Yes, on Castaway Cay there is lots of food and it's all (excluding alcohol and specialty drinks) free!
I think the food on CC is excellent, but it could be because we are always starving after spending several hours on the beach and or snorkeling.
The soft serve ice cream is excellent, although they've stopped serving the best flavor I've ever had.
In the afternoon they put out a bunch of snacks like finger sandwhiches and cookies.
It's great!
If you eat off the ship in Nassau, you'll be on your own dollar.

One thing I really look forward to at Disney's Magic Kingdom is a Dole Whip! On the dream or at Castaway Cay what would everyone recommend that it is out of this world.I love things that you can't just get anywhere

We had meals from 'good' to 'amazing'. Each restaurant has a different menu. It's way more then what you see at the parks.. the closest comparison would be EPCOT's food. Each menu had probably 4 or 5 choices per course. Each meal has a starter, main course, and desert. Many had soup and salad rounds too.
There is no 'reservation' time so to speak. You have a fixed dining time, that when you walk in there are literally dozens of servers ready to walk you to your table. Walk in late is ok too. Only remy and palo have reservation times and I heard no complaints about waits there (we didn't eat there). The counter service and buffet locations are all basically walk right up.
The only thing I didn't expect was I thought the food locations would be open later. Past dinner time, usually only one or two of the counter service places were open (for like pizza) but room service is 24hrs.
It certainly is much higher level overall then what WDW is doing these days.. its much more akin to the WDW of the 70s and 80s where everything was done at a 'deluxe' level. There is no 'value' level of setting or experience on the boat.. everything is deluxe

We are going on a 4 night cruise on the Dream. When do we find out what night we will be assigned to each dining location? We have heard so many good things about Animator's that we do not want to make a reservation for one of the speciality restaurants on our assigned night at Animator's. Thank you!

Not until you check in unfortunately. If you give me your party make up I can give you an educated guess.
Although this has been answered well, I love telling someone who hasn't been on a cruise about how it works.
Basically, you wake up, have a snack, then have pre-breakfast, then breakfast. Then an after breakfast snack, then pre-brunch snack, the brunch, then a snack, then pre-lunch in the buffet, then lunch in the dining room, then dessert, then another dessert, then a snack, then tea-time, then a pre-dinner snack in the buffet, then dinner in the dining room, then dessert, then dessert, then dessert, then you go to the buffet to browse the desserts. Then maybe a sandwich or pizza, then room service.
And everything I just said is included in the cruise price.
The question about quick service for lunch and the dining room for dinner made me smile. I thought in a very similar manner before my first cruise. In fact, the first time we went to lunch in the buffet on the lido deck, I got out my room key because I thought maybe it needed to be scanned or something.
But someone else said it best, everything about dining at disney world...forget it. This is a totally different universe.

I see & feel the wisdom in cruising over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Combine the cruise-glutton with the holiday-glutton in a combined effort to save from 3 seperate occurances per year. Hadn't thought of that before! Thank you!!!!

This is a guess, but it will probably be Animators, Enchanted Garden, Royal Palace, Royal Palace. Disney likes to start families with young kids in Animators.
Disney's been messing with it a little lately. They used to always repeat the 2nd night's restaurant on the 3rd night, but some recent cruisers have reported repeating the 3rd night on the 4th night.

When did this start? We've only EVER (in 12 cruises) repeated a restaurant on the next night, and that was when every restaurant served the same menu for Christmas dinner. Then you stayed in that restaurant for the next night and had the normal menu.
Why would they keep you in the same restaurant on back-to-back nights? Why not just continue with your "rotation"?

I have never understood their logic on that. They've done it for a while on 4 nighters. That's what the Dream has been doing too, but they've switched it to repeating the 3rd night.
The menu changes of course. The 3rd night is pirate night and the 4th night is the rotational dinner.
