Give me the scoop on "Pin Trading."

Yeah, what everyone else said!

When I took my niece & nephew last year, I bought then both a mixed bag of 10 pins each from E-bay. Well, they started finding pins they wanted to keep, so we had to keep buying new ones to trade! At 6-7 bucks apiece, it didn't take long to add up to a pretty big chunk of change! But, they had a good time, and I bought them a regular album from the gift shop to keep all their pins nice. THey actually spend more time looking at them than at all the pictures we took.

On the other hand, if you can over look the expense, The pin trading is great fun, and really great to collect, and keep, I love the memories of the pins, like the one one of the space mountain guys gave me for my birthday, out of nowhere, just because he noticed I had a lanyard with like 4 pins on it, and they were all tinkerbell, lol, and he gave me a VERY pretty one. <3 i was soo happy.

And then the first one I ever traded for. I still have it. Its a toddler Ariel one. I love it. And the woman I traded with was in Germany at Epcot.

Memories like that to me just in hance my Disney experiences.

And though yes, they are expensive, I usually limit myself to 4 pins a visit.
2 I want to keep.
2 that I would trade.

;)and thats enough for me.

Can someone answer -- seems like a reasonable question -- Will a cast member give up a "good" pin for a "crap" pin you are giving him/her? (assuming the one you're giving is a legitamate disney pin).

When we were there it was clear there was a wide range of costs of the pins you could buy. What's to keep someone from buying a bunch of cheap ones and asking cast members to surrender more valuable ones for the cheap ones?

We started trading on our last trip. Not a single cast member told my kids no (and they were usually trading "crappy" pins). Some of what they traded for were also the lesser expensive ones, but the kids made some good trades too. One idea to "protect" your more valuable pins is to get the locking backs (they use a little allen wrench to unlock). When we either purchased or traded for a "nice" pin, we would put a locking back on it. Only the ones that we felt were okay to trade did we keep the rubber backs on. It forced the kids to ask us to unlock one before a costly trade could be made. The start up can be expensive. For Christmas this year, the kids are getting pins purchased from ebay so that they have an inexpensive arsenal of traders. They really got into the fun of it!

A cast member has to trade the pin as long as :

1. your pin is an official disney pin
2. they don't have the pin on their lanyard already (some don't listen to this rule)
3. you haven't already traded 2 pins with them that day (some don't listen to this rule either)

My kids just started trading this last trip we went on and they loved it, they found it to be great fun. One of the cast members said to them...."dont do it for the "value" of the pins, trade what you like, and JUST HAVE FUN!! Some people get really crazy with it, mostly adults....don't get like that, just have a really great time with it"

and they did! My one son loves the monorail so he is mostly looking for Monorail pins, my other son likes to just collect rides he has been on.

We dont think about value/rare or any of that stuff.

They also know that Cast members really cant say NO to them... BUT! I have reiterated over and over to them....say: "May I trade this for this with you" or "Thank you for letting me look" (if they dont see anything they want to trade for.) and "Thank you for trading with me" Always wait for them to be done with another guest, if they are speaking, wait for them to be done and say "excuse me, but may I look at your pins"

Ill tell you this, the cast members were SO apprecative of their politeness. One time when one cast member saw my kids again they called out to us and they motioned for us to come over and they said: "Hey! I found you a monorail! I held it aside hoping I would see you again!" The cast member then said to me "I never do that, but your boys were so polite, I had to reward that, I dont see it very often"

Your 8 and 5 year old may like it, but I feel 2 is too young....I really dont think they will get it.

ebay has alot of lanyards and pin lots for very low prices.

Your best bet is getting bulk pins for trading. you can get them on EBAY for $1 - $1.50 or so a piece. For example (no recommendation specifically of these sellers):

we bought bulk on ebay, and can't wait to start trading at WDW. glad I caught on to this idea before going. $1-$1.50 each is much better than $6 each. :sohappy:
