Rumor Hollywood insiders say there's growing tension at Disney as CEO Bob Chapek chafes at Bob Iger's 'long goodbye'

It’s funny (but not surprising) to see people using this moment as another opportunity to glorify his rein. As if most of the major dips in quality throughout the last 2 years would have been much different under his leadership. Spoilers: they wouldn’t be.
Yeah, Pandora, Galaxy's Edge, Cars Land, the Fantasy, the Dream, the Wish, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Moana, and the Mandalorian are crap.

I disagree. Iger knew how to control his HR department, in large part because Jayne Parker was a savvy executive. Iger is the one responsible for cracking down on ESPN when John Skipper let politics take over the network. Paul Richardson is a true believing culture warrior. Chapek has managed to bungle things so badly that he has his LGBT employees thinking he's in the pocket of Ron DeSantis, and in his damage control he's made it clear to any employees to the right of Nancy Pelosi that they're not welcome at the company.

That's a smart thing to do in the midst of an unprecedented labor shortage, right? Letting half of the talent pool know they're unwanted to appease a vocal subset of the other half?
Iger cracking down on former ESPN head John Skipper on dept issues? Not exactly. When Skipper's coke supplier dude was about to rat Skipper out, Iger flew to CT on a Friday to meet with Skipper and demanded his resignation. Skipper resigned on Monday.

At shareholder meetings whenever he was challenged for any of the culture war issues, Iger deftly responded:

"We don't see being inclusive of all people as a left or right issue, it's a human issue. Next question."

Can't thread the needle better than that. A lesson Chapek didn't learn.

Drink it up, boys.

It sounds like major disagreement, but nothing that would kick Chapek out as CEO. As much as I wish that the company would see a change in leadership, I don't think it's going to happen until Epic Universe opens. Disney leadership can continue to maintain high numbers until then, but the cultural narrative around Disney has been rapidly changing. I anticipate over the next few years, their "pent-up demand" will diminish greatly and Epic will change people's perceptions about value for their money. Universal will become a true, multi-day resort destination that can compete effectively for Disney's numbers and Disney appears to have absolutely no concern for this. I think they'll be caught off-guard in their arrogance concerning their competition and only then might Chapek be in trouble.

Disney had large church organizations asking all their members to boycott back in the 90s over LGBTQ issues. It obviously didn't end up hurting them very much.

I think it's noise from both sides. We know Disney fans like to complain loudly but still go to the parks, watch movies, etc. -- this won't be any different.

Just like back in the 90s, the people who are most likely to take up any kind of boycott are people who probably weren't going anyways.
I'm inclined to agree with you; I do think that Disney benefits from an overall "warm and fuzzy" sentiment that they've built up over the last century in the psyche of the American public, which I think will be a tremendous advantage. Time will tell, though.

Don't forget that they're hammering away at those "warm and fuzzies" with all the anti-consumer moves they're making.

Utility companies can get away with it because they “think” they are the only source.

Disney “thinks” it’s the only source of people’s entertainment, that’s the problem.
Well, those "warm and fuzzies" made them the biggest entertainment company in the world. I wonder what they think will happen when those feelings are all gone...

Good point. I've recently sold off a considerable number of shares I've built up over the years due to the current topic at hand and this concern as well. Once the veneer of goodwill is whittled away, I do worry how well the company can perform. Gone are the days of "Uncle Walt" on your television showing you the latest and greatest.
