Gunshots fired in Universal CityWalk's parking garage

Gunshots were fired overnight Monday, January 2, in Universal CityWalk's parking garage. Orlando police had been called to the area around 2:40 am to check out an argument in progress between several males. As they were on their way, they heard two gunshots come from the same area.

Police found three people hiding in a car and then held them by gunpoint until backup arrived. A fourth man had fled the scene; officers caught up to him near Major Boulevard. Trevor Shillingford, 24, was found with a .45 handgun in his pocket, along with a small bag of marijuana.

According to the suspects, Shillingford and his cousin started arguing in the parking garage, which led Shillingford to fire one shot into the air and another at the ground. According to cfnews13.com, police charged Shillingford with discharging a firearm in public, possession of marijuana and other weapon violations.

As much as we all malign Disney for closing Pleasure Island, it's stuff like this that makes me glad they did. Punks with guns are far less apt to hang out at a Lego Store than a dance club that sells booze.

Oh please, it was in a parking lot, not in a Citywalk club. This sort of crap can happen anywhere.

I have a friend who used to work DTD security and once found a bullet-riddled body in the parking lot, so... yeah. Not like that stuff could only occur within the boundaries of Pleasure Island.

Oh NO!! A SMALL BAG OF MARIJUANA!

They were probably angry because Jaws closed.

Yeah, I heard that a series of shots were fired using a 40mm grenade launcher on a number of previous evenings. :lookaroun

These idiots pop up everywhere. Central Florida is by no means crime-free. Unfortunately, when something happens in or near a theme park, it gets exponential media attention.

Of course it can, but it's far more likely to happen at a place that allows smoking and drinking.

I love Universal, but City Walk is pretty ghetto (at night anyways.) I'm surprised things like this don't happen more often there.

Quick question, how does smoking make gun crime more likely?

Hmmm, maybe that's where the term "smoking gun" comes from? Because they basically go together like a horse and carriage... :brick:

Of course there's no connection. Both Disney and Universal nighttime entertainment properties sell alcohol and permit smoking. In fact, both properties have dedicated bars and cigar retail shops. Of course, if someone is looking for a drinking/smoking hub, Orange Ave in downtown Orlando is going to have an exponential amount of drinking and smoking compared to any of the theme park areas. :hurl:

So, let's not allow this thread to get derailed by the ignorance of any A is the gateway to B allegations.

so the Epcot parking lot must be a battlefield if you use that logic

Didn't really mean it that way. I'm just saying that things lead to other things. People that smoke that pot are more likely to do other drugs. People that smoke and drink are more likely to get drunk, stoned, rowdy, in trouble, etc. Not to say that people don't get drunk in Disney, but it's much more prevelant at Universal. At least, that's what I've experienced.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias

Confirmation bias (also called confirmatory bias, myside bias or verification bias) is a tendency of people to favor information that confirms their beliefs or hypotheses. As a result, people gather evidence and remember information selectively, and interpret it in a biased way. The biases are stronger for emotionally charged issues and for deeply entrenched beliefs.

Yes? Although, next time, my name is capitalized. :p

I understand what you're saying Captainkidd, and so does Skip.

Anyone who doesn't think that there is more teenage, or shady activity going on at City Walk is suffering from a case of ''Confirmation bias'' themselves. Of course criminal activity can happen anywhere, that's the not the point.

It's not necessarily a case of Universal vs Disney, but most teenage to late 20's (the people who are normally involved with the criminal activity) don't think Disney is cool. So why would they hang out there? It's not necessarily bad people like City Walk more, or City Walk is more "dangerous". But the age group where the trouble starts prefers it over Downtown Disney (Which honestly, Downtown Disney is so bland right now I don't know why anyone would really want to spend time there.).

Example, I'm in my 20's. Do you think my friends would rather hang out at Downtown Disney, where there's not very many places to drink and party? Or would they rather hang out at City Walk where it was made and maintained to be targeted at their age. I'll help you out, I've never heard my friends say "let's go hang out at Disney World.". They prefer Universal/City Walk.
