Messy! Thanks for the full story. Do you know if this was UoE or Ellen? There again, I recall a few years ago them running a five pack for a very long time...

Slade; nice info. Is tracking done by puck or wire? Actually, did you ever use a guidewire? How much `dumber` are the theatre vehicles than UoE - I believe they steer themselves but you have to start and stop at the correct points manually?

I have no clue about the first question. But I do know someone who just left GMR for Backlot Tour after 17 years at GMR I could ask. Dumber is an understatement!!! I have been on UoE a heckuva lot (was my favorite attraction as a kid till ToT came around) and never experienced any backup at all. The vehicles were running smoothly until Imagineering replaced the transmissions and drives instead of replacing the whole vehicle (not to mention they could use a lot of space behind GMR for maintenance and storage cause the ride could use more than just 11 vehicles with all the problems they have!!! And yes the guide/characters have to put the vehicles in drive mode, but the metal plates slow and stop the vehicles at the desired spot. If you ride it any time soon, request the back of the vehicle and watch the track behind you. You will see rectangular spots in some of the scenes (mostly tour guide/character switch, finale, and dock) these are charge plates that help (and I use that term loosly) charge the batteries the vehicles use to run. Around these are the metal plates that slow and stop the vehicles. Most of the time, the vehicles either stop too soon or not soon enough and don't charge as much, hence the problems the vehicles have. Oh and in the Oz scene, there is a spot around the house that fell on the Witch of the East that switches a single B vehicle into an A vehicle so it will stop in the right spot in front of the Witch of the West.

As far as I know, the red/green block lights have no control over the trams. A CM could theoretcially ignore them and drive straight through all red lights (making for quite bad show, I'm sure)

You would be correct. The red/green lights let us know if the next scene is empty or if the vehicle ahead of you is still occupying the scene. And if you run the red light, it will really screw up the system that controls the scene. Not to mention throw off the timing of the vehicles and create one heckuva back-up.

This is all such great info. It's so fascinating to learn how these systems work. Thanks guys for posting this.

Yes, thanks for the layouts guys. Those things are always amazing to me. Love looking at them.
Now for a slighty off topic question.
Last year someone had posted a colored pencil drawing of layouts for all the the rides in MK. It was a birds eye view of the park with the buildings and the track layouts inside, (or outside). One of the coolest things I'd ever saw. But a few weeks later I couldnt find it to show a friend of mine. I think it was in someones album.
Does anyone know if the drawing still exist on this site? Would like to see it again. And sure others would get a kick out of it too.

This was definitely during the era of Ellen. It was the summer of either 2001 or 2002.

Hey Marni, nice map! Now a question

After the gangster dissapears through the gangster scenery, do they cross the track to get to the Indie temple scene? Looking at the map they would seem to come out the opposite side of the track if that makes sense? If so and my orientation isn't just wrong, where do they actually come out or is there an overhead bridge?

Cheers

Good question, I would imagine that they just walk across, it's not like there's that much traffic!

They might just walk across, but as discussed several times before, the cars are carefully spaced together and there night not be enough time. I would assume that they walk across a catwalk. And as the change happens about 10-15 feet up, this may be why.

Can anybody confirm what the actual way is?

Overhead bridge is right. The way the ride runs and the time we as Characters have to: unload gun, load gun, walk back to Gangster wouldn't allow us to get to and from both scenes quickly waiting for the vehicle to leave, especially with more than 2 Cowboy/Bandit cars on the track. Not to mention hard for the A Vehicle guide, they only have about 4 minutes to get ready. It isn't that wide either. If you look up in the area where the big King Cobra is you will see two horizontal slabs of stone, the second is the bridge.

If it is 4th of July, Christmas, New Years busy, then there is a lot of traffic and not much time between sets. Heck even Saturdays can get rough because of no work or school...:brick:
