Trip Report Happiest Retirees in The World

Well, we finally got here, to the most magical place ever and had an amazing vacation. For those that didn’t see the pre-trip report, we are myself Gillian(G) and my sister Christine (C) both of us recently retired on our first trip here after a 15 year gap. This time we did 21 nights, 7 nights at Universals Endless Summer Resort - Surfside, followed by 14 nights at POFQ. Reading your great trip reports and threads on this forum helped us to understand the many changes at WDW and enabled us in lots of ways to have such a fab time.

After a long Virgin Atlantic flight from the UK, we were quickly transferred to our Universal hotel. This is one of the new resorts built on the old site of Wet’n Wild down International Drive, a favourite of ours. Even though it is a cheaper hotel it was lovely and with transport included to and from the Universal Parks. We certainly recommend a stay here.

This was the pool view from our room which was great as we could always see how busy it was.

Universal Studios/ Islands of Adventure. 6th - 11th Sept.
C has never been a big fan of these parks but like most good sisters met me half way, although I do think the Harry Potter experience had something to do with agreeing to visit.

C could not resist trying the cloak on 😂
We found the H.P. experience to be brilliant in both the Studios & IOA. The castle looks so real as did Hogsmead.

We really enjoyed the train journeys on the Hogwarts Express from Universal to Islands & back.
We went on Flight of Hippogriff which was surprisingly rough for us especially C and just did a walk through of Gringotts Bank but exited before ride start. The animatronics were fabulous in the bank and loved the dragon.

So worth waiting for this photo.
We had lunch at the Leaky Cauldron where we both had the shepherds pie pasty which was delicious.

It really does look like the Leaky Cauldron depicted in the film and has a great atmosphere. We would also recommend Florian Fortescue’s Parlour for ice cream which was yummy. 🤤

Other rides we went on in the parks were E.T an old favourite, Men in Black, Skull Island Reign of Terror, Jurassic Park, Minions and the Horror Makeup show where I met this fab guy - Beetlejuice. We also came across Marilyn Monroe.

After such a great day, we decided to just take a walk back down Main Street and then to get our bus to FQ.

23rd September

Another Typhoon Lagoon day, so no photos until we got back to FQ, and I’m sure that those of you who have stayed here will recognise these guys.

We love this resort so much and will probably come back here after we’ve had our stay at the WL.

24th September

Started with the pool today. It was so quiet too so at least we could nab sun beds that we wanted instead of those that are left. We then went to Epcot at around 4pm for some fun but especially to see SSE and the Disney 100 display.
SSE was down when we first arrived, so had our Iced coffee instead. Next to the Land and Living with the Land. We had forgotten most of this ride, so it was like experiencing it for the first time. Then we saw Awesome Planet. It’s only a 10min film but still spectacular. Soarin‘ had a very long wait time, so didn’t go on. It was the turn of the seas next and we went on Nemo and friends. We loved it and especially the display tanks afterwards.
It was time to eat so we went to Connections Eatery and had burger, fries and coleslaw. Again, sorry no photos as we were too busy munching. By the time we got back to SSE it was working again, so on we went and by the time we came off the light display was about to start.

The display was wonderful. We have memories of coming to WDW in 1980 and seeing Epcot & SSE in the process of being built and look at it now. We hung around a while longer then went back to FQ.
25th September

Cannot believe that we’ve been on vacation for almost three weeks and that it’s our last park day. Like many visitors, MK has to be the one to go to. When we arrived it was packed at the tapstiles, so much so that eventually they stopped doing the finger scan. It was much faster getting through after that. Even though it seemed really busy, the wait times were pretty good. We started with Mickey’s Philharmagic, then Hall of Presidents and onto Haunted Mansion.

Failed miserably with the camera 🤣
We had a bite to eat at Harbour House then to the Bear Jamboree again. Pirates was next, by which time an Ice cream was needed. We love our Ice creams and it just had to be the All American Sundae from the Parlour.

C just had to get this selfie with the most gorgeous castle.

Then off to Tomorrowland for Carousel of Progress followed by Peoplemover for the last time this trip. We went back to Main Street for any last minute shopping. C took this great photo in Crystal Arts.

After taking a good long look at the castle, we finally had to turn our backs to leave, not easy to do! and made our way back to FQ. Most of our packing was already done, which left us plenty of time for having a stroll around our beautiful hotel grounds for the last time.

26th September

Departure day. Although we’re sad to be leaving, we already have plans to come back in September 2025, only this time to the W.L. which we’ll be able to book next May when the Disney offers for the UK come out.
Thank you so much to everyone who read this TR. All I can say is thank goodness C wrote a very detailed diary as I couldn’t have remembered all of it. I’ll make sure she does one for the next trip!

This was one of the best TRs I've read (and I've read quite a few over the past number of years). First, you two brightened up everyone's day with your smiles!:happy:

I enjoyed all the photos, and your impressions of all the attractions, the food, the hotels, etc.

Thank you both for a delightful TR, and I hope you can return to WDW at some point in the future as well. :)

I can't believe it's already over though. It's been so fun reading about your sister time together and the photos are amazing! I sure hope you do another for your next trip!
Thank you so much, it’s great to hear. It’s such a shame we have to wait nearly two years until we go again.
