How do some friends of characters get away with slacking off while others give 100%?

And as far as servers at places like Prime Time go, it's mostly the fact that they hired them as servers and not as performers. If you hire someone as a server you can't exactly expect them to perform the duties of a character without the pay premium.

I disagree. When someone is hired as a Prime Time server, they can be told what the expectations of the position are and what the salary compensation will be for that position. They can then make a decision on whether or not they want the position. I doubt anyone taking that job doesn't know what the expectations are.

True, maybe. But do you think Disney honestly has people beating down its doors to work for possibly demanding and possibly cheap customers all day, while trying to remain in character? I doubt it. To get that kind of person in there Disney would have to up the ante quite a bit I'm sure, or find a surplus of people who truly, truly love acting that way.

But the catch there is that they are classified as servers, just like at any other restaurant. Just as other discussion on Jungle Cruise skippers and Kilimanjaro Safari Guides....even though their role includes a script and they do what most of us would be considered acting, their jobs are not classified as such. If that were so, they would be covered under a different (read higher) payscale and management system.

99% sure that safari drivers get paid a premium compared to other Ops positions.

That's a completely different deal. Maybe not. But that doesn't mean you lower your standards and expectations. If they can't get what they want at the current wage scale that have to ante up some more of the greatest motivaters ever invented ... the moolah!

Of course. But Disney hasn't done that.

In all honesty it's because Disney is desperate. They can't afford to be picky about friends of characters. quote]

This surprises me for some reason!! Maybe I'm naive but I always imagined people would be queuing round the block for a job as a friend!! I would love to do it personally...but then I don't know much about it!!!

There are plenty of people that would be willing to do it, but not enough people who are both willing and qualified if that makes any sense.

Back in 2000, my family did the character breakfast at 1900 Park Fair. We were seated in a small room off of the large main room. My sister and I went to the restroom, and as we were coming back, Mary Poppins was standing just outside the room were were going to. My sister and I unfortunately heard her say to the server standing next to her, "Ugh, I really wish I didn't have to be here."

Having family and friends who were/are CMs (Entertainment specifically for some) I can say that they would NEVER say something like that on stage. We reported her. I'm sorry, but what if I had a little kid with me? How would I explain that MP doesn't want to see my child (it was all adults in our party, though)?

Apparently somebody really needed a second spoonful of sugar :D

I completely agree with this! When I was a CM there in 2002, the cast members who had "bad attitudes" or "slacked off" were not tolerated. When I went back (a few months after Mission Space opened) and chatted with my previous manager about the "difference in cast attitude" that I had noticed (some of the cast was beyond rude to us at our hotel as well as at the parks!), he mentioned to me that it's because they are having a lot of trouble getting and keeping (which I understand, since you can't live on fairy dust ;) ) good cast members and have to "settle" for some of the "warm bodies" we are discussing in this thread. It was really frustrating for them too, he wasn't making excuses he was just telling it like it has gotten. I know it hasn't gotten any better since then, so we get "stuck" having the "best and the worst" on our trips... its too bad the Disney experience isn't still maintained though!

My suggestion as a previous cast member is if you see someone who is doing a great job and going above and beyond what other "cast" has been doing for you, check out their name tag, where they work, etc and go to guest services or ask for a manager at the location, and :sohappy:TELL SOMEONE!:sohappy: The cast shouldn't be the only one who spreads the Disney magic! I make it a point to make sure at least one cast member who did a superb job that I noticed gets recognized each trip I go on. (When I was a cast member I used to get these from families who felt I really added the "magic" to their vacation, and it really felt great to be recognized for it... in fact I still have every one of the "paws-a-grams" that I received when I worked at DAK).

No matter how many times I've visited Whispering Canyon and 50's Prime Time, we are ALWAYS the table that gets no attention while all the other tables are doing crazy stuff. Sometimes we even get really wild and funny servers who focus on giving some of their tables a blast, while we just get normal Applebees type service.

I wonder if I give off a bad aura or something. I'm always really nice to servers and tip well so I don't know what the deal is!

As mentioned above, "Entertainment" and "acting" isn't listed as actual work they do, they just need to do it because that's the Cast Member difference Disney is expecting.

One of these days we will have to set up breakfast with our two families at WCC. We always request MT and even if we don't get her she will make regular visits to the table. She never disappoints and just wait until I tell her that you are the shy type.:drevil:

You're right...I think was people are trying to get at however is that it's one thing to tell me I'm supposed to be a "certain character" and to follow a general script while working at 50's prime time, it's quite another for Disney to actually evaluate that performance, provide training and perform ongoing evaluation.

Maybe compare it to a regular server....if they can't manage to set a table correctly, don't record orders so they can be understood...they wouldn't last.

I really don't think this is a problem specific to Disney at all. I work right now with co workers that slack all day. It happens. Some folks are predispositioned to give 100%, and some just aren't, but unless those that don't give 100% do something else to warrant being terminated, then it's difficult to justify firing someone.

Ultimately while I agree that there is some dead wood out there...possibly more in recent years.....I spend my time enjoying the many CM's, friends and associates that are great, have their full allotment of Pixie Dust, and make each visit memorable. I don't let others screw up my visits.

Heres the dealio. Some people don't care. They're there for the paycheck so they will do the bear minimum to get the job done. 'Love & Shove' as it's called. And then there are other performers who want to give it their all for themselves, the kids, and for more opportunities in the company (better performance=more parades/shows). The people like that are the ones who have the good time doing what theyre doing out there.
