Fish Extenders - gifts?!

Okay, once again (like with Castaway Cay) - I want to know all about them!

A friend just came home from her trip on the Dream talking about Fish Extenders. What are Fish Extenders? Are they the things on the door or are they the gifts you give?

Do I need one? What is up with the gift exchanges? Are they only for people you are traveling with/ know or do you gift total strangers?

Also - why in the world are they called Fish Extenders? :D

Okay, fish extenders! They are actually run by another board. There are usually cruise meet threads for every cruise Disney sails. People sign up to exchange fish extender gifts on their cruise.

They are called fish extenders because they hang off of the metal fish outside your room. On the Dream, they're not all fish by the way. :)

Fish extender groups range from 5 cabins to 150! It totally depends. You agree to give one present per cabin on the sign up sheet. Some people give one to each person in the room. It's up to the giver.

Ahhhh...... I see! And I think I know which board you are referring to - that was the only one that turned up in Google. :animwink:

I don't have time for another board! :)

Whew! I thought I had really missed something.

I think I might do something similar, but only for our group, since there are 19 of us. That's a whole group in itself! :D

You can also go to Etsy and search the handmade items for "Fish Extender". You'll turn up custom FE's. I ordered one from a seller there. Not that I'm trying to tempt you with Etsy....that place totally does me in!

We're participating in the FE exchange on our 3-night Dream cruise in September. I'm doing Ellie Badges (Grape Soda bottle cap pins) for each person. We have 49 total so far. It's a small group. I'm going to whip out drawstring backpacks with all my cool Disney fabrics for all the kids. I may or may not add the DCL logo with paint or applique. I'm also giving each cabin an 8 oz. canister of Zatarain's seasoning (to "Spice it Up!). OH! And I think each adult will receive a mini-bottle of coconut rum with a little tag tied on with the recipe for Caribbean Colas. :slurp:

I think it'd be awesome to do FE's for your group of 19!

49 is small??? LOL! Our group right now has 24 adults and 9 kids. Now that is small! (And get this...out of 12 staterooms, only 5 have kids!)

How do you make Ellie badges? That would be so cool for our cruise in October? Thanks!

Well, it's kinda long but I'll try to explain it.

First, you gotta find the grape soda bottle cap logos. I have the art work in a file that I bought off Etsy. I could email it to you if you want. I had to print it out several times to get the scale right but eventually I got it. I can't remember for sure but there's a specific photo paper you have to print on. I think it was matte finish.

I bought a 1" circle punch (sold near the scrapbooking stuff in craft stores) and used that to punch the bottle cap logos.

I used a small, flat paintbrush & Mod Podge to decoupage the grape soda logo onto the bottle caps. ((You know, brush the stuff onto the back of the logo, stick it onto the cap, then brush the stuff over the top to coat entirely.)) The caps then need to set for several hours to completely dry.

Next, I used diamond glaze (sold online) to create the coating over the top of the bottle cap logos. I had it down to a science with this stuff. It's so watery. I'd drip on a specific number of drops (forget how many exactly) then used a toothpick to trail it around just barely past the edges of the logo. Any bubbles in the glaze can be poked with a needle at this point, also. Now the bottle caps need to sit & cure for no less than 24 hours.

I used a jewelry-grade punch tool to punch the holes on the sides of the bottle cap for your safety pin to run thru. String a long safety pin thru the holes and voila! Ellie Badges! I'd love to have the patience to deconstruct the safety pin so the bottle cap is strung thru the opposite side of the safety pin from the one you pin onto your clothes with. I just didn't have that kind of time when I made them.

If you have any other questions send me a PM and I'll help ya out all I can.

At the time I was reading about groups that were well over 100 staterooms. I was happy with just 49. Imagine my excitement with our small group on the Magic cruise! LOL!

I think our upcoming Dream cruise group is doing everything on FB. The meet thread is d.e.a.d. Oh well. More time & effort for my hubby. I'm actually cooking up some crafty surprises to mail to the ship for anniversary gifts. :D

Well, these aren't the number of people in our family/friends travel groups. These are groups of people who are all sailing on the same ship that organize themselves online. These are "new" friends!

I had one with over 130 cabins once. Not people - cabins!!

It was a bit overwhelming, but it was crazy fun!!!

OMG! I would die! That's a huge group! I bet it was wild! Y'all didn't split into smaller groups? Wowza! As it is, I try to mail as much of my gifty stuff to the ship as I can but we still end up carrying a good bit. I couldn't imagine trying to get the stuff for that many gifts onboard. That's some serious logistics!

We didn't! We stayed in one giant group. At the time I thought that was normal, now everytime I've been in one over 20 people want to start splitting.

We brought some small things, and I'm telling you we filled up a suitcase with everything we got.

We went on a seven day cruise last year and my family had three cabins. We made fish extentors for each room and put small gifts in each one every morning. The grandkids loved getting up and seeing what was in the FE each morning. We had gifts left over the last full day of the cruse, so I just went around the ship finding FE and putting the remaining gifts in them. Did not want to take anything home.
