Wow.....34 years ago today RCA and GE has two grand dedications (RCA's being the bigger) for Space Mountain (RCA) and the Carousel of Progress (GE).

Space Mountain depicts a journey through time and space (around space station 75). Guests could exit the rollercoaster or bypass the rollercoaster and see the postshow: RCA's Home of Future Living.

Though the Carousel of Progress did premier at the 1964 world's fair, and later went to Disneyland, a new building and carousel core and theater system was created for it when it moved to the MK.

The carousel of progress is the oldest disney created attraction in all of walt disney world (if you were to exclude the antique carousel used in cinderella's golden carousel).

The carousel of progress in the ONLY attraction in walt disney world created and worked on by both walt disney and quite a few of the original imagineers at WED and is the longest running stage show in the history of american theatre.

This rides needs a refurb and some good TLC...it is a very important ride that needs more recognition....its not even on the map for the 2009 planning DVD.

Interesting to note that the carousel theater rotates counter clockwise at the MK. It originally went clockwise during the world's fair and at disneyland this also means that the stages or ACT's were shown in the opposite direction as well.

When the Carousel of Progress came to WDW in 1975, the original 1960s ending was pretty much gutted, only using the basic stage layout, and what was introduced in 1975 was updated for the 1980s and 1990s scenes.

Here is the 1975-1981 version of the ending.

The more things change the more they stay the same! Check out the trash cans in the SM picture. They pretty much look the same today as they did then.

Imagine a D and E ticket opening today side by side?

Happy birthday to them both.

At this point its hard for me to imagine one or the other opening by themselves. :lookaroun

But in all seriousness, happy birthday to two of the most classic attractions at MK. And here's to hoping SM gets the love it deserves in the next couple months!

Perhaps I'll drop a little note to guest communications but I would hope/think that there would be a relaunch ceremony/mini rededication ceremony when Spc Mtn opens.

Also, I would hope they include the dedication plaque...the original one...the only one for that matter, disappeared years ago.

It reads....

ONE GIANT STEP... Dedicated to the men and women whose skills, sacrifice, courage and teamwork opened the door to the exploration of man's exciting new frontier...outer space. Because they dared to reach for the stars and the planets, man's knowledge of his universe, Earth and himself has been greatly enriched.

Presented by missile, space and range pioneers

January 15, 1975

by the way.....Lee, Martin, Corrus, Spirit, Adam,Girl in the Window?

Since the rehab will not be as hardcore as it was planned....can we assume the unique windows that look out into space scenes in the queue will be kept but refreshened and enhanced....I was suprised and enjoyed the enthusiam and excitement of adults and children looking through the convex windows on all three times I rode SM....they particularly enjoyed the spinning galaxy, mars, and the floating RCA Explorer Ship.

I would assume they would be kept as it was said in the orlando sentinel that classic elements were being kept? Possibly digitally enhanced star music and moog music?
