Back to the Future will be re-opening in June....

of 2008.

The entire area is going to be re-themed for the new ride. The new ride has pretty much been completely re-tooled from its original concept (still the same basic theme, but new implementation of it). You're not gonna be able to recognize the building when it re-opens.

Expect to hear official confirmation of the new ride very soon.

Hmmmmm interesting. It will be interesting to hear the official confirmation as well and what the attraction will be. I'm just hoping it's something we haven't heard before because The Fast and the Furious and The Simpsons do not interest me at all and they both are either dead or aging properties that aren't as recognizable as BTTF.

I',m really actually upset by this. BTTF was such a flagship ride and the trilogy is still so loved. I think the ride is still awesome but I guess I'm Biased.
I remember the old USF studio guides and the huge advertising boards for this attraction makes me feel like a part of the old FLorida I used to visit with my family is going.

Any one know if any props will be available to buy from the ride?
What's going to hapen to the full on DeLoreans?

just heard about the news and i'm already bummed out. it's a shame to see such a classic come to a screeching halt. on a coincidential note, ellen degeneres is going to do her talk show starting on the very same day BTTF closes. could there be a slight chance that she might be involved in a sendoff?

So are you saying that the new ride is still going to be themed to Back to the Future, or are they bringing in a new property?

Phenix is saying it'll re-open as a back to the future ride but completely redone. I hope he's right as I've heard that rumor before and the signs that have been outside which say something like come back to ride us at a future time hint to that a bit.

If it is the Simpsons ride I actually expect that they'll theme the building to the nuclear reactor area and we'll start out as a tour of the reactor and then something will go wrong making us all load into Otto's bus to escape and then we'll be off. That idea doesn't really excite me however, if it's a new, completely re-tooled (and if the rumors I have heard about BTTF coming back are correct) robocoaster arm attraction then count me as very excited.

June 2008 sounds like an awfully long time for a simulator replacement even if they are changing the building and surrounding area. Also if the new attraction is in fact a Simpsons ride(which I hope it is), opening a year after the movie is released seems like a huge mistake marketing wise. I know there was a delay with the voice actor contracts but I can't see this ride opening any later than April 2008, but my best guess is Fall 2007(right in time for the DVD release of the movie). I'd actually love to ride it this summer since I'm a Simpson fanatic, but I'll take what I can get.

Really? I think a year works out about right to change the theming, vehicles, and get it all nice and pretty before it opens. I think the way phenix was hinting is that it won't be the Simpsons as previously rumored. I am intrigued, either way.

I worked in and around and over this building for way, way longer than I care to admit. Trust me, to give this ride a thorough refurbishment, they're gonna need a year to do it right. There is so much to be done, way more than just the ride itself. This isn't a Jimmy Neutron style refurb. More like Space Mountain at Disneyland, where they gutted the ride and started over.

I HATE IT when Universal does this. Instead of using other buildings or using new buildings, they get rid of a classic attraction to make room for something new. I miss Kong and now I'll miss BTTF. :( I love the fact that they're finally adding new attraction(s?), but please stop destroying the older ones!

As much as people loved BTTF it needed one of two things. Either a major rehab which would have truly been a replacement which just kept the BTTF theme. The attraction was in awful shape and in all truth was not that good anymore compared to the attractions of the day. So if they were going to keep BTTF, they needed to completely gut the building and start over with a new BTTF theme.

OR

Do what they're doing and just put a new attraction there that is more marketable. I wish they'd gone with the first but apparently they haven't. I guess the second idea had a better ROI.
