happymom's Trip Report (including our Family of the Day experience)

First of all, let me apologize for the whited out faces in some of my picutres. For privacy reasons, we usually do not post photos of our children online (and my DH does not want his picture posted either). But I hope you can still enjoy the pictures, even though we look like ghosts!

We arrived at the Wilderness Lodge in the evening and checked into our one bedroom villa.

We had a ground floor this time….I was a little disappointed because we usually have a higher floor with a water view…..I really missed sitting out on the balcony with my coffee, and I especially missed being able to see the Electric Water Pageant from our room as we usually can. But on the upside, we had a nice grassy area for my DS to play in while DD napped in the afternoons.

We ordered room service for dinner, and finally got the kids bathed and DD in bed. DS and I sat on our patio and at least listened to the Electric Water Parade! Then he was off to bed.

We always start our trip off with the MK…..I can’t imagine doing it any other way! We let DS pick the first ride, and he chose the Magic Carpets, which surprised me. His favorite is HM which he usually picks to ride first, but he was a little hesitant since he knew they had changed it since our last visit. I assured him that the changes were fun…he was worried they made it scarier! He agreed to go on it later.
We saw Captain Hook and Mr. Smee on our way to POTC and the line was short, so we decided to greet them. DD (almost three years old) started crying as soon as she laid eyes on them! This was her fourth trip to WDW, and she has always loved all of the characters. We were just here in April 2007, and she had no problems. What a difference 7 months can make! I started to worry a bit, but was hopeful she would get over her fears.
We then proceeded to get in line for POTC, and DD started SCREAMING at the top of her lungs and acting like she was possessed or something. I tried to calm her, but eventually got out of line….I was not going to force her on the ride. Now I was really worried! So DH rode with DS while DD and I looked around the gift shop.
After the ride was done, we went to greet Peter Pan and Wendy. DD refused to get out of her stroller, so I wheeled her up next to Wendy. You would have thought Wendy was a witch based on DD’s reaction to her. By now I had nearly convinced myself that DD will ruin our trip! Where in the world was the DD that ran up to all the characters and loved all of the rides only 7 months ago???
We made the decision to head to Fantasy Land to see if she could handle It’s a small world. Turns out she could. Then we went on the Carousel, which has always been her favorite. We did Peter Pan, and she cried while in line, but I decided to force her on this one because I knew she would love it. So I ignored all of the “What a terrible mother you are!” stares while she screamed and thrashed her way through the line. Luckily we had fast passes so the line went quickly. And sure enough, she loved it.
I was feeling really confident now, and foolishly thought perhaps she could handle the HM. I was dying to ride it, because this was our first trip since the refurb. She did okay while waiting in line, so I was happy….until we got into the stretching room and she let out the blood curdling scream we are getting so used to hearing today. My DH is nice enough to take her out and let me ride with DS.
By now my DD was about to have a complete meltdown, so I decided to take her back to the resort to get her fed and down for a nap. DH and DS stayed behind a little while so DH could go on HM.
After a much needed afternoon nap, we headed back to the MK. We grabbed our favorite spot in Frontier Land for Spectromagic, and DH got us dinner from Pecos Bills.
We like to eat dinner while waiting for the parade….makes the wait easier for the kids. I was feeling depressed because the trip was not going well so far with DD, but as soon as I heard the Spectromagic music all worries were forgotten.
DSC06770.jpg

I kept my fingers crossed that the parade would not freak DD out. Turns out she LOVED it. Both kids were so excited.
And then……hear comes Ursula….
DSC06779.jpg

Many of you who have seen Spectromagic probably know that periodically Ursula stops and points out a member of the audience and says something like “I’ve got a proposition for you, girly…..” I don’t remember her exact words. But anyway, I’ll give you one guess who Ursula came up to. That’s right, my DD. I held my breath and watched as DD’s eyes nearly popped out of her head and she was glued to the back of her stroller. When it was all over, I started clapping and saying “Yea! That was fun!” over and over until her lips stopped quivering. She was able to fight it off and did not cry, but it was a close call!
We enjoyed the rest of the parade, and then headed back to the resort.

We got up really early this morning because we had an 8:30 adr at CRT. We headed over to the MK, and while we were waiting in line to get in, I suggested to my DS that he go ask the cast members across the way if the family that helps Mickey open the park had been chosen yet. You see, every time we have watched the MK opening in the past, DS always asks me if the family has been picked, and since we always get there right before the opening, I always had to tell him that yes, the family has already been chosen. And every time he says back to me, “Well maybe someday Mickey will pick me to help him open the park”, and of course I always smile and say maybe, knowing that it will never really happen.
So I thought that since this is the one time we will ever be here this early (we are not morning people!) I’d tell him to ask, not really expecting anything to come of it. So my DH walks him over while I wait in line with DD. I see DS talking to a CM, and then I see my DH point over to me and our DD. The CM disappears….this is the point where my heart starts to beat really fast. Then they stand there for what seems like forever, then I see the CM come back and talk to DH, and then write something down. Now my palms are sweating and I really feel like I am going to drop onto the pavement. Then DH waves for me to come over, and I think I may have stated hyperventilating by this point. But I got control over myself and headed over to DH and DS.
They let us in the gate and had us sit on a bench by that little gift store at the entrance. I look at DH and say OMG, we are actually going to get to open the park? And he says that he thinks so, that they never really told him anything….just to come into the gates. Then a really nice man named Robert who introduced himself as a Main Street manager comes up to us and gives us a certificate that already has our name printed on it as the family of the day! And he gives each kid an autograph book.
He takes us over to the front of Town Hall where a little open air fire truck is waiting. Another manager in training named Peter joins us, and takes my camera so he can get pics of us along the way.

