Good news and bad news regarding my trip

Hello again friends.

So something has come up and my 10 year old will not be able to go for May (ugh) so we're going to go together in October. However, since the airfare I booked isn't refundable, I'm going to take a solo trip to Disney from May 5th-10th.

So bad news is my kid can't go in May with me, but good news is we're going in October so that would be two trips in one year for me!

Is that weird to go solo? especially dining? Sounds crazy but I don't want to be that creepy guy that sits by himself at a dining table in one of the park restaurants. Have any of you guys gone on solo trips? What was it like?

Join me, together we can rule the galaxy.
I spent a three-day weekend at WDW alone, without my family during an extended business trip many years ago. There is some freedom being able to do what you want, when you want that makes the experience fun but dining alone was not one of them.

Today I would Facetime/Skype with them, take lots of photographs and spend time doing the things they find boring or repetitive and have a good time while there.

I've been solo a few times. Personally, I love it! Don't worry about anyone thinking you're weird. Trust me, no one cares what you're doing, they're too busy worrying about themselves, haha. I like to bring my smartphone with books loaded into it to read while eating.
The only time I felt weird was once in Tomorrowland. I got a cream cheese pretzel and found a quiet spot in the back of the land (near the bathrooms where you can see the train going by) and thought it would be a nice, out of the way spot to sit and listen to the sounds of Tomorrowland. Well, I looked up a little bit later to discover Stitch had showed up and was doing a meet & greet right in front of me. A bunch of people must have li'l old me mindlessly eating a pretzel in the background of their photos. Oh well, it's a fun story.

Sorry about the change of plans, but October is an amazing time of year to go to WDW! There's the Food & Wine Festival, MNSSHP, relatively low crowds, and usually, good weather. You will have a blast then. Plus you are over 6 months out from October so you will be able to make your ADRs 180 days out and have a good chance of getting most of what you want around the times you want it.

So Sorry to hear that you won't be able to share the May trip, but I'm glad that the two of you will still be able to go in Oct. Don't worry a bit about going alone, or being creepy while dining, it isn't unusual at all, and the servers are quite used to it. Also, as someone said, most other guests don't really notice, and there are usually some friendly people around if you want a bit of conversation, even if it's just while standing in an attraction line. Hope you still have a great time!

I agree about the Annual Pass suggestion, it really might save you some money since you have 2 trips planned.....could be well worth checking on.

Sorry about the delay on the May trip. I would have no problem going solo to WDW. But I don't know how I would explain to CiCi and Jayce that nana was at Disney World without them:oops:

October is the F&W thing at EPCOT, so you and your daughter can walk WS and sample all kinds of special items cheap. They will have the halloween thing going on at MK in October too. Everyone says that is a very cool event to attend.

I went in late October one year and it was pretty cool and windy during the day, not real great pool weather. If you are hoping for some warm pool weather plan on early October not late

Just returned today from a 5 night solo trip (i have also been to disneyworld 10 other times in the last 4 years solo). Honestly, I love it. I am on my schedule, I can see what I want, eat what I want, not have to confirm with others, or be boggled down. I would say that it was easier to be solo a few years ago but that is when attendance demographics was still older/middle class families and the groups that were there was school groups. Now, disneyworld is sort of like a cruise - there are many more large groups, families, and companions. In regards to dining - I would say it is a little akward. I felt like people were staring at me at Ohana on Tuesday but it was likely my imagination.

I say have a great time and enjoy yourself

Way late on this thread but I think your plan sounds great. You'll be able to get the whole run down of the place and be prepared when you go with your daughter. Also I have read so many great things on solo trips here that Im very excited to do my next trip solo. Im planning on having the QS dining plan so no TS for me this trip. With QS I'll just blend right in or take my food wherever I want to.

Interesting story for you. The wife's brother accidentally went to a character breakfast by himself and he was pretty embarrassed and felt like the "creepy guy". Though, he also said no one questioned him or gave him weird looks. So maybe it happens pretty often. Lol.

I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself on a solo trip, but that's just me.

Those non-refundable airline tickets are such a scam artist piece of crap too. I can understand the non-refundable part, but you should be able to sell, give away, or change the dates for a reasonable fee.

I usually have solved the "eating alone" dilemma by eating at the bar in the TS restaurants. Same food, good service and the bartenders are usually pleasant and happy to make small talk. I've also met some nice people sitting at the bar and had good conversations with them.

If I wanted to go to one of the TS restaurants and enjoy the view and atmosphere from a regular table, I'd probably take a magazine and leaf through it while I ate dinner. I've dined alone often enough that I've mostly gotten over the awkward feeling.

I have gone solo any number of times and have no problems going where I want and seeing what I want to on my own schedule. I actually have found that the waiters/ waitresses at the TS locations are more attentive to me as I am dining solo so they do check in with me to make sure I dont need anything, but other than that, I have no problems running by myself!!! Have a terrific time! Marie
