How Do I Pack To Fly!?

Hey everyone! I am going to fly on my next trip for the first time and have no idea how to pack or what exactly to pack in my luggage. I am planning on going Southwest. I have read all different kinds of FAQ's and other related things to see what the guidelines, restrictions, weight limits, etc., are. I think I am just getting paranoid that they won't let me take something with me on the plane or something stupid like that. I plan to take my camera with lenses and tripod and my laptop. But I want to take some extra clothes and a few necessities(shampoo, soap, deodorant..) in my carry on along with my electronics. Would a camera bag be considered a personal item? And could I put my laptop into my carry on bag with my clothes? This all has me really confused, but then again, it is not hard to confuse me:P Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!:D

You should be fine with that in a carry on - I bring a large pocketbook and a second bag with the camera, video recorder, kids DSs and the portable DVD player and have never had an issue. You may want to skip the shampoo though since there are restrictions on liquids (or get a small bottle).
I think Southwest has dimensions for the carry on bag on their website.

You know about getting a seating group? You don't want a C group, or you'll be sitting in the back with a smelly person who nobody wanted to sit with.

You just have to take your laptop out to run through the scanner.

Put small liquid bottles in separate zip lock, but you can leave it in bag on top - they might ask to take it out. If you have solid white deodorant, it doesn't count as a "liquid" FYI

Try not to wear a belt and shoes with laces - it's a pain. Also, any other metal that's gonna be on you, just put into a bag that's going to go through the scanner. Saves time and aggravation going through screening.

Double check your bags before you pack that there isn't anything in there that shouldn't belong. If you see them moving the belt back and forth and they call someone else over to look, they're gonna pull you aside. :)

If you have a direct flight I would suggest you check as much as possible, and only keep the expensive items with you as carry-ons. Last time I flew direct, non-stop on SW I carried my purse with a 2 books (one Kindle, one paperback) inside.

When I fly to WDW, I pack one large suitcase that gets checked, and I have a backpack as a carry-on.

The suitcase gets my toiletry bag, and the bottles of shampoo, body wash, sunblock, contacts solution, etc, all put in a gallon-size ziploc bag or two to defend against leaks.

My backpack gets all of my travel documents, medication, netbook, small camera bag (camera, charger, spare batteries, netbook power cord, cell phone charger), reading material and a change of shirt. It also gets a small ziploc baggie with a travel-size contacts solution, contacts case and eye drops (my contacts tend to dry out on the plane or if I take a nap).

My netbook is in a sleeve that meets the requirements of the TSA that allows me to keep it inside the sleeve while going through the x-ray machine. (I still have to take the netbook-inside-sleeve out of the backpack and put it in its own plastic bin, though)
Here's more info about laptop bags and the TSA:
http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/simplifying_laptop_bag_procedures.shtm

As I approach the security line, my ring, cell phone and spare change goes into the top pocket of the backpack, and my netbook and liquids baggy come out and into a bin. I only take my belt off if I'll be in one of the full-body scanners, as the buckle has never been enough to set off just the metal detectors.

I agree with those above who said when in doubt check the TSA website. However, since I actually work for TSA I'll give you the run down from my point of view.

-Don't overpack and pack in an organized fashion. A cluttered bag will give them reason to check your bag.

-Keep all tolietries (liquids, gels, creams, pastes, lotions, beverages, aresols and anything of the sort) under 3.4 oz. Note its not how much is in the container, but the actual size of the container much read 3.4 oz or less.

-Tolietries must be placed in a 1 quart sized ziplock sandwich baggie. The baggie should be able to zip close and you are allowed only 1 baggie per person flying. This does not include toothbrush, razor and etc. Those can be packed anyway you wish.

-Pack your baggie of tolietries in the outside pocket of your carryon. When you get to security take that baggie out and place it in a bin.

-The only electronics we are concerned with are those the size of a 10 inch laptop or larger. If you are traveling with electronics that fit that description, take those out of your bag and place those in a separate bin each. Leave the wires, chargers and batteries in your bag.

-You do not need to take out your Ipad, camera, cellphones or any other small electronics.

-Some airports require you to hold onto your boarding pass and ID throughout the screening process, some do not. Just ask.

-There are 3 machines we use to screen passengers. There are 2 types of body scanners. One uses radiation, the other uses millimeter wave technology, similiar to sound waves. If you are asked to place your hands on the wall thats radiation, if you are asked to raise your hands above your head, thats millimeter wave which contains no radiation. Those "naked" pictures are not "naked" pictures, they resemble those pictures of a body covered in muscle from science class with just slightly more details. Those pictures are viewed far from the checkpoint in a private room where only 1 officer can view them, that officer will tell the officers at the checkpoint if there are any areas that need to be checked based on what the picture showed. The officer in that room cannot see the actual passenger and the pictures are immediately erasied as soon as the review is done. Many airports are doing away with this technology and swtiching over to the millimeter wave. The picture on millimeter wave looks like a gingerbread man with his hands in the air. It is the same avatar for everyone. If something alarms on you, it will show up as a yellow box in that area. Depending on how many boxes show up you may require a full pat down, otherwise the officer will pat down just the yellow box areas. Then finally if you see a machine that looks like a hollow door frame that just a regular metal detector.

-All forms of footwear must come off unless you are 75 and over or 12 and under. those can be placed either directly on the x-ray belt or in a bin.

-Make sure to remove everything from your pockets. Remember the body scanners are looking for everything not just metals, so every paper can cause them to alarm.

- In most cases, belts come off. For metal detectors, watches and large jewerly needs to be removed as well. NEVER TAKE YOUR RINGS OFF. Most of the time rings are too small to alarm metal detectors and they are easily lost or stolen.

- To avoid pat downs in a body scanner dont wear clothes with excess beading and the like or lots of pockets like cargo pants.

-Hats and jackets should be removed as well.

-Also remember that we are people too. We also travel and that though there are many nasty TSA officers out there there are also many nasty passengers as well. That officer that may not be so friendly or nice could have just gotten yelled at and cused out and had things thrown at them for just doing thier job and as long as that passenger wasnt doing anything illegal thier only defense was to smile and say have a nice day. Remember you only have to deal with a hand full of them but they have to deal with thousands of you.

-Remember that there is no fool proof way to avoid a bag check or pat down, just go with the flow and you should be ok.

-Lastly, remember that not all people at all airport sare the same and just because it happened a certain way at airports a,b and c doesnt mean it will be the same at airports x,y and z. Just ask an officer what do I need to do and they should help you.

Sorry for the essay I just think its easier if people understand whats going on at airports. If you have anymore question, if be willing to answer anything I can.

I never really thought about that. I already booked my flight through Southwest, I did the early bird check in too. Can you pick a seating group, or no?

Thanks for all of the info, I better print that out so I have it, lol; I really appreciate it. If you don't mind I have a few other questions:) I use the axe deodorant spray, it is in an aerosol type can; would I even be able to take that with me, or no? Checked or Carry-on? I hope so or I am gonna be one of the smelly people on the plane:P lol Also can I pack food(non-perishable) into my checked luggage or carry-on? What about bottles of water? I know I can't put those into my carry-on, but what about checked? Thanks again for your help!:D

The regular size aerosol spray would have to go in your checked luggage. The small-size you can often find in the travel section can go in your ziploc baggie in your carryon.

Food in either luggage is fine (I packed coffee in my checked bag), as long as it's not liquid in your carryon.

Bottles of water in your checked luggage is fine. For bottled water on the plane, you'd have to wait to buy it until after the security checkpoint.

Any liquids in your checked bag you should consider putting them in large ziploc bags.

The early bird check in will check in for you so you don't have to do it 24 hours before your flight. I wouldn't worry about your boarding number in that case, you should be in the A group.
Southwest has a fun "boarding school" website that explains their boarding process. http://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/airport-experience/boarding-school/

You can pack liquids and aerosols in larger quantities in checked luggage. Just be aware of how you are packing and still put them in a well sealed plastic bag. Not because of security, but incase they somehow leak. You don't want shampoo or even just water all over everything in your suitcase.

I too would recommend just checking almost everything and taking as little with you on the plane. For one, you seem very inexperienced, and the more you have with you, the more there is to hassle with as you are trying to move through security and keep pace. Two, Southwest lets you check two bags for free. Yes, you have to wait at baggage claim after your flight, but I think that beats the hassle of knowing what needs to be where and keeping track of everything while going through security.

Axe is one of the most popular things we take away, so no don't bring it in you carry on. If the can is almost empty and you get nice officer who is willing to use their discretion you might get away with it, but I wouldn't bet on it. It's a safer bet to just check it. You can take food with on the plane in your carry on as long as its not "liquid". Which includes yogurt, ice cream, soup, pudding, condiments in jars or containers and beverages. Then there is always those officers who might give you a hard time for things like pie filling, cheese cake, or frosting on a cupcake. I've had supervisors refuse to let all cheese and play do go cause they hated the consistency. Anyway back to your questions, yes you can have bottled water in checked baggage. Just be careful cause that makes your baggage weight go up. Even though southwest allows two bags free now (I heard a rumor that might change next year)if you have more than that, it's cheaper to pay for more bags than pay the overweight fee. $50 compared to $35-$40 for most airlines. However, the cost does go up with each bag you check and the prices can get pretty crazy, $90 for an extra bag over 50 lbs! Insane!

What everyone else said and also, wear socks to the airport. Nothing worse than having to walk bear foot through the metal detectors.

I am not a smoker, but I recently flew with one and they don't let you bring a lighter on the plane with you. We had to stop in the shop as soon as we landed to pick up a lighter.

Actually you can bring lighters on the plane. That rule changed a few years ago. You can bring a regular Bic. You can't bring a torch lighter or a lighter that's a replica of a weapon (no gun or grenade lighters).

You will be fine with the carry on. You could take a second bag for the camera but i am sure you're paranoia is not necessary as you will probably have no problem.

If you are taking film like I did years ago before I went digital...Be prepared! You will have to open every box, then open every package, then they will remove it from the plastic round container. I had 12 rolls which meant that it took forever and a day. As for your bathroom items...go to the store and buy travel size...or they will make you dump it/keep it. Buy the way disney gives you free soaps and such free daily. I am betting that your camera bag will be considered your carry on. However ladies gat to carry on a purse as well, Thank you Disney! As for the bag plus your lap top good luck!

I definitely agree with wearing shoes that come off and back on easily. The last two times, I've worn flip flops. Easy on, easy off for me. In my carry on, I usually have my laptop accessories, iPhone and iPod Touch chargers, extra clothes just in case something happens to my checked luggage, contact lenses and glasses.

I take all metal off my body before I even get in line and stick it in my purse. This prevents it from getting lost/stolen. I recommend keeping your electronics (laptops, etc.) on you so that it does not get lost or stolen. You are allowed one carry-on item and one (smaller) personal item. The personal item will stay with you and go under your seat and the larger carry-on will go in the overhead bin. Personal items include, purses, backpacks, laptop cases, etc. So yes, your camera case would be considered a personal item. My mom usually puts her camera bag in her carry-on bag that she stores in the overhead bins and keeps a smaller bag with the iPad and books on her so she has something to do.

We don't normally put clothes in a carry-on bag. But if you're travelling with only one checked bag, you may want to do it. If you're travelling with more than one checked bag, divide your clothes up between the two bags. Southwest is pretty good about not losing our bags, as is Magical Express. We've flown Southwest many, many times over the years (20+) and have only had a bag lost once. And it just got thrown on the flight behind us and we had it the next day. That being said, keep prescription medications, valuable jewelry, anything you do not want to lose in your carry-on bag. If you have liquid prescription medications, you can pack those in your carry-on. Just make sure they have a label on them and that you notify the TSA officer that the bag contains medicine. No I would not take toiletries with you. It's too much of a hassle, plus they will have them in your room and down at the gift shop if something happens.

On Southwest, you are allowed two free checked bags per person under 50 pounds. They made luggage scales that hook onto your luggage and take the weight when you lift it. I recommend investing in one of these. They run about $20 and are sold where luggage is sold.
