Hitchhiking Ghosts not functioning properly?

I can confirm that today the effects are all back on. On Sunday, Oct 20, the hitchhiking ghosts were not working, AND the stretching room was down (guests were just led straight thru to the ride). As of today, both are working again!

.....what? Arguably the most important piece of the show was down, and they kept the attraction running? That's... absolutely shameful.

Just wow. Show quality anyone? Or not enough capacity elsewhere to take the ride out?
Maybe it's just the FP+ queue, it takes you right onto the doombuggy? If you want to see the stretch room, you have to put up with the interactive standby queue.

I know this is a little off topic in a way, but does anyone know what the space previously housing the figures for the peppers ghost effect is now utilized for?

The scene might be on and off B mode for a bit more. Can't give out too much detail, most of you are smart enough to figure out what is being put in. Think of the old rumors.

Rode it Saturday and noticed this but it was my first time since 2000 and I wondered if I'd misremembered. Also I didn't know they'd ever changed the effect. A shame - definitely agree there are too many video screens used now.

Are we talking Hatbox ghost? That's the only rumored addition I remember, but I thought that would be elsewhere in the attraction. I'd love to see it...

The old effect was a great gag. The best two act story of WDW.

The new effect shows off an effect. It is not plussing, it is George Lucassing. Replacing a previously rock-solid scene by something so-so, simply because you have the technology.

Can anyone describe the this final gag? My first ride was in 2010, so I believe I never saw the original.

Here are some behind-the-scenes images of the original effect. If you have any knowledge of the Pepper's ghost effect, then basically this is that effect in reverse. You are looking at the solid images instead of their reflection. (Ballroom scene)

I hope these pictures and my brief description helps dealing with the original effect.

Now here is a video on how the new Hitchhiking Ghost effect operates from a 2011 Disney Parks video:

By its design, I presume the new effect still needs at least half the space that the physical ghosts needed before. The rest of it (the originally non-guest-visible area) is probably just storage with a few computers for the new effect.
