Flying dragon

It was a one-time thing. It's not practical for regular use, as it requires a pilot.

I never did figure out why marketing had the bright idea to use a dragon, especially considering they could only do it for the press event. Belle doesn't have dragons. Snow doesn't have dragons. Mermaid doesn't have dragons. And last I checked, a Circus doesn't generally have dragons, either. It doesn't connect for me, storywise, regardless of "Fantasyland/Enchanted Forest" or not. Even old, regular Fantasyland is Cinderella, which doesn't have dragons either. Avatar, sure. This one, not so much.

I uh.. err. I got nothing. But yeah, I always found it kinda odd they used a dragon. Fantasy, I guess?

I wonder how much money they pumped into that one-use-only dragon.

Why not a dragon? I've never seen a flying dragon.

Wonder how much money they made with it.There has for to be some reason. Disney does not do anything for nothing. I'm sure there is something in this to make the bucks on.

There were reports that it cost around $1 million.

Please anyone correct me if I am wrong here, but I thought this was the proof of concept for an entertainment offering for Shanghai.

Maybe it is the year of the dragon in China? Maybe it is Disney's way of thanking China for making all the souvenirs they sell.

Hopefully the dragon will reappear when new fantasyland is good and opened in 2014 with the arrival of seven dwarfs mine train.

Disney projects with Dragons in them that my 12 year old and I can think of. Pete's Dragon. Sword and The Stone. Maleficent turned into a Dragon in Sleeping Beauty. Mushu in Mulan. Enchanted had a dragon. Genie turned into a dragon. The Black Cauldron. The Reluctant Dragon. Chernabog from Fantasia

What if the dragon "returns" and makes a nest in a cave under SDMT similar to in DLP with the castle? I've always thought of that

While a dragon under a castle makes a little sense, a flying dragon living inside a mountain mined by the Seven Dwarfs from Snow White makes very little.

I did hear that the tech was designed with another use in mind. No idea what that is.
Something for Asia would make sense, but then so would using it nightly over MK.
It was not originally designed for any US park. FLE got it due to a realisation they needed a media campaign to boost the poorly accepted FLE plans and that they had no idea how to generate any buzz for FLE. And in some respects it backfired spectacularly.

I think marketing simply opted for a dragon because the option was there. I suppose the idea and technology was simply floating around at the time, was sitting high on a pile on a desk.

I for one think a flying dragon is totally aprpriate to FL! FL isn't 'collection of elements lifted from the animation canon'. It is a world of it's own. For similar reasons, I think a Bavarian hillside town with skyway is entirely fitting, despite Snow White never having visited one. In fact, I find additions like 'Rapunzel's village' a complete thematic intrusion to the larger theme of FL, which is not derived from the canon.

Mostly though, let's remember that DLP has a dragon in the castle, and it's the coolest thing of the entire park! A flying dragon simply ooowwnnnss!!
I think it is pretty clear that the dragon exceeds TMACT (The Maximum Allowed Coolness Threshold) for Disney World at the moment.

Little sense? Tell that to Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema that just made a billion dollars telling the story of a flying dragon that lives inside a mountain mined by a different set of Dwarfs. With two more billion on the way.

Almost nothing says Fantasy better than dragons.