DSC06804.jpg

We head down Main Street in the fire truck, and stop at the castle to get a pic of us in front of it with no one else it!

DSC06809.jpg

Then we climb back onboard the fire truck and head to Toontown via Fantasy Land.

DSC06815.jpg

It was so weird seeing an empty FL! There was not a soul in site, not even any cm’s. But the tea cups were running which was kind of eerie!

DSC06821.jpg

We drove into Toontown and parked by the train station. A really nice and funny guy named Dennis greets us and takes the kids’ autograph books and our certificate and goes to get them signed. We get out and Peter takes some pictures of us in front of Mickey’s house, and then Minnie’s. It was so nice that Peter took my camera for me so I could enjoy the moment without worrying about taking pictures.
Then they tell my DS to go open Mickey’s front door. He does so, and out comes Mickey, Daisy, Pluto, Horace, Clarabelle, Chip, Dale, Jiminy Cricket, Alice, The Mad Hatter, Stitch, Mary Poppins, and Bert!

DSC06828.jpg

They play around with the kids for a minute, and we got our certificate and autograph books back, which all the characters had signed.

DSC073631.jpg

Then we take an awesome group picture which I can’t wait to blow up and hang on my kid’s walls in their bedrooms.
Surprisingly, DD does great during this entire experiecne....no tears, and no screams!

DSC06834.jpg

Then Mickey takes my DS by the hand, and leads him to the train.

We all get on the train….the characters have their designated spots. We were in the first seat of the second car with Mickey.

DSC06875.jpg

Horace and Clarabelle were at the back of our car (it was actually kind of weird….every time I turned around, they were just sitting way back there motionless!).

DSC06862.jpg

Alice and the Mad Hatter and Jiminy Cricket were in the car behind us.

DSC06851.jpg

I’m not sure if Daisy and Stitch were also in that car or one further back.

DSC06852.jpg

Chip, Dale, Pluto, Mary Poppins and Bert were in the car in front of us.

DSC06848.jpg

DSC06849.jpg

They seemed to be having the most fun! They were all going from one side of their car to the other, making it rock back and forth. And Chip, Dale and Pluto kept waving to my kids from the window.

Great pictures. I hope that you DD got better as the trip went on. I almost had to laugh because a few years ago we went with my brother in law & his DS who was 3. We went to AK first and straight to It's Tough to be a Bug. My nephew freaked out and cried all week about everything. It was bad. He is 8 now and they still wont go back. :hammer:

Bert started blowing bubbles, which floated past us.

DSC06856.jpg

We stopped for a few minutes before the Main Street Station in a holding place. Mickey was interacting with my kids the entire time….it was the most magical experience I have ever had. I’m such a sentimental sap, I have no idea how I kept from bawling the whole time!
The train started to move again, and I got kind of nervous when I saw all those people!

DSC06886.jpg

Throughout this whole experience I was really trying to live in the moment and soak it all in, but from this point onward everything is kind of a blur….we pull into the Main Street Station and I hear the music from the opening and see the dancers….I think Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah was playing as we pulled in?? I can’t even remember!
Mickey got off first, and the Mayor of Main Street introduced our family. One of the dancers had a bag of “pixie dust” for us to grab a handful of, and we counted down from 10 and then threw the pixie dust out.

DSC06891.jpg

We waved and smiled, and waved some more. Afterwards we walked down the ramp of the station, and the kids were hand in hand with Mickey.

DSC06904.jpg

We took a few more pics with Mickey and the Mayor, and then said goodbye. A photo pass photographer had been in the crowd taking pics of the ceremony, which was a nice surprise. I do not have my photo pass cd yet, but when I get it I will add those pics. Robert had been nice enough to call CRT and tell them to hold our ADR, so we headed to the castle, still in disbelief over the once in a lifetime experience we had just had.
Stay tuned….I’ll have to finish this trip report later!

My 2 year old looked at the photo of Mickey leading your little ones down the ramp and said "Dat Mickey, he gonna hold Aidan's hand. I love Mickey"

Thanks so much for sharing!

Yes, I saw that! I've entered so many pictures into that contest! It is fun to finally have one picked.
Thank you everyone for the kind words. I'm hoping to have the rest of the report posted tonight.
