All things in perspective. A poorly received MCU movie (AntMan3) makes over $100 million in its first weekend and has already pulled in over $200 million domestically. An equally poorly perceived DC movie makes $30 million opening weekend and may not even reach $100 million (Shazam 2). So things "not going well" for MCU are still miles ahead of DC.
I'd say it's not great either way. Shazam had a budget of 100mil and didn't have anywhere near the promotion of antman. So realistically it only would need about 300mil to break even. Where as antman will probably need around 600mil to break even because of it's budget and promotion. So as it trends now, antman does look like it will loose less. The funny thing is if Disney could keep its budgets in check, antman would be in the green already. If you split the budget difference between the first and 2nd film, the narrative is probably much different right now.

I was actually very surprised at how inexpensive (~$117) the reported budget for Shazam2 is. Especially after paying for big name actors.

Tho, Shazam1 was only $90M.

Shazam2 is at a $142M loss (tho, still just the first week).

Ant-Man3 is at $107M loss (budget of $225).

Part of the problem with the mcu is that an antman movie shouldn't need to hit 800mil plus to be considered a hit. The first one was one of my favorites of that phase on a 130ish budget. By all accounts it made over 120mil. That's great for a more fringe character. Of course the budget will go up with each sequel, but they just need to keep it in check.

Variety reporting Victoria Alonso was fired.

"At this year’s Academy Awards, Victoria Alonso was overwhelmed.

The veteran Marvel Studios executive and producer of the nominated film “Argentina, 1985” was stopped on the red carpet, posing for photographers assigned to capture top executives on Hollywood’s big night. But something shocked her.

“Look at this! Two women!” Alonso said of the female photographers hired for the gig (as in most corners of Hollywood, women are outnumbered by men on the photo line). Emotional, Alonso insisted the pair put down their cameras and pose for a photo with her in front of a giant Oscar statuette. As they all smiled, she told them, “We’ve worked so hard to get here, and we’re not going anywhere.”

Eight days later, she was fired as Marvel’s president of physical production, post-production, VFX and animation, three individuals familiar with the matter told Variety. The shakeup came as a surprise to many in show business and within the vast Marvel comic book fandom (a community prominent online and in person at the many multiplexes where the studio releases its films). Her dismissal has raised numerous questions about behind-the-scenes workings at the prized content engine, and with them, another unfavorable news cycle as Disney CEO Bob Iger attempts to stabilize its parent company amid economic unrest.

While the cause of Alonso’s termination is unclear, the sources said, the decision was made by a consortium including human resources, Disney’s legal department and multiple executives including Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman (to whom all of Marvel Studios reports). Alonso’s longtime boss and Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige felt mired in an impossible situation, one source added, and ultimately did not intervene. Alonso was blindsided, another insider added.

A representative for Alonso declined to provide comment for this story. Marvel Studios had no comment."

Did I miss it or has nobody commented on Jonathan Majors being arrested for domestic violence?
He was released and the accuser (significant other?) recanted BUT she was indeed injured. Now, two lesser known directors are coming out saying how bad of a person he is and that he is a sociopath. Not sure where this will all go. Either way, it's bad press for MCU, especially with AntManQM's performance after opening weekend.

Perhaps it will give the MCU an excuse to move away from the Kangs Dynasty considering Antmans performance

Interesting. I didn’t follow the story but saw his promo spots had been dropped by the US Army. (Didn’t know he did those but sure.) Curious to see how this plays out. He’s got another awards-contender coming out this year that debuted at Sundance. Unfortunate timing for him, not to mention the woman who was on the receiving end.

I was actually wondering if they'd pull Kang from Avengers Campus yesterday because of the news. (Based on box office, I was expecting this to be his last weekend anyway.) But they started him on the rooftop and balcony of Avengers Headquarters and there didn't seem to be a fuss (thankfully - but you never know when people conflate actor and character), then later they sent him down to meet & greet and he was awesome as usual. (I say that having not seen AM&TWQ yet - waiting for Disney+ however, meeting the character was super fun.)

"Talent manager Entertainment 360 has dropped Jonathan Majors, several sources tell us. The recent move by Majors’ longtime manager comes three weeks after the Magazine Dreams star was arrested on domestic violence charges in New York City."

----

"Majors has already shot the second season of Marvel/Disney+’s Loki, in which he reprises his uber-villain role of Kang the Conqueror, and won’t go before the cameras in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty for quite some time. Deadline hears there’s been zero conversations in the Marvel camp to drop Majors from the MCU."

Article from Deadline says Disney has reached a settlement with Victoria Alonso.

“The Walt Disney Company has settled with former Marvel Studios VFX chief Victoria Alonso after pink-slipping her last month.

While details between Alonso and Disney are confidential, there was a multi-million financial compensation, we hear. The deal between the parties was reached in the past few days. Alonso was represented by Glaser Weil Fink Howard Avchen & Shapiro LLP in the dispute, which went public on March 24.

The office of Alonso’s attorney Patricia Glaser had no comment on the settlement for their client when contacted by Deadline today. Disney itself did not return request for comment when Deadline reached out to the Mouse House.”
