Also, I wonder if they've added balloon animal making to the Dr. Strange birthday party magic show they have in that same land yet.

That show, in a major "world class" theme park using one of their most valuable properties* is pretty ballsy.

*Not necessarily Dr. Strange explicitly but Marvel in general.

Yikes. That's pretty bad and I'm not even referring to the tricks, although they are cringy. What's the story here? The purpose. Why is Dr. Strange producing a staff or making some mystical object float from under a sheet? Is it just some weird show and tell? Seems like the tricks could be forgiven somewhat if they had a purpose for existing within the show.

People have been saying that Disney (and the parks specifically) were sinking for 30 years now. Maybe even 40. How much longer do we got? Another 40 years?
I've been on this forum for 20+ years. People were not saying WDW was sinking when I joined. I've only noticed the marked increase in negativity it in the last 10-15 years. With the greatest increase in the past 5 years.

Yeah, back then the hot topics were things like "Will they ever replace Horizons or just keep it in seasonal status?" "Who thinks they'll ever extend the monorail?"

I remember a news station stealing an image off this site that Steve had of the inside of one of the pods for yet unopened Mission Space and reporting it as a scoop and him commenting how for all they knew, he took a picture of an elaborate mock-up inside his garden shed yet were running with it as news.

The biggest dust-up was probably what replaced JII. I recall Steve reporting at the time that reviews from the cast member preview were coming in somewhere between just okay and bad and being in disbelief until I experienced it for myself. (I'm still bitter)

We had heated debates on all of this kind of stuff but everyone was basically optimistic.

... Such innocent times. :/

That’s because 20 years ago it was coming off its highest point.

You could stay in wilderness Lodge for about $150 a night…and eat custom high quality food at every single restaurant (except Tony’s and nine dragons…blech)…pay $54 for a ticket…couple bucks more for a hopper…or $399 for a premium annual pass. And free fastpass…if you wanted to. No? Hour wait on splash.

What could have happened 15 years ago? Hmmm? 🤔

Ah... didn't spend much time on rec.arts.disney.parks? 20 years ago it was all about the disappointment over Journey Into Your Imagination, how much ruder the CMs had gotten, and Disney's latest sure-to-fail money making scheme: Fastpass.

They're still out there in the dark corners of the internet if you ever want to read. It was even pretty easy to dig up this gem from 1999:

Don't kid yourself. Disney has been
skimping on theme park reinvestment
for years! It's not simply a result of
short-term losses, and expensive litigation.
It represents a systemic corporate practice
by the Disney Company that has at
its root a series of misguided acquisitions
and start-ups that have drained resources
away from money-making enterprises like
the theme parks, and diverted those resources to fiscal sinkholes like DCL
and ABC.

Tale as old as time that is.

Is it even possible to do an overlay of Mission: SPACE?

I mean, obviously they could, but I'm struggling to see how it would be done without seeming exceptionally cheap/silly. It feels like you'd basically need to start from scratch to do anything that's not a space launch mission.
Wasn't this on the table for Guardians?

There's an animated franchise with a movie coming out soon that will bring in some buzz. Might be an easy IP to jam into a Space-themed ride.

Except it doesn't erode. It never ever ever does.

We talk here of how the parks are failing and declining, but they keep raking in money, year after year.

Even now that serious concern has come up on Chapek's future, the concern is being driven by PR fiascos, not because of the way the parks are managed.
Go read Trip Advisor, where "normal visitors" post their experiences at Disney.

Disney has a huge problem on their hands and it's gone mainstream.

I have no idea -- but I could see it working to an extent with Guardians since they're in space. You could be launched into space then run into the Guardians in the ride video. It would still be a pretty obvious quick overlay, but I think it could be done.

Doctor Strange seems much harder.

Sure... But I will still wait until there is a significant drop in attendance or revenue to actually believe that.
The next quarterly earnings report when Chapek and the CFO conference call Wall Street will tell all. For now it is just feedback from unhappy travelers that is on social media. It is concerning but let's see numbers during the next public Wall Street conference call.
