I thought that was discontinued for the Johnny Appleseed Cake?
Been to Tusker House many times for breakfast. We like the variety of non-tradition American breakfast fare. The food has been quite good along with there blend of coffee and Jungle Juice that they serve. We try to make a return trip there anytime we in WDW. The only downfall IMHO is the characters. It was different when my daughter was younger and we sought out character meals, but now it is not as important to us and we prefer to dine without characters for the most part.
Another thought, if you're concerned with reviews about Tusker House (we've never eaten there either and most of the reviews I seem to come across say the food is only so-so), you could always take a quick bus ride over to The Animal Kingdom Lodge. The hotel is gorgeous and fun to explore, and there are three really great sit-down choices: Jiko, Boma, & Sanaa.

Tusker House- Amazing Food and great character interactions
Mama Melrose- Wasn't impressed
Biergarten- Did this in 2010 and It was OK BUT back then I wasn't into trying new things, I think if I was to return now I would like it.

Liberty Tree Tavern- Very good food for Dinner I did NOT like Lunch, Dinner is a buffet style
Crystal Palace- GREAT FOOD
Beaches and Cream- NEVER BEEN
O'Hana- I like O hana for Dinner Very good food and fun for little ones.

I would choose:
Liberty Tree Tavern: I have always had great food there and I like the atmosphere
O'hana: I have had breakfast and dinner there and enjoyed it
Akershus: Who dosnt want to eat with the princesses
Tusker House: have eaten there twice and enjoyed it both times
Via Napoli: Pizza was good
Beaches and Cream: The ice cream is wonderful I have not eaten the food
Liberty Tree Tavern: I have always had great food there and I like the atmosphere

beaches and cream- Its nostalgic and they have massive desserts, what more could you need!
Via Napoli- yummy pizzas.
Tusker house- There is something for everyone here.
Mama Melrose- Its underrated IMO.
Ohana- Would recommend it for breakfast or dinner.
Raglan Road- great food and it has a really welcoming atmosphere.
