How close is the Fla. brush fire?

How close to WDW is the brush fire that has caused a "state of emergency in Florida?" I've seen that it's in Flaglar County and Lake County?

I've never wished it would rain during one of my WDW vacations, but I do now. Hope everything is going to be alright.

It's quite a ways away. Don't worry. Brush fires are a yearly occurance here, especially in late spring (end of dry season, right before rainy season). Last years were MUCH worse than this year's, and many last year were actually ON WDW property. No worries, they happen all the time.

I remember that, seeing a bunch of smoke plumes on property our first day we got our annual passes back.

But - back to the point - Flagler and Lake are far enough away that it's not a concern for anyone visiting. It's all part of being in Florida. :)

Right now the fires in Georgia are worse than what happened in Fl in 1998. To date more than 100 square miles have been burned in Georgia since the fires started on 4/16/7. Smoke from these fires have made it all the way to central Florida. I was in Palatka today (about halfway in between Jacksonville and WDW) and the smoke was quite thick there. There is little to no chance of a significant rainfall in the near future. If you combine last years shortage of rain Fl is coming in at about a 21" rain shortage so the entire state is pretty much a tinderbox and all it needs is a spark to get it going.

I can not remember a time when I am looking foward to hurricane season like I am now.

If you are heading to WDW in the next few weeks I would prepare for the smoke. If you have asthma make sure you have a inhaler at all times and eye-drops and saline solution would be a good idea for everyone.

Boy, last summer's fires were really close. I can remember seeing lots of smoke drifting across Epcot (I have a picture of a smoke SSE in my photo album. This would have been in early June.) and seeing the night sky turn orange on the way out of the park at night. Ash was falling from the sky like snow. They were diverting traffic to alternate routes leaving the park because of the firefighting efforts. It made for a memorable trip and I hope we don't have to see that again.

Good luck!

The Fires are more near my area, about 90 minutes from WDW. As stated, it is far enough away to assume there is no imideate threat, but the state is dry, and it could spread very quickly.

I'll never forget the fires of '98. Scary stuff...All my friends were evacuated, pretty scary. And yes, fireworks were all cancled...not so good.

The Lake County Fire is near Lake Norris.... very close to where the tornadoes hit. Its about 15 miles west of Deland or roughly 45 miles northeast of the kingdom. That fire is contained.

The Flagler/Volusia fire is also NOWHERE NEAR DISNEY.

The fires themselves have not affected WDW, but my SIL said that she was smelling the smoke last weekend...she lives in the Longwood area.

So no, I wouldn't be concerned about getting caught by a fire, but the smoke is still in the air, depending upon the wind direction and velocity. The Jacksonville airport was closed this morning due to smoke, but right now I can't smell any.

Just drove down here.. the smoke was really heavy around Ocala on 75 but as soon as i passed US27 on the turnpike it was clear all the way to the east coast (Melbourne). Goin Sun/Mon and expect wind to keep it north of Orlando. We had the smoke from GA bad in Tallahassee... and its over 150 miles away

I live in south Lake County, right near WDW. WDW property is actually pretty close to a point where four counties meet: Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Polk. The area where I live is referred to as Four Corners, since the four counties meet at the corners. We could smell the smoke from the Lake County fire the other day.

From Disney property, it would take you 45-60 minutes to drive to either fire: Lake fire is to the Northwest, and the Flagler County fire is East. From one of the last reports I saw, ALL Central Florida counties are under a red flag warning, basically meaning a brush fire could break out anywhere at anytime. We have had lightning last night and tonight, too.

Anyone visiting the area, please be careful with throwing lit cigarettes out of car windows. I'm not sure how the fires down here started, but when we had bad wildfires up on Long Island, that was usually the cause of it. Also, while on foot, please don't toss butts down and step on them: they don't always go out. Make sure to extinguish cigarettes or dispose of them safely (as you can at WDW smoke spots: in sand/gravel).

Are you sure that wasn't the accident that occurred at world drive and epcot center drive? I was there that night, you could see an orange glow and smoke. They were redirecting traffic out of the park. But that was not a brush fire....

Also to note - for those driving... allow extra time through GA and FL on 95... it took us an extra hour and 1/2 to get home b/c people were driving so slow in some parts due to the hazy skies and low visibility.

Here is Georgia it is HORRIBLE! I'm in Chatham County, which is north of the worst, but we're getting smoked out daily. The haze makes it hard to breathe, and it's actually clouding out the sun at times.

Most of the state is in a State of Emergency. It's supposed to rain this weekend, but so far nothing. At least it's cloudy now...

Thanks for the info, TimeTrip. I just assumed traffic was rerouted because the fire was so close. I missed the news about the accident. See, this is what happens when one assumes ...

And thanks to the Fla. locals for the info.

I'm also in Chatham County, and th smoke has been bad, though today it is ok. Rain is in the forecast, and while it is cloudy, it hasn't begun yet.

It was so bad part of this week, that we actually weren't allowed to take the students outside for recess.

I wish WDW would ban smoking due to acts of god/nature accross property. I hate standing on my balcony and smelling smoke due to those rude acts of nature!!! :fork:
