Goodbye Poly?

About the only thing that makes sense from a numbers standpoint to a complete demo and rebuild is if they can increase the capacity of the resort and get a hefty influx of DVC cash up front. Like you said, the place books solid all year round. I doubt that would change if they made the place a mini Aluani. They could also start selling the DVC portion before demo and have a good chunk of the construction cost paid for before the first bulldozer showed up.

I agree with you 100%, but...
  • The economy right now is in the crapper.
  • Disney has a couple of big capital projects in progress or in the hopper (FLE, Animation Resort, Avatar Land, etc.)
  • The DVC thing may not be that much of a gold mine right now, BLT was planned and developed during relatively good times, and but it took a long time to sell it out.
  • If they are not having a problem filling the place and people are willing to pay, then there is no need to change anything yet.

Let's see how the DVC @ GF turns out. I think that will be a good barometer to see when changes come to the Poly.

Both sides have valid points. During our last stay there, even kids noted small pool, small elevators, and "aroma" in GCH. Grounds were outstanding. Like Yoda said, maybe keep the feel while fixing the shortcomings by doing a mini-aulani. As he said, increases capacity, helps fund building. Might even result in better mousekeeping. I will join the protest if they change the themeing, but not for one building.

I can see a renovation, but demolishing Poly and putting up a new hotel, DVC or not, seems utterly bizarre. As others have said, not much of an ROI there. And besides -- it's not like Disney is lacking for space it can develop at WDW. If they want another posh deluxe DVC resort, why not build a brand-new one and increase the room base? Existing Poly + new resort will always net more new rooms (and new revenue) than demolishing Poly and rebuilding it a little larger.

From the article, with asbestos in the GCH as well as things like the volcano pool sinking and cracking and needing constant repair, it sounds like perhaps they feel that they have done enough patching and repairing and it is time for a rebuild to avoid a constant battle.

Doesn't this come up every 4-6 months?

Disney has had plans to add units and/or convert others to DVC at the Poly for MANY years now. Of course, they also had plans at GF ... and at the RC site ... and on Buena Vista Drive near Studios ... and a few others too.

The question really is when/if they decide to do so at the Poly and what form it takes. I heard the latest plan was for a massive redo that would make it more inline with what Aulani is ... with NO (repeat NO) massive 15-story towers. But whether that happens or not is hard to say.

But the Poly isn't going anywhere and isn't about to cease to exist. It still remains to this day one of WDW's most popular resorts (even if the Royal Pacific at UNI is what it should attempt to be). Whatever happens, it will be with that in mind.

And realize just because Disney says something is going to happen doesn't make it so ... whether you are dealing with WRE ... or WS expansion ... or the Splash themed water park ... or even the early Florida-themed DVC resort that began site prep a decade ago (and was announced to the public) and is now home to Golden Oak (or what there is of it).

I say they should convert Poly to a value resort, and call it Pop That 70's Resort. I think there are more 70's remnants in here than the CR and it would be great to see the green tiles and the wood paneling on the exteriors again.

I Love the Poly. I have stayed there more than any other resort. While I don't want to change a thing, I am sure I will also love the new resort too. Seeing as the Poly is one of the original resort, Disney will do it just, I have no doubt in that. My only problem will be having to stay somewhere else while it is under construction. To me, no other resort has quite that Disney feel as the Poly does. I will be returning in July to say my goodbyes and see you soons to the grounds.

On another note, if they mirror the Aulani Resort in Hawaii....Sign Me Up! I will also be visiting there next fall.

Agreed. If something like this were to happen I think it is a long way off. There is just too much in the hopper right now.

We only stay at 2 resorts, the GF and the Poly, the GF is our favourite, staying there next year (building site and all :() The Poly would be our resort for 2014, the resort could do with some work but don't knock it down! One of the things I love about WDW is the history, take away the Poly then WDW loses another icon. :(

I agree. Some things should not ever be changed...the Poly is one of them.

Given that the Polynesian books amazingly well, at top tier prices - that alone is enough for Disney not to mess with it.

Unfortunately, you can't wait until the resort fails to consider its future. Readers are already bad mouthing it with the look and smell of a motor lodge. How bad do you want the Poly's name to get besmirched before you do something? Always fix something before it's generally realized that it needs fixing. Keep the good will.

I love the hypocrisy here. Don't touch the Poly! The Poly is in disrepair, it's falling down!

We are CR lovers. That being said, we appreciate the makeovers it has received over the years. The Poly needs help, and I hope it gets it. Disney already takes heat because they can't get their deluxe resorts to a 4 diamond rating. Do you want the Poly to fall to a 2? Or should they just retheme it to an abandoned old resort? Maybe they could theme it to the Brady Bunch, add the cursed tiki idol and call it good?

When has Disney actually done this? Look what happened to the future in Future World, or what Journey into Imagination still looks like. Or maybe the condition of the Backlot Tour. Then there's the Yeti...among many other examples.

The Poly is not going anywhere. Those rumors were debunked a long time ago.

I was one of those debunking the rumor when it came out a while ago. Mostly because I knew that there was not an asbestos problem in the longhouses and there was not a huge need for them to come down. I have known for a while that the GCH has been having problems that they have been putting expensive patches to fix and they are tired of throwing money away on just patching it. Then last year they were talking about how they were going to close the GCH and still function. Where would they put check in and how would they offer food services. They seem to have a plan but it did not seem like it was going to be a great situation. I also started hearing something big was going to happen.

I have to agree that if they are not going to add a significant amount of rooms than there is no immediate need to redo the whole resort but from what I hear there is no feasible way for them to add DVC in the current layout of the resort and it seems that they are set on doing this.
Two things are a fact. The resort is around the cycle of time that it usually gets a redesign in the rooms. Also the resort has problems with many areas, pool, GCH, longhouses with electrical and flooding problems, so it seems at some point they will have to start from scratch to really address these things. Obviously gutting the rooms in 2002 did not fix all these things and the flooding problem with some of the ground floor rooms will not go away until the buildings themselves are redone from the foundation up or some new drainage system is put in.

I honestly can see it going two different ways and whatever way it goes seems that they will start this in 2013. It will either be the same old redesign of the rooms and clean up of the resort or they are going to start over but from all that I heard I think there is 0 chance that nothing is going to happen.

I was at the Poly in July. While it was a wonderful experience, yes, I agree with many that it didn't feel quite as Deluxe as some of the other Deluxe Resorts. It's history and location help, of course.
