Thank you for all your kind wishes. My birthday was very nice, and also productive.

I took down and stored all of my outside lights, put away ALL decorations (but I know I'll find one last ornament or bow someplace under the couch or something) then when out to dinner.
It was just going to my husband and I (we had reservations at a very nice restaurant situated in an old mansion that has been converted into an inn; nice table by the fireplace) but when he mentioned his plans to his rowing buddy, his buddy told him that he had reservations (with another couple) at the same place, same time, and maybe we should just all sit together, rather than table hop all evening.
We didn't know the other couple, but the small world phenomenom kicked in, and it turns out that the husband has relatives in the RI town where my father was born, and where my family lived for many years. We also have many, many mutual friends in town here, as we travel in slightly overlapping circles. (Their grandchildren attend the same school my children attended, they race sailboats with mutual friends, that sort of thing.)
Then, I returned home to find ANOTHER vase of flowers (from my son) and a bottle of chilled Dom Perignon from my neighbors. My husband had to go out (to watch the football game) and my neighbors were walking the dog, so I'll uncork it tonight.
So all in all, getting older isn't all that bad. It beats the alternative.
