Gastric Bypass

I don't share many personal things around here these days. I rarely even post as I've previously been dubbed "thread killer." ;) I do lurk an awful lot though. And it's a possibility some of the oldskool members haven't forgotten me.

I've spent the entire day at the hospital for my fiance's gastric bypass surgery today. I've bitten my nails into oblivion but everything went off without a hitch. And I'm happy the surgery part is over. She's still super groggy and in and out of sleep. I'm anxious to have her fully come to so we can share the excitement over how well everything went.

I just neep to announce to the world and the World ;) how happy I am for her. She's been through more in her life at 22 than most have by 50...and probably older. She deserves this help.

This does have a Disney tie in. I've been dying to get her to WDW since we met 2 years ago but the idea is met with much apprehension from her due to her weight and weight related problems.

Now she's got a chance to be healthier and in turn I know happier. And by next year we hope to impliment our WDW trip plans we've had written down for years.

I just needed to get all this sap out. Has anyone here had gastric bypass or has your significant other? Let me hear your take on everything. I know there's a lot of work ahead. Any words of wisdom are appreciated!

Wow. Congrats to you and your girlfriend on her new start on life. It sounds like she has a wonderful support system in you.
I know several people who have had the operation and who are now doing fantastically well. I know a few who did not do so well. It does take work and commitment and obviously you two know that and are ready for the challenges ahead.
Good luck to you both.

Let me add congratulations on the pending nuptuals!

Please keep us posted as to how she progresses with this. My DW has been kicking the idea of surgery around for a while now. She's battled her weight for years now and seems to have tried just about everything with only limited success. I can see why she's frustrated. She now wants to have a lap band, which I'm opposed to. She looks just great to me, and I have reservations about the risks involved given that we have two kids that risk loosing their mom from complications. Not that I would or could stop her if she really wants it.

Thanks!

It's a big decision to make. My fiance had been kicking the idea around for quite some time. The surgery itself while keeping me worried yesterday is relatively safe. There's less than a 1% chance of fatal complications if it's done laprascopically and a tad higher if a large incision needs to be made. So just keep in mind it's a safe procedure that has been done successfully for quite some time now.

I felt the same about my fiance...BUT the health benefits outweigh everything else in the end. There's a very good chance with the gastric bypass that her diabetes will be cured, yes cured!! And a whole host of other health issues that come along with being overweight will slowly but surely be yesterdays news.

I know we've got a lot of work to do now that the surgery is said and done. But I'm still happy this is the road she chose! :)

Hi Josh! It's so good to see you! :sohappy:

I know several women who have had gastric bypass.
1---who had it 13 years ago and even went back the next year to have her skin tucked. She only managed to get down to 165 but she never changed her lifestyle of eating out every day. She has now put on at least 50 lbs judging from her butt
2---had gastric bypass but not the skin tuck and she should quit drinking 250 dollars a week in wine and treat herself to it. She has gotten down to a size 14 from a 26 but drinks excessively. I've gone to dinner with her at buffets only to realize she eats twice as much as I do and she only rents the food----it's gone before we leave the restaurant
3---someone else who is the most recent one to have the surgery and she looks fantastic. Only she is having complications----something about her body has many vitamin deficiencies and although she is taking vitamins her body is still not absorbing them.

I really feel it is a serious personal committment to put your body through this and and has to be a permanent one. We all get complacent at times and she will always need that support to stay on track. If all goes well; hopefully she will enjoy the benefits of this and this was a really courageous step to take.

Congrats on her surgery! I have lap band which is the less-invasive weight loss surgery.

My only advice to you is SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT. She's going to go through NUMEROUS physical and MENTAL changes over the next few months. It's gonna be a bumpy ride for you both.

My advice to her: take it easy!! The surgery is a tool, but not an easy way out! Bypass is 'faster' than lapband so make sure she stays active as the weight begins to drop!

*big hug* to you both

Thank you Debbie and Fallen! :)

Luckily she's got quite the network of friends both online and in person who have been sharing experiences, advice etc. We've both done so much research and been to the support groups and classes. So it is evident that this surgery is not the end all like some seem to think. We actually know someone who has managed to return to old habits and gained a lot of the weight back.

I'll be here every step of the way to help her along. I'm changing my own eating habits and working on finishing with the weight loss I started some time ago. So I hope for this all to be just one big lifestyle change for us. Not just some sort of diet. The biggest challenge will be to destroy our food bond. Since our relationship started food has always been the center of attention on a night out or even in. But I know she's ready for it and I am too.
