Sherk 3 sometime in 2006

Also, as the list gets longer notice that PIXAR isn't listed very often...No longer there own field. So maybe PIXAR might be getting alittle big headed, they may need Disney more than they think.

Or... now that they don't have a contract with anybody they don't feel the pressure to provide a new film yearly.

Pixar doesn't need Disney...

Wow...this thread has me depressed.

Not a Classic Style '2-D" film in sight it seems. Man, this is bad.

I am not a big fan of Computer Animation...i prefer the Trad Method myself and the pure artistry it represents. Comp' films are a novelty, but will these films be watched by kids 40 years from now? I seriously doubt it...

It angers me that 2-D had been cast aside in favour of the latest "fad" in animation...kind of reminds me of the post-"Roger Rabbit" craze that hit animation studios back then. It thankfully phased out, and in the following years it gave rise to the rebirth of Classic Disney Animation.

All i can hope is that history will repeat itself, and maybe after "Shrek VIII" the studios will realize there mistake and go back to glorious 2-D.

CGI feels surprisingly limited. With it, the audience expects a certain degree of realism, whereas with Traditional that realism isn't expected. However, the studios are so focused on ease of production (and lesser cost), that they have done away with the more free-spirited and artistic (and expensive). It's a real shame.

I can't wait for another reformation of animation like what happened with the Don Bluth revolt.

I predict a 2D revival by Pixar in about 6 years. Everyone's project will look so similar, that the 2d animation will seem so ingenious.

As for 2d movies...there is always spongebob :p

WOOHOO! SpongeBob! YAY!...

:lookaroun

But in all reality, Pixar may be the one to start the revival. It would be appropriate considering they were the ones who started the whole CGI craze to start with. As far as stylistic differences, we are finally starting to see some with Madagascar and Robots, but the problem is that the backgrounds "have" to be realistic; hair and fur also "have" to be realistic. In that respect, their will never be as much variety as traditional allows.

If only Legacy Animation could have stayed afloat...

I must admit, though, that I can really tell the difference between pixar and dreamworks CGI films (on a stylistic level).

I think that both companies make good movies, however they do look different. Shark Tale and finding nemo is a good comparison.

Both films took place underwater, but Nemo seemed "wetter" to me for some reason. As for the incredibles, I respect the fact that Pixar is going for a more exagerrated and cartoony look.

They are starting to use computers to make things look less real. That's a good sign. Cartoons should suspend disbelief, not try to mimic reality.

Some interesting news about "Surf's Up"

The directors of Toy Story 2 and Tarzan combine their talents to dive into the penguin mystique. And somehow relatively green writers Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse Lover Girl got the call to pen the screenplay.

but the plot:

A behind-the-scenes look at the annual sporting event: The Penguin World Surfing Championship.

seems kind of week.

So it's gonna be an animated mock-umentary?

From IMDB:

Plot Outline: When the farmer's away, all the animals play ... and sing, and dance. Eventually, though, someone has to step in and run things, a responsibility that ends up going to Otis (James), a carefree cow.

Cast includes the voices of Kevin James (from the TV show King of Queens), Courtney , Danny Glover, and Wanda Sykes. Sounds like a CGI Home on the Range to me....

FRIDAY ESTIMATES (from BoxOfficeMojo)
1. THE INCREDIBLES - $14,900,000; $107,904,000
2. THE POLAR EXPRESS - $6,500,000; $13,806,000
3. AFTER THE SUNSET - $3,580,000
4. SEED OF CHUCKY - $3,060,000
5. BRIDGET JONES: THE EDGE OF REASON - $3,050,000

Hmmm....$6.5 million from TPE isn't good at all, and don't forget that it had a $165 million production budget. Plus, things probably won't be getting any better for it since next week is The Spongebob Squarepants Movie and then after that is Christmas with the Kranks, a Christmas film that most people are going to see instead of TPE. Looks like we've got the second CGI bomb on our hands here (the first being Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within)....

I wouldn't say that jsut yet. It's a holiday movie and the holiday season is just around the corner. Also it did open on Wednesday so it's had a few days out there already. I think it will have some legs and make back it's cost.

You have a point...Chiristmas stories tend to well for a while (Elf, anyone?))

But face it...when a movie costs $170 MILLION DOLLARS (what was the director smokin'?)...they better make some cash quickly.

Granted a lot of that money went into research of the new technology, but when the result brings forth images of people that look possessed by aliens (those creepy eyes), something's wrong.

EDIT: Just saw the trailer for Madagascar. The animals are cute; too bad it looks obnoxious. I'm not a Dreamworks animation fan. Funny, but things like this just aren't classics. Ick.

I detest Shrek with an utter stinkin' passion to put it bluntly. It's so "low brow" in its humor and total reliance on pop culture references and current events, like ever other Dreamworks animated movie.

No one will know any of the references in 5-10 years from now, so no one will care, thereby not making them "classics". Sure they'll make a big splash in the box office now, but they ain't even in the same league as Pixar yet.

You know the first rule of a Dreamworks film: spend every last penny on big name voice talent for every role, doesn't matter if they fit the role, as long as they are popular at the time.

It just drives me nuts that more people don't see this obvious ploy. :fork:

Let me say that I understand the immaturity of that post. I haven't seen the movie, so how could I tell a poor little four eyes chicken to die?

There I go again. Darn it, Grizz.

I'll just say I wasn't WOW'ed by the trailer and hold my grudges with Disney CGI replacing traditional. Not that CGI is bad, but that traditional is dead. If Chicken Little flops, it will show Disney that they need to get their story back -- and that it isn't just 3-D animation that wow's audiences.

Who knows. Maybe Chicken Little will be a surprising hit. But something's just telling me it isn't.

(I will say that I get filled with an odd anger every time I see that chicken. Little Bill was a much better balloon at Macy's anyway. :lookaroun )
