Frigid Weather Hits O-Town

'course I do wonder if Disney is heating the pools to 82 like they used to for years and then lied about doing so for even more years ...

I'm a Floridian and I can tell the difference between 74 degree water and 82 degree.

Alright, this made me laugh.

Yeah, yeah, we all know that 30-40 degrees is downright balmy for the northerners. Not all of us are Northerners, and 30-40 is frigid to us.

For those of you flying into OIA this week.... Expect long delays.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Officials at Orlando International Airport are keeping an eye out for ice Thursday morning.Deicing is something that's not usually required at local airports, and OIA doesn't have the equipment used to remove ice from the planes. The threat of ice on the wings of the jets poses a serious threat to operations at OIA. Work crews aren't equipped to handle the cold weather because the airport doesn't own any deicing equipment.Pilots are forced to sit their planes in the sun until the ice melts.

We took our sweatshirts off for the first time today, as we were leaving AK at noon. It almost felt warm for a minute

Humidity or no humidity - it's still cold here.

But I guess I'm glad I'm not "back home again in Indiana" right now, because family is telling me we're getting snow dumped on us and windchills are below zero.

Just hope we can get home Saturday - we don't really have a backup plan.

This is not the same cold that you are familiar with up north. Yes, the air is arctic, and from up north, but our humidity level is higher, EVEN WITH THE DRIER ARCTIC AIR.

You must layer. Big heavy coats are fine, but the trick to southern cold is many thin layers.

I speak from experience, spending many a winter at single digits with a wind chill quite often below zero (fahrenheit) in the winter months. I would take those temps and conditions over 20's in Florida any day, because here, for some weird reason, the cold just cuts into you.

Do yourselves a favor and err on the side of caution. You can always take off more layers, but if you didn't bring enough, well, that's that as they say.

I totally agree - when it is cold in Florida it cuts right to the bones. The same cold temp up north seems mild when it gets below 50 in Florida.

Just got back from a 5-day trip, and it was COLD. The parks were more crowded than I expected, given the weather, but the one plus was that we got an excellent spot for Illuminations on Tuesday night. In fact, with 10 minutes to go before showtime there were still lots of spots available. Entire benches, even.

Snow/Sleet in the forecast?!

Now this is something I've never seen before and I have a degree in meteorology (not saying its never happened before...)

From the National Weather Service's forecast for Orlando as of 8pm today

Saturday: A chance of rain showers, snow showers, and sleet before 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 44. Wind chill values as low as 25. North northwest wind between 10 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

SNOW SHOWERS and SLEET?!

Due to our super-late arrival this Friday night me & my gang won't be out in the parks until about lunch time but I intend to do it whether rain, shine, hot, cold, whatever. We're planning on Epcot for Saturday. If you see a family o' redheads running here & there shivering like mad it's prob'ly us!

It did occur to me to go buy a whooooole bunch of those Therma Care patches then stick 'em all over myself under my clothes. Whatcha think???
Sounds fun! Hope the EPCOT trip's a blast. :D

Therma Care patches? Think they are not long-lasting, right? A fleece jacket under a sweater under a shirt works for me. Or maybe just the fleece jacket. It would be the wind, if there's any, that would make it slightly colder than the said temp. But do bring an umbrella just in case. Florida weather is scary awesome and aggravating at once. :lookaroun

I'm heading down at the end of next week. Even if cold weather remains I get a 25 degree WIN over what I'm dealing with in my little mid-Atlantic burg this week. And yup, I'm aware of the "humidity makes Orlando extra cold" phenomenon. :snore:

Call me selfish, but if it does remain on the cool side that just might help us tourists out because it could keep droves of freezing locals at home. A guy can dream, can't he? :veryconfu
Actually, I recall seeing many wearing jackets and beanies recently, but I can't tell if they were locals or out of state. So maybe the cool will help out, but still come prepared for lines. Anything can happen.

nah...they just pull out the Zamboni and everybody skates around the lagoon.
That would be awesome.

30%, according to our Weather Channel report. And yes, I would be MORE than overjoyed if there's a faint snowfall outside my class window. I would just say effit and run outside. I am just curious like that. :lookaroun:D

Does MCO even know how to deal with snow and/or sleet? Are we going to be living at the airport Saturday?

Again, I realize that if you're from some northern climate and have magical WDW vacation plans that you may want to blow this off as not serious.

But for those of us who live here, those of us whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and folks who can't afford heat or homes, it can be deadly serious.

So, this isn't really about whether some folks think they can handle the weather.

This is some history-making cold and it is hardship for those of us who have to live here.

Be sure to wear that Mickey tank top and shorts at EPCOT Saturday if it decides to sleet because you know it is much colder in say Minnesota or Manitoba.

I wouldn't count on it.

I read somewhere that MCO doesn't have de-icing equipment. Heard the same for Sarasota. Somewhere said they both just have to park in sun until thawed.

Would guess that Ft. Myers and Miami, possibly Daytona and Tampa are the same.

Not sure if any airports can have materials flown/trucked in for the weekend.

Actually, there were already delays this morning at Tampa to allow ice to melt off the wings of some planes--they have no de-icing equipment at the FL airports. If it really does snow you may want to bring food and sleeping bags.
