Fort Wilderness - Help?

We are staying at Fort Wilderness for the first time this Thursday through Sunday in a camping cabin and would like to know if anyone has any advice or "not to miss" suggestions that will help make our trip even more enjoyable. We are a party of 6 - 4 adults and 2 kids - ages 5 and 2.

Any help offered will be greatly appreciated!

Make sure you have your golf cart rented if you didn't do so already. It's a large property and the golf cart really helps you get around much better.

Take the kids to the petting zoo, walk around the stables and see the horses. Don't miss the camp fire sing a long or movie. Watch the electric light parade from the beach and stay on for the fireworks over the castle, great view form the marina. Rent a "mouse" boat and take the oldest one for spin on the lake. Look for the lawn mower tree (a tree grown around and over a push lawn mower) it's on the way to the marina, by the trading post area. Call the "bike barn" (1-407-824-2742) and reserve a golf cart, saves on the walking around, the place is deceptively large. Don't wait until you get there and decide you want one, trust me, you'll want one! Most of all, have a blast! FW is my favorite place to stay, so quiet and peaceful and the cabins....really "roughing" it. If you have never stayed there before I know you will enjoy it.

Oh, just a couple more things that I just remembered-

1. Learn the difference in appearance between a coral snake and a ringed king snake. One is harmless; the other will kill you.
Being from Florida, you probably already know.

2. No guest has been eaten by an alligator at Ft. Wilderness since the 70's so you should be OK.

Have fun.

True....being from Florida we know better than to try to pet the "pretty alligator" - and not being a fan of snakes, I don't think we will have a problem with that one either. Thanks for the heads-up though!

Not sure, but this time of year you might be able to do the haunted hayride...I'd see about that. Trails End is a good place to eat, not that expensive for Disney.
Just walking, bike riding through that place is awesome, we stayed there for a week last year, and would be staying there this year if someone hadn't gifted us with a condo for a week.

My brother always said to watch out for the armadillos. He and my DS were sleeping in a tent and he was convinced they would wake up one morning to find and armadillo in bed with them. Alas, no armadillos spotted, ever.

There is a paved exercise path between the campground and the Wilderness lodge. Walk or bike down it untill you see a dirt path on the right hand side. Go down the dirt path and watch for deer. Every afternoon my wife and I would go looking for them and every day they were there feeding. Walk around the swamp trail in the morning or afternoon and watch for bald eagles, I saw several. Have a great stay!!!

No armadillos?

Last time I was at FW the armadillos were everywhere. I was on a pay-phone at one of the comfort stations when I felt something brush my leg, when I looked down and it was the biggest armadillo I had ever seen. It just kep't on going about it's business. I enjoyed them and the peacocks as well; Are they still there? It has been more 10 years since my last visit but we are going the second week-end in Feb.. We cannot wait!!!!!
