No pics, but I would probably estimate that the claims of a "whole park scarezone" are a bit inflated. To my knowledge, the scare zones are New York streets, Amity streets, the main Central Park street, and the front Hollywood street (Either Hollywood Blvd or Sunset. I can't remember.). Bear in mind that this is after just the first weekend. Those could easily change.

Won't know myself until later this month when I have a night off from scaring to see it firsthand.

...jeez, that's my first post in, like, months. I've been slackin'.

The scarezones this year are pretty sad. There aren't really a whole lot of scareactors in the streets this year.

The houses, on the other hand, are a different story. With the exception of Vampyr: Blood Bath and Jack's Funhouse in Clown-O-Vision, they're pretty amazing. The detail in Dead Silence: The Curse of Mary Shaw is awesome. There are some great effects in that house too.

I haven't been in A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dreamwalkers, but from everything I've heard its just as good as the Dead Silence house, if not better. Psychoscarepy: Home for the Holidays had a good amount of scares in it and I liked the detail they put in each "house". It really felt like you were going from house to house witnessing all these freakish killings and whatnot. The Christmasy theme added a nice touch too.

There are some pretty awesome murder scenes in Friday the 13th: Camp Blood too. A couple of the Jasons got me good. lol

The Thing had a lot of good scares too and that was another house with amazing detail and great effects. The "puppets" were really cool.

Wait times were pretty bad around 8:30/9:00. I definitely suggest getting there at least 30 minutes before the gates open. You can get a lot done if you do it right. I did 6 of 8 houses and 2 shows Friday night. Saturday was a little more crowded and we didn't have that great of a gameplan so we ended up only doing 3 houses, 3 rides, and 1 show.

Jack's Funhouse isn't worth waiting more than 20 minutes for...the Vampyr house either. I hear they're working on adding more scareactors to the Vampyr house though, so I might be giving that one another chance.

For anyone who wants a laugh, or a scare, check this promo website Universal set up. You can make Jack say anything you want (but not too obscene; apparently, even Jack has a level of decency):

http://host-d.oddcast.com/php/start_carnemail/door=193&cl=81&AID=0

I like to make Jack say a verse from "Weird Al" Yankovic's song "Pancreas."

My pancreas attracts every other pancreas in the universe
With a force proportional to the product of their masses
And inversely proportional to the distance between them
Woo woo woo woo

I thought the entire event was underwhelming. The atmosphere around the park absolutely sucked. There wasn't anything to distinguish it from a basic night at the park except for the Central Park area. As for the houses, I didn't get a single scare the whole night. They are extremely detailed, but I think most people go to houses for scares not to glance at the pretty sets as the move through in the conga line. I went opening night so maybe the scareactors just weren't ready yet, but I'll be back to see for myself soon enough. I've got a Frequent Fear Pass so I've got to get my money's worth.

My thoughts from 10/19...

1. The Thing: Assimilation - Holy crap, what a freakin' awesome house. This was possibly the best themed house of all time... loved the animatronics and everything. Good scares too.
2. Jack's Funhouse in Clown-O-Vision - The tent houses were definitely the best this year after disappointing last year with Psycho Path and PUTS. This was really cool and the 3D was great. The scares were the best of the night in here.
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dreamwalkers - I loved how they came up with the whole 'Sleepwell' medication story, that was really cool. The theming was great and there were also a lot of great scares.
4. Psychoscareapy: Home for the Holidays - They should do Christmas-themed houses more often - this was really cool. Again, loved the theming and more good scares were had here.
5. Dead Silence: The Curse of Mary Shaw - How did they do that bridge effect? More great theming and scares in here too.
6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Flesh Wounds - A good house with some good scares. Gotta love them chainsaws.
7. Friday the 13th: Camp Blood - It was decent, but disappointing after reading that it was one of the best.
8. Vampyr: Blood Bath - I felt sorry for the folks waiting in the 100 min. line for this. It wasn't like Terror Mines or Horror in Wax bad, but it was way too short and there weren't many scares at all. I liked the idea, but it just wasn't executed well.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure
- B-
So yeah, I was extremely disappointed with this. There's so much more that could've been done and they really missed out on it. With that said, there was still some good stuff, but I think this may be the worst B&T show I've seen. I will say that it was freakin' awesome to see the DeLorean in action though.

Freak Show
- B+
The magician Brian Brushwood was the act for the night and he was great. The last thing he did with the video and cell phone pictures was crazy, I couldn't believe it.

Jack's Carnival of Carnage
- B+
Very cool show. All of the kills were great and Jack is the man.

Express was awesome as always... bypassed 120 min. waits which was great. We had all 8 houses, the 6:30 Jack's Carnival of Carnage, the 7:30 B&T, the 9:00 Freak Show, and three rides (Neutron, Jaws & E.T.) done by 11:30. I usually go on Thursdays but couldn't this year, so this was my first time going on a Friday. It was PACKED... don't think I've ever seen USF with that many people inside. I think at some points every house had a 100+ min. wait. The Express lines were longer than usual too - waited nearly a 1/2 hour in the TCM line, but at least it wasn't the 2 hour wait the stand-by line had.

