Guest taking over a monorail?

I'm sure it would be shut down quickly, but have any CMs here ever heard of a guest attempting to take a monorail out of the station?
There are certainly enough sites out there fully explaining how to operate even the Mark VIs.
I know there's not very far you could go:lol:, but has there been someone nutty enough to attempt it and risk prosecution?

The entrance to the cockpit car is pretty well guarded by CMs, so it would be pretty hard to do. Besides, it would be kind of pointless jacking a monorail in order to take it around a loop.

Unless, like, there were a bomb on it. Like in Speed :lookaroun

I disagree :) My brother and I make a point to ride up front every time we ride - no matter how many trains we have to let go through. We have been unattended in the cockpit for up to 3 or 4 minutes with the nearest CM or Pilot being all the way back at the ramp or entrance to the station. I even stood right next to the control panel and pretty much memorized it and figured out the entire system - I had that much time.

I'm not sure what failsafes they have, if any, but it looked as if I could simply shut the doors with the big SHUT DOORS button (or whatever it was) and push the lever forward. I've paid attention, and have never seen a Pilot come back and stick any key or card in the console, so that meant it was "unlocked" the whole time they were gone.

Perhaps it was just pure coincidence every time we rode, or that these were just bad CMs, but I think I could have easily hijacked the monorail every time. But, like you said, I'd be stuck on a loop, and unless I was armed, with hostages, it would be pretty pointless to perform such feat

i mean even the cockpit was unattended, it would be dumb to steal one. First off you would not be able to go anywhere since it runs on a concrete track and secondly it just makes one big circle. Im sure there havent been attempts in the past but stealing one and being prosecuted would be just dumb. It may be fun though to crank one up to max speed and see how fast those things truly can travel!

You could probably be sued for damages, etc.

My family rode up front this last June and the Pilot does have a device (kind of like a key card) that they used before starting to do anything else. I would guess that without that card you couldn't do anything.

yeah most likely true.. someone posted earlier that they were in the actual cockpit and everything was started.. maybe one of the CMs forgot to take the keycard with him sas he was diecting people onto the monorail

If I'm not mistaken the WDW Mark VI's have governers that only allow them to hit 40-50 mph max. I could be wrong though.

I too think it would be really pointless to jack one, funny to watch the moron get hauled off when it finally stopped, but pointless none-the-less.

I'm pretty sure there is some sort of password that has to be entered for each individual driver as well. There is also a speedcontrol system which automatically turns on the brakes if the train is going too fast in some sections, like the tear drop in Epcot or the Contemporary.

Guys, I think you're forgetting something. Ok steal a bus on a track....fine....you can go as long as you have gas. If you jacked a monorail, I'm pretty confident they can turn the power off to the tracks. No electricity, you go nowhere and you gotta get out and push! So make sure if you're going to jack a monorail, carry a small nuclear power plant in your lead lined pocket! And if you're not going to use lead lining, make sure the nuclear material isn't too close to any special "areas"

If I recall correctly, I was told by a monorail CM that they can travel up to 45 mph, but they have no need to crank it up that fast.

Just the idea of taking a monorail out of the station would be stupid! Let's see...if I had the choice between:

Going to jail and being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

OR

Having a good time at Disney

Hmmmm....

I think the decision is obvious here. ;)

Yes, my fiancee and I have been left in the cockpit for a similar period of time with other guests. I think Disney should revise their policies about this and either take away the privilege of sitting in the cockpit with the driver (that would be pretty extreme) or have another CM stand near the cockpit door if the driver needs to step away.

I'm sure the controls can be overrode by anyone at a control tower or they could just simply turn the power off so I think it would be very stupid and very dangerous to yourself and others.

Well, we've almost seen everything done at a Disney park. I wouldn't doubt it if some dummy did it to get a "rush".

To get a "rush" and put the lives of those on the monorail in harm's way. Now, I don't see any of this happening. I've been going to Disney since I was 5 yrs old and have yet heard or seen anything wild like this happen. The only news I've been hearing coming out of Disney parks is when a guest complains of chest pains or passes away on a ride. Other than that, in my mind, Disney is the safest place to be. Any objections? :)

Getting a monorail going requires a special somewhat hidden button to be pressed before engaging the stick.

the button is hidden from plain view but is on . . . . ;)
