Haunted Mansion - Insight?

Today, I've been to WDW when the overflow queue for HM go down into that dock; it was like a 2 and a half hour wait (near 4th of July). That's all I've seen it used for.

Correct, the other day before closing, they had the queue wrapped down to the dock and back up to Liberty Square. I bet they put the wall there because if you walk up that ramp you will be able to enter the HM area.

There was a great deal of strife in the MK over the closing of the Mansion this week. I heard complaints everywhere I went - it's very tough for the MK to be down an E-ticket. I talked to a few CM's I knew at Guest Relations and there is a ton of complaints coming in daily, as expected.

We all know rehabs need to happen, and no one is as excited as I am for this one, but closing one of the park's major E-tickets for the entire summer season is putting a strain on the MK. It was especially bad this past Monday because EVERY E-ticket in the park was down at some time of the day (and this was before the evening thunderstorms forced things to close at the same time).

The MK is very fragile when you have an E-ticket down for an extended period. Again, using Monday as an example, Pirates was down at least 3 times (bad enough they cleared the line), Space Mountain was down for so much of the day the work lights were on (not sure if it ever went back up, but it was fun to ride the TTA in the meantime LOL), Splash had issues, and then when the thundershowes came and Jungle Cruise, etc. had to close, there wasn't very much to do in the MK (and what was there had crazy lines).

I really hope the rumor that another E-ticket is coming to the MK in the next few years is true if they are going to continue with the extended rehabs. We desperately need them, but the average tourist doesn't understand this kind of thing like we do and is making people very cranky. I heard so many, many complaints about rides being down it wasn't even funny. And I'm used to this stuff - I honestly can say I never saw such an unhappy MK as I did this week. The problem isn't with the Mansion being down, it is when other things go down unexpectedly adding to the percentage of attractions not in operation.

I know there was some reason they closed it during the peak summer months, but overall, that was such a ridiculous idea. They could of closed it in February and had it reopen by May or June ... I know they are probably trying to tie it in with the start of the Halloween festivities but they should have never closed it down for the summer. I don't care the reason why ... it was dumb.

Couldn't have it closed through Easter, so that period is out. Can't have it closed from the start of the Halloween stuff through Christmas, so thats out.

What do you have left? Summer.

If they would (I think that's the word you meant to use) close it for a whole busy summer, why wouldn't they have it closed during one super busy weekend? That just doesn't make sense.

EDIT: why wouldn't they have it closed during one super busy week? Still doesn't make sense to me when the summer months average a larger crowd than the months the poster was referring to.

Keep in mind a lot more thought goes into the rehab period than just crowds. Things like When can we get all the materials in by? When will the final blue-prints be done? When can imagineers be here? When can we rent construction equipment? When is the closest time we can do the refurb without it being rushed? What other rides are scheduled to be closed? etc, etc. So it's not JUST crowds. Unfortunately for a ride to be re-done it will have to be closed for someone's vacation. Just the fact of the matter. I tell guests "It's unfortunate it's closed, but I expect it to be better than ever when it returns so there's something to look foward to on your next visit". I am having withdrawls as well, but it is needed.

It's more than one busy weekend. It's a busy week for Easter, plus several weeks of Spring break. Pretty much March and April are busier than an average summer these days.

No matter what attraction it is that's down for rehab, guests are gonna complain about it. HM is only 1 E-Ticket attraction at MK. I think they would complain more if it were Splash Mountain or Space Mountain.

As far as timing goes it all depends on what else is down at the same time. Certainly they don't want to put 2 major attractions into rehab at the same time. They just openned the Treehouse when I was there and people complained when it was down. SSE is going to get a lot of complaints when it is down as well but it needs to be done.

I'd rather take a rehab knowing that it's going to be awesome in the future than to ride it in it's current state of disrepair.

I think that this is just another case of the fact that consumer america will never be completley happy. I mean they ride the rides and go O listen to that squeal or that animatronic figure needs to be fixed, or like in the Haunted Mansion people tend to say the speaker system is awful well if you want a better ride on your next trip than maybe this trip that ride needs to be closed. I just tend to think that this is another case of poor planning, I mean WDW has a website with a calander that clearly states what will, without a shadow of a doubt, be closed why don't people use it ?

because a majority of the people that go down to Disney are not fanatical planners. Matter fact, I would guess that very few are planners at all. Just from my own experience.

Space is gonna be the fun one. The park's thrill icon....down for months. Disneyland was able to deal with it since most of their guests are locals that could be informed easily with signage and advertising.
With so many of WDW's guests traveling some distance and not keeping up with current refurbs....City Hall is not going to be a fun place. They will need to plaster it all over the website, put flyers in with reservation confirmations, tell travel agents, etc.

Maybe the area around the old keelboats would be turned into a character meet n greet area for the 3 Hitchiking Ghosts??????......They have been out at Disneyland before....but I doubt they'll ever come out at WDW besides the MNSSHP Parade

It would have been much smarter to close over Easter than the three busiest consecutive months of the year.

Yes, Easter crowds are bad, but disapointing people over a short time versus an entire summer with the MK down an E-ticket was just a poor decision.
