Help a novice with the new Star Wars additions

I say just skip Star Wars land. Disney is getting lazy with new additions: only 14 acres and 2 rides to encompass all of Star Wars and opening with only one of the 2 rides. Pathetic.

But if you must. I say watch all, except of course the sequel trilogy because Disney screwed that up too.

In fact just go to Harry Potter world instead.

If the land is as detailed and amazing as it looks to be, you really won't need anything from the movies. I think for the people that haven't seen star wars, the land will stand on its own. And maybe that will inspire them to journey to a galaxy far far away.

OK, don't shoot me but I have never seen a Star Wars movie and know nothing about it except what R2D2, C3PO, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia look like. If I wanted to be able to appreciate the new Star Wars attractions at WDW, what movies would you recommend that I watch? Do I have to see all of them to know what the heck is going on in this new immersive world they are creating at WDW? TIA.
To be honest, I think you'd be able to appreciate GE even if you haven't seen any of the movies. Pandora looks cool, and I've never seen Avatar. (Though, to be fair, I have seen Pocahontas.) If you've seen the entire series, you'll certainly get more of it, but I'm sure you'll still be able to have fun even without.

As for rewatching the Star Wars saga, the proper order is the order in which you choose to watch them. Do whatever works best for you. And then come back afterward and see which of the suggestions you agree with.

Not sure if you must watch the films to enjoy the new land. I very much enjoy the Harry Potter lands at universal eventhough I never read the books and then there is Pandora, while yes I saw the film back in 2009, it was not needed to enjoy Pandora today.

Ok, go watch the movies not in release order or Episode order but
the Machete Order. This suggested viewing order preserves the 'spoilers' yet give you things with some desent context at the same time and I highly suggest this viewing order, as a SW original geek since the first movie released in 1977.
https://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/11/the-star-wars-saga-suggested-viewing-order/

A New Hope (IV)
Empire Strikes Back (V)
Clone Wars (II)
Revenge of the Sith (III)
Return of the Jedi (VI)

The URL above explains some of the reasoning why this order but will give some spoilers.

This order only deals with the first 6 movies. After that you can watch the 'new' movies from Force Awakens thru Last Jedi and everything in between in release order. There is a way to pigeon hole Rogue One into the original 6 order but its ok if you don't there.

Then for grins you can go back and watch Episode 1. The Machete order manages to drop Episode 1 out completely as mostly unneeded and since it was rather poor, it works. Watching it first give you spoilers that Release order give you.

Disney does such a great job with the theming, its going to be enjoyable even if youre not a super fan and know all the details. Besides... when you are in line waiting to get into the land, just start a conversation with the person next to you thats bound to be a SW fan. The lines going to be so long , by the time you are entering the land youll know everything you need to know. SW fans love to tell everyone all they know about the series.

If you’re looking to watch all of them as a first timer:
4,5,1,2,3, Solo, Rouge One, 6, 7, 8.

Rouge one will make little sense w/o knowing the lore. If you are revisiting the series I suggest:

Solo, Rouge One, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8

Good point about making use of the long wait times. The wait times will be so long you could watch entire Star Wars movies on your phone while waiting (connection and bandwidth permitting 😀)

He also has been the most honest - other than perhaps George Lucas - about “recent mistakes”

Trust the most important part in the entire 42 year history...

Indeed. Star Wars was mesmerizing to us in it’s time and space. I wonder if the look/feel of them now would capture today’s audiences with anywhere close to the effect? But ultimately - the OT was character driven

I’d also argue that empire and Jedi have the “right” feel more than anything that have come since.

So all of it then??

Lol...recommending someone watch The Phantom Movie, Attack of the Pixels and The Last Johnson is a misdemeanor crime in 14 countries and 17 states 😉
I did say to skip TLJ if you wanted and only watch the clips with plot significance on YouTube, did I not? Things like the casino scene and Luke drinking green milk are completely unnecessary and further detract from the less-than-average film. As for TPM and AoTC I understand that people may have distaste for them, especially those who grew up with the OT but the prequels were a huge part of my childhood and even though they have their noticeable flaws and bad moments (Jar Jar, I don’t like sand) they’re still enjoyable movies and have some really great world building, something TLJ lacks.

Sarcasm Font is on....
So, we can catch the Hogwart's Express in Hollywood Studios to get to Potter World right?

Uh...those are pretty bad movies...

But I will say this: I can watch those on tnt or whatever much more now than when they came out...Clone Wars has made me more tolerant...as has the complete mishandling of the episodes by Disney

You don’t necessarily HAVE to see them all to get any references, since Galaxy’s Edge is based on a whole new planet (Batu’u) that hasn’t been in anything yet, but it’s still good to have a general understanding of some things.
I wasn't aware that the planet in SWGE wasn't in any of the movies.
It’s cool that the OP wants to check them out though. I do wonder if it will have the same effect as watching those now old movies did as a kid, or if there’s now an impossible standard to live up to. Still a fun world to get into if you enjoy things like Harry Potter or the Marvel movies.
I loved HP. Not much interest in the Marvel movies although I do like Wonder Woman.
To understand the new area you just have to watch 2 movies. Episode 4 A New Hope and episode 7 The Force Awakens. Episode 4 will give you the cantina scene and blue milk which are both being represented in some form. Episode 7 gives you the First Order and the Resistance which are the basis for the Rise of the Resistance ride. Both movies will give you enough information for the Millenium Falcon ride.
This is EXACTLY what I wanted to know. Thank you.
If you want the full, lifelong fan experience...
LOL, nope, just enough to appreciate the new land.

I have to say that I think I appreciate HP lands at Universal and Pandora Land at AK more because I did in fact read the books and see the movies. That's why I wanted at least a passing knowledge of what SW is about before trying to visit the new land. I have plenty of time though as I have no intention of trying to brave the crowds within the first year of opening.
Thanks everyone for your advice!

In order to feel like you're not alone, do you want me to introduce you to Mrs. "Who's Yoda?" Lensman?

Do you know when you're going? Peeps here will have a more concrete idea of the best answer after some of us have been in the land and through the attractions. That plus a bit of time for super-hyper-meta optimization and someone will come up with the least number of movies you need to see, plus clips from youtube to get some of the most valuable insider references. I'm betting one, Episode 4, plus the first 10 minutes of Episode 7.

Are you concerned at all about spoilers?

Whatever you do, *don't* watch the Star Wars Christmas Special!

Wonder Woman is not Marvel..
Ha! I thought the OP was trolling us with that one. :)

Wonder Woman is not Marvel..

Well yeah (s)he states as much- which i meant escapist like sci-fi/ fantasy so similar, although yeah not as big an IP. I think it’s cool (s)he’s giving it an opportunity to appreciate the land/world better. I never really got into HP but have at least watched the movies since going to Universal many times.

For a newbie, they should be watched in Machete order. 4, 5, 2, 3, 6.
When we showed my son the movies we did it in that order (though did show him 1 - Qui Gon Jin is awesome - as well). Let me tell you, it absolutely made things make sense to him.

I'm torn on where Rogue One should go. To me it makes more sense to see it after 4 even as the connections they make are apparent. So for the remainder I might do R1, 7, 8, Solo.

I sorta watched them all this weekend and I did it in chronological order except Solo. I did leave out 1 & 2 and R1 though. They aren't my favorites at all.
