Read the room, Rian.

Do like we all did as kids, play out your own Star Wars ideas with the toys. At least then, your bad ideas don't get shared with the world and become canon, like my scenario as a 7 year old that had ewoks flying x-wings.

They should've stuck with him. Look what adisaster 9 was when they abandoned all of his ideas.

I know most people here won't agree with me on this lol
JJ Abrams was the mistake. Played it too safe at the start and gave nostalgia berry A New Hope with new characters instead of taking a chance with something new.

Of course audiences rewarded the safe nostalgic play in high numbers.

Then tries to revert to more nostalgia berries in the last one, and it was an absolute stinker.

I said at the time, they should have had Rian and JJ collaborate on Episode 9.

JJ did a great job making a movie that felt like classic Star Wars, but leaned towards rehashing what came before a bit too much. Rian was more willing to move the franchise forward.

Couldn't have been worse. We don't know what his ideas for 9 were though do we? There's actually some parts I really like in TLJ. Rian did get Mark to act his a$$ off in that movie.

That would've been interesting. I think it would've really required a strong hand from Kennedy. Given how JJ walked back so many of Johnson's ideas I could see him not being too keen on "giving in" to the direction Johnson might have wanted to go.

True. I remember years ago Johnson was listed as also writing 9, but that was very early in the process so maybe it was just speculation. I thought Colin Trevorrow's plans for 9 were interesting (from what I read) and seemed to be a more consistent continuation of the story vs the backtracking we wound up with. I guess I assume it would've been something similar but we don't know for sure.

…most will disagree cause you’re wrong

It was a disaster…because it hurt the IP. And we’ve seen this exact thing before. Damage was done…so the “some people liked it” doesn’t hold

I appreciate the bluntness of your response
I’m not saying it ruined my childhood or anything…
You gotta let these things percolate and it’s been 7 years. The general consensus is it was a huge mistake amongst fans and even media

When a movie is referred to as “controversial” by variety, deadline, Hollywood reporter, etc…that roughly translates to “Mistake…and money is lost”

Switching writers/directors was a mistake. It's like they didn't understand what is meant by "a trilogy."

Rian's "Knives Out" franchise is doing well. Accusations of PR grifting is hilarious for a director that is working on popular and well-received movies. Especially since the "maybe..." status is publicized only because people keep asking Rian about it. It's not Rian bringing it up over and over again unsolicited.

Kennedy has had no issues with abandoning directors for whatever reasons and killing their projects and making it known their project is no more. She hasn't done that for Rian... yet.
