Losing money? It doesn’t necessarily cost anything day to day to run ILL? All it does is make money
The demand for the virtual queue is substantially lower now. As such, guests will have no problem getting the virtual queue spot which is included with their admission. There is no incentive to purchase the ILLS.

If they eliminated the virtual queue the standby line would be a longer wait than guests are currently experiencing. This would force more people to the Individual Lightning Lane. There was instant availability for the ILLS last week which means they weren't selling all possible spots.

Don’t you have to purchase Genie plus to get any lighting lane? Virtual queue or not? So they are making what? $17 per person who rides vs an unknown number of people paying $17ish (ETA - $17ish for ILL) and the rest riding for ‘free’ on standby if they refuse to purchase Genie plus.
Maybe I misunderstood how this works?

That's not a new thing. People have been able to get a VQ if they wanted one almost since the ride opened.

I agree that going standby would make ILLs more valuable, though.

You can purchase an Individual Lightning Lane ($14-17) without purchasing Genie+ service ($15 per day).

Is it time for this attraction to move to standby lines w/ ILL? On my last trip I was boarding group 2, entered attraction about 30 minutes after group was called and trains were going out half empty. Feel like they are losing out on capacity at this point.
