Goofy's Sky School

The theming looks so fun on this. Those old "How to..." Goofy cartoons are some of the most amusing items in the Disney Vault.

I did not care for this attraction on my lone ride, but I hope the refurb comes out as charming as those walls indicate. DCA is just becoming a more fun place to look around and "be" in with all these changes.

Workers continue to paint the structure, the orange color of the original track has almost completely vanished

I'm definitely in favor of better theming for the ride...but you can only do so much to polish it up when the ride system seems to be the same jerky, painful, irritating experience as Primeval Whirl.

But even if you can't make it a better ride, I'm all in favor of improving the aesthetics.

I agree completely. The re-branding of the ride will definitely make it more interesting. If they could smooth it out, that would be a plus, but I kind of like the jerkiness at points in the path. I am glad though to see the overall re-imagineering of the park. They seem to be paying more attention to "wasted" space, and can build up and provide more value, while still maintaining an overall aesthetic.

April had the opening date set at June 3 along with the Soundsational Summer kick off but it looks like the new date will now be July 1 for Goofy's Sky School.

Today May 5
http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/05/paradise-pier-transformation-to-be-complete-july-1/
Coming in for a landing on Paradise Pier will be Goofy’s Sky School, a Wild Mouse-style roller coaster which carries Guests through a flying lesson from Goofy. Last summer, we showed you this video in which Goofy dreams of opening his own flight school – and on July 1, his dream will come true!

Goofy’s Sky School – Joining the fun along Paradise Pier beginning June 3, this coaster attraction is inspired by the classic Goofy “How-to” shorts of the 1940s and 1950s as well as the cartoon short “Goofy’s Glider.” The theme is a flying academy with your pal Goofy as the wacky instructor. Guests will enjoy all the dips, twists and thrills as Goofy tries to teach a group of novice pilots how to soar through the sky.

Al Lutz has a blurb up on the front page of Miceage tonight about progress at Goofy's Sky School.

Editor's Note 5/11: The animated billboards along the track are being installed this week at Goofy's Sky School. This remade mad mouse coaster can't compete with the mega-budgeted Little Mermaid, but it's details like these that prove DCA 2.0 is being handled by an entirely different team working with entirely different goals than those that were forced to value-engineer Mulholland Madness a decade ago. - Al Lutz

That's the first I've heard that the billboards along the track are "animated". That would be an improvement over the static billboards that were along the track when it was Mulholland Madness. This should be a cute coaster! And it will be nice to have another thrill ride open in DCA that the younger set can also enjoy.

Some of the animated billboards Al Lutz mentioned have now shown up along the track, and they do appear to have the ability to move.

That billboard labeled "How To Turn" looks like Goofy's plane probably rocks back and forth, while those two chickens behind him probably spin in his wake. Cute and clever!

Actually, goofy will turn upside down and the birds will go right side up just like in the cartoon.

Oh, that sounds fun!

I like sponono88's pictures from Minty better than the one I found. This is going to be a much improved ride cosmetically and aesthetically than Mulholland Madness was.

While I am super pumped about everything that's being done at DCA so far, this is the one thing that still doesn't do it for me. You know the old saying.. it's like putting lipstick on a pig.

It all still looks like an ugly mess of steel to me. I know it's still "temporary" but after just investing whatever amount of $$$ they did, there's no way in hell it's going anywhere anytime soon.

IMO it looked a lot better when this was the proposed re-do -- but after looking at the track layout, I don't see how they could have ever made it look so nice and open (plus having the hotel right in back of it changes it too:

Here's a shot of construction progress from Friday. The pavement and planters are starting to go in around the entrance and queue, and painting is wrapped up on most of the facility. Lots of details and signage and landscaping still needs to happen, but things are in the home stretch!

Maybe they'll make the new July 1st deadline after all? :lookaroun

And how about a shout-out to the two unsung heroes of documenting the DCA Extreme Makeover; the stationary gondolas of Mickey's Fun Wheel and the west-facing seats of Jumpin' Jellyfish! Where would we be without 'em?!?

Time for an update on the attraction everyone loves to hate. :lookaroun

Goofy's Sky School is two weeks from official opening, they've been cycling cars on it for weeks, and it looks ready to go for all intents and purposes. I imagine it's the frantic construction still going on at Paradise Garden that may be preventing Goofy's from just opening now, since that construction intrudes on the entrance/exit area and queue space for Goofy's.

IMG5259-L.jpg

They are staffing CM's out front to tell people it's closed, which is usually a sign of impending, um, openness.
IMG5507-L.jpg

Potted plants block the entrances for now.
IMG5495-L.jpg

Goofy's Sky School, as did Mulholland Madness before it, will offer Fastpass. The Standby queue has a new shaded area to wind through, a big improvement over the old cement pad and metal switchbacks that were here before.

IMG5441-M.jpg

The final section of queue ramping up to the loading area has lots of Goofy's instructor licenses and flying paraphenalia, including Goofy's helmet and scarf hanging on the wall in the loading area. Clever!
