Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout announced for Disney California Adventure

I was chatting recently with a midwesterner on my team who is a recent California transplant and has never been Disneyland. She was shocked (no exaggeration) that Disneyland opened before WDW. She even tried to debate me, so I reminded her that Walt Disney was a Hollywood filmmaker, and built his first theme park in Orange County not far from his movie studio. The look on her face as the dots were connecting in her brain was priceless.

Yet another reminder that the average person pays little attention to the nitty gritty details of Disney theme park trivia.

Disney even feeds into that. I was at WDW last week and they were selling a T-shirt that said Walt Disney World - The original. I've also talked to CM's at WDW who insist WDW was first. That's like I like to wear my Disneyland shirt that says established 1955 to correct anyone. :)

I prefer DLR over WDW but there is something unique and amazing about WDW. Anyone who looks at the WDW boards on this site would read some of the stuff and think WDW is a rotting mess, but that isn't the case. Both resorts have their pro's and con's. I like DLR better, but I can see why a lot of people prefer WDW. It feels much more like a vacation destination and there is so much more to do besides the theme parks. They are still finishing up Disney Springs, but it is a huge improvement over what was there before and much better than DTD at DLR and the resorts are destinations in themselves. Transportation though is a huge problem there. It takes forever to get around even if you rent a car.

When she tried to debate with you, did you take the opportunity to use the phrase, "Do you have any idea who you're dealing with lady!? Does the name Dr Hans Reinhardt mean anything to you !?"

If she doesn't know about Disneyland, there isn't a chance that she would know who Dr. Hans Reinhardt is. I bet there are people reading this who don't know who Dr. Hans Reinhardt is.

I wasn't talking about Dr Hans Reinhardt the character, I was talking about Dr Hans Reinhardt the regular Disney genius of Disney forums for years now.

I prefer WDW and I live in California. I just wish it could be picked up and moved as far away from Florida as possible.

Ha. They're really two different animals. I love the DLR. But if I lived in the middle of the country, for a vacation, I'd prefer WDW over DLR too.

When I first ran across him at LaughingPlace, I had no idea. Who knew someone that smart would be a fan of a movie that dumb?

I much prefer the DL park but I also much prefer the WDW experience. You really are, should you choose to stay onsite, immersed in the total Disney experience. We have absolutely loved everything about our three, very different trips.

I think the fact that I have been reading non stop terrible reviews on WDW for about 4 years has cemented the fact that I will absolutely enjoy my first WDW trip. It's definitely better than something being overly hyped. It seems that the general consensus is that WDW is an amazing vacation destination but DL is more charming and complete than any of the WDW parks. This is what I have gathered from just being on these boards...

1. Magic Kingdom: Disneyland is way better
2. Epcot: It was so much better in the 80's
3. DHS: Half day park with only 5 rides
4. Animal Kingdom: Beatiful park but needs more to do at night.

I'm Curious though, for folks that say WDW is In bad shape, how do you think a first timer/ DL vet will see WDW? Someone who doesn't know how great Epcot was in the past or DHS before it was a shell of its former self. At the same time someone who can compare and contrast with DLR experience.

Personally, I think it depends on the park, Disney's Animal Kingdom is indeed beautiful and unique and unlike anything at DLR. Epcot still has traces of it's former greatness but it has been severely watered down. DHS is now basically what DCA was during the construction wall period. I personally feel right now DLR is a better value for the money but I was at WDW first so my perceptions are colored from that experience.

I don't fundamentally disagree with any of those 4, but I don't think that means that WDW is a bad experience by any means.

The Magic Kingdom is a very good park and only suffers in these discussion because nothing compares favorably to Disneyland. Saying that Disneyland is way better isn't saying that the Magic Kingdom doesn't deserve praise - both parks have much more of their own identity than many Disneyland regulars might imagine. I don't think this is as true of Hollywood Studios and DCA, the parks are tonally very similar, with similar attraction rosters and likely similar futures.

What remains of Epcot Center and some of the more tasteful updates still make that park something special. If the more philosophical aspects of Disneyland's history resonate with you, I think you will find Epcot remains an exceptional experience. Much of the negative comments towards Epcot are rooted in the fact that the park today is a shadow of what it once was, but even that shadow makes important statements.

Animal Kingdom is incredibly unique in both tone and execution. It's really characteristically different from anything else that Disney has done. People complain about Animal Kingdom's attraction roster, and although some of that is justified, I've generally found that a day at Animal Kingdom can be entirely filled without seeing and doing everything. The experiences there tend to be smaller than a traditional "theme park", and the place deserves the time you devote to it.