Overall Thoughts:
While the lack of scarezones sucked, I really enjoyed this year. It was easily the best since XIV. I think the thing that just really made the event for me was the theming... absolutely phenomenal. They did some amazing work. I went to a horror event two weeks ago called "Fright Nights" in West Palm Beach and their houses were HORRIBLE. Another thing that stood out was that unlike other years there wasn't really a house that was just flat-out terrible. This year also had some great scares which have been lacking over the past few years. I'd say this is probably my second favorite year of all time (behind XI). A

thank you for the review

Good review!!! Thank you for taking the time to review the houses. We will be flying in this Friday and doing two nights at HHN like we do every year. Can't wait, sounds great!!! You didn't like the Terror Mines??? I thought that was the best that year. What made it so scary for us was that our light on our helmet would go out and then later come back on so we really did that one almost completly in the dark. The light would come on just as a monster would be standing right infront of us. Scared the crap out of us. Anyway Great review!!

Everyone is talking about a brdige effect! What Happens!?

You walked across a little rickety wooden bridge and looking over to the right hand side, you could see down for like a hundred feet or something! I can't even really remember what was down there coz there was a creaky sound effect like the bridge was gonna collapse so I sped across it!

I think The Thing was the house that made me jump out of my skin most, and a lot of the scares were from military guys that were supposed to be looking out for you, not even 'baddies'!

The theming was really good in all of the houses, but I think my faves were Dreamwalkers (I liked the bit where you had to find your way through a bunch of mattresses while you could hear Freddy shredding them apart), Psychoscarepy (The Christmas theming was used to good effect here, although it wasn't one that made you jump too much, visuals were really fun), I liked Camp Blood although it wasn't as scary as some of the others, (I had the problem of coming across 2 Jason's at once, which sorta ruined the illusion a little) my least favourite was probably Bloodbath (some of the Vampires were pretty freaky looking, but again, not too many scares).

This was my first experience of HHN, we went 2 nights with the Frequent Fear pass, and ended up buying an Express pass on the first night ready to use on the second after we saw what the queues were like after the first hour and a half.
The first night we got 2 shows done and 2 houses. (admittedly I got tired from a long day and refused to go in any more houses coz I couldn't handle being jumped on anymore the first night, so we did leave at about 10.15pm!)
The second we did the other 6 houses and 1 show, my other half went back to Flesh Wounds, as we hadn't needed our Express pass at the start of the night, but once was enough for me! Again, I think we left before 12pm close, I think I remember getting an 11.15pm shuttle this time. We could have done a couple more of the houses again really, there were about 3 houses we didn't use Express for, and on Bloodbath we didn't get our tickets scanned for some reason.

All in all, the first night, I made the experience a bit rubbish by being cranky, but I really enjoyed the second night, and will have to muster up my courage to return on our next trip, hopefully October 2009!

5. Dead Silence: The Curse of Mary Shaw - How did they do that bridge effect? More great theming and scares in here too.

They are mirrors. What you're seeing is placed on the ceiling to give off the effect that you're high up off the ground. If you happen to walk through again, if you look closely you can see where the mirrors are laid out.

I've been 4 times so far...tonight will be my 5th, and it has definitely improved from opening weekend. The scareactors have gotten the hang of it.

I was there Sunday night and that was by far my favorite visit this year. I got most of the scares in the houses. Even Vampyr got me a few times which pretty much s ucked opening weekend.

I'll be there as well tonight (3rd visit so far) and am hoping the crowd levels are low. I was going to go this past Sunday but I left the house a little late and by the time I got to Uni there was a huge backup to get into the parking garage. I wasn't going to fight crowds and the rain.

Crowds weren't AS bad Sunday night as they have been on other nights I was there. I think the longest we waited was an hour and a half for Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Other than that, most of the waits were 45 minutes and under. We managed to do all of the houses minus Jack's Funhouse, plus Bill and Ted. So it was decent.

I have to say that this year's Halloween Horror Nights was really the best except for their so called "scarezones" There wasnt enough scareactors around the park. The houses and shows were excellent with the exception of Rock Horror.

Are you in a house or one of the street scareactors?

I'm Active Backup, so I swing into any open holes they have on that night. Previous years I've worked in ScreamHouse: Ressurrection as a Caretaker (HHN 16), Terror Mines as a Dweller (HHN 15), Castle Vampyr as a vampire, Fright Yard as a gang member, and Midway of the Bizarre as a barker (HHN 14), and my first year I work in Lost Continent and Port of Entry as an Orc (HHN 13).

So far this year, my real job has been more demanding and I've only worked a few nights. In Vampyr again as a vampire and also in Friday the 13th as Camp Counselor Chet (the one with the megaphone talking in the cue).

Interesting...I work at Jaws, so I'm over at Camp Blood a TON. I've probably seen you

Hey was that you at Camp Blood on Thursday the 25th? It looked like you. It was early, around 7 o'clock. All you guys do a great job there at HHN. My wife and I love it and we vow to return at least for one weekend each year from now on. Thanks for making our trips there the past few years unforgetable.
