Trip Report Frozen No More: a live birthday TR *Completed*

What: A mother/daughter long weekend to celebrate a Valentine birthday
Who: Myself (Tuvalu) and Emily (@TrolleyFollower91)
Where: POP! (70s building, yeah!)
When: Feb. 13-17, 2014
Why: I have never posted a trip report but was inspired by @coachwnh and @disneysince71 to go live!

Until about six hours ago, when our plane actually departed, I wasn't sure this trip was actually gonna happen. We live in Atlanta, a place that is not equipped to handle winter storms. You may have seen photos from "Snowjam/Snowmaggedon" (as the locals called it) from a couple weeks ago, where thousands of commuters were trapped in their vehicles from 8-12 hours and schoolchildren had to spend the night in their schools since the buses were unable to transport them home. Emily's usual 15 minute ride home from the elementary school where she student teaches took her over 3 hours, including having to abandon her car and walk the remaining two miles home.

After that storm blew over (so to speak!) I remarked to Emily how fortunate we were that the storm didn't happen the day we were scheduled to fly to Orlando. She replied, "Don't worry, that won't happen again."

Until this week.

Monday the forecasters began predicting a "catastrophic" snow and ice storm (I hear all you northerners laughing!) The governor of GA declared a state of emergency through the weekend. Schools and businesses
were closed beginning Tuesday. We began to see our long-awaited trip drift away...

Our Wednesday flight was cancelled at lunchtime on Tuesday. Sleet and freezing rain began that night and everything was frozen Wednesday morning.

Wednesday was a mix of sleet and snow. I was able to rebook our flight for late Thursday afternoon, doubtful we'd get to leave. And this is what we woke up to this morning:

In line for our last attraction of this vacation: Voyage of the Little Mermaid. Have experienced Rock N Rollercoaster, Tower of Terror, Great Movie Ride and Toy Story Mania.

It is another gorgeous day, our warmest yet mid 70s.
Enjoyed your trip report. Georgia is much warmer than it was when you left!! 10 days to go for us!! Safe travels!

I've never seen the Voyage of the Little Mermaid show but just put it in my touringplan at lunch.

So sorry to see your TR end. Sounds like you've had a great birthday vacation. Safe travels.
Definitely see Voyage of the Little Mermaid! It is a very entertaining 20 minutes. Watch for the turtle in the opening number he makes us smile!

It has been a great birthday trip, especially meaningful since we did not think we were going to make it!

Check back for completed TR!

At the airport gate so I thought I would do some updating. Yesterday (2/16)

We never figured out what the crane was there for, although we did see workers going up and down in a basket. No sign of remaining icicle lights and no evidence of painting being done.

Disclaimer: Some would call me a competitive person. Especially at arcade games. Buzz Lightyear and Toy Story Mania fall into this category. Emily refuses to ride in the same Buzz car with me. I need to have control of the joystick so I can aim at the targets I know score higher. Sad to say I have never been a Galactic Hero with a perfect score :(

However I have been a Cosmic Commando:

Note: Emily was also a Cosmic Commando. But my score was still higher ;)

Tip: Intense Buzz players know to keep their thumb constantly pressing down on the red button. However, this results in "Buzz Lightyear Thumb Syndrome" an involuntary twitch of the thumb that can last for several hours, causing difficulty with writing, texting and focusing a digital camera. To avoid this, use the thumb of your non-dominate hand.

Only a 10 minute wait for Space Mountain! We walked the queue without stopping and, best of all, got to ride on the left-side track, which everyone knows is the better one :D

Then we went to battle the evil emperor Zurg.

I maxed out the score for the first time ever on my last trip! I was talking smack to everyone after that! :)

I'm back to continue with our adventures on Sunday, Feb. 16.

After clobbering Emily on Buzz, we left Tomorrowland and crossed the hub to enter here:

This is such a pretty view from the Liberty Square bridge:

We walked to Frontierland to sing along with those crazy Country Bears (yes, I do know all the words.) I wish they hadn't shortened the show during the last refurb :( Tip: Next time you visit, pay attention to Buff, Melvin and Max (the mounted wall trophies) when Swingin' Teddy Berra comes out of the ceiling. It's hilarious.

And I obeyed the rule and waited until the end to get this pic:
