first trip with my kids

I have been reading a lot of the discussions on this site to help me plan my first trip to disney world with my girls(ages 10 & 11). We are leaving on the 28th for a 5 day/4 night stay at Pop Century. Plan on staying somewhere inexpensive on the 28th then preregistering early on the 29th and hitting the parks right off the bat. Any advice or tips would be fantastic?! I am concerned about the air conditioning system after reading some threads. Any new reports? WE CAN"T WAIT!:sohappy: :sohappy:

The best advice I can offer you is to relax and enjoy yourselves. My boys are seasoned WDW veterans and when we have gone; having a nice, stress-free trip is our top priority.

I was so excited when I first went with my kid(s) 7 years ago. Now I don't even remember what it was like without them. Everything is magical when seen through their eyes.

Have fun!!

That is what we do, too. Stay one night in an off site hotel and then move to our on site first thing in the morning. Just remember to have fun and try not to rush. Our daughter was 5 when we first took her and she did so great. Now the last day we were all crabby. Take time to swim in the pool and relax.

I looked around for stuff about the air conditioning, could you tell me about that?? Thanks.

Have a great time! We leave in 2 days for our next trip.:sohappy:

Have a great time. I have gone three times with my three year old and it gets better each time. My youngest has gone once and she slept through most of it, but still was magical when she pointed at things.

Remember to relax and enjoy it. Also take lots of breaks as it will probably be hot and everyone will get tired fast!

Enjoy a magical time!

When Pop first opened there seemed to be some problems with the air conditioners cutting off when there was no movement in the room, i.e. when you were sleeping.

This does not seem to be the case anymore. We stayed one night in February and the air ran all night. No worries!

Are your girls adventuresome or timid? Show them the web site and details of the rides so that you don't waste time waiting for something that they will chicken out from.
Do they like the characters? Do you know about the autograph books? Lots of kids this age seem into that (I have older boys, so mine aren't). I was at WDW last week and the few kids that were there were all about the characters. If your girls want pictures and autographs, find out when and where the characters will be available in advance (if possible).
PINS! It's all about the pins these days. Pin trading has taken over WDW in a BIG way. Most pins are $6.50 each, but some are as much as $10-$12 apiece. Watch your step here - it's easy to become instantly addicted. I give my boys their own souvenir money when we arrive and I never give in & give them more. The 12 year old gets $35 and the 17 year old gets $50. They haven't complained so far and I don't have to listen to constant begging.
Also, if someone poops out - stop! Either find a quiet place to rest, or go back to your resort for a nap/swim break. You'll want to be able to make through the fireworks without falling asleep!
Since you'll be offsite the first night, you might consider driving over to the Poly to watch the fireworks from the beach, followed by the Electrical Water Pagent. It's also nice to tour around the Poly while you're there - very nice resort.
If you have more specific questions, I'll be happy to try and help.

Here's one..............Take the monorail and tell the CM that it's your kids first time and then ask if you can sit all the way in the front. It's so neat and my daughter loved it. My husband and I loved it as well.:D

thanks!

Thank all of u sooo much for your advice. I'm particularly glad to hear that air thing seems to be fixed. We are all hot-natured! I have given my children a spending allowance too. They get $20 a day for extra snacks and souvenirs or whatever. I won't be able to budge on that even if I wanted to. My husband has been very tolerant of my planning frenzy since he is very laid back, so when we arrive I'm handing control over to him. Stress freee!!
Love the monorail idea and will try it. Once again, thanks so much! This website is the bomb. 8 days and counting!:sohappy:

Back in the day you could ride with the driver no problem. Now there's a super line. We find if you take a few minutes and jump on the inner resort monorail line or the Epcot line you are more likely to still be able to ride with the driver without waiting for 15 trains to come through the station ;)

Riding with the pilot on the monorail

Another tip for securing the front car of the monorail with the pilot, is to ask the cast member(s) on the platform as soon as you arrive. They will direct you to a place to wait, or hold you in a spot and usher you on when your train arrives. Also, be super nice to the CMs and the pilot.
We had more luck getting the front car on the MK Express (from TTC to MK & from MK to TTC) than the other routes. Also, if you take the monorail from the TTC to Epcot, you will get to loop through Future World before arriving at the Epcot station. VERY cool. The monorail departs Epcot without going through FW on the way back to the TTC. Good luck and enjoy!

Ok, this is a great tip! :sohappy:

I always forget which way loops around since we usually drive over to Epcot from Ft Wilderness.

I've said it once, I'll say it again, DUring our preparation for our Thanksgiving Trip, we have made great use of the "Disney For Kids, By Kids" book. My daughters get it out on a weekly basis and the excitement never ends.

Yesterday, my youngest asked why I work. I told her it was to earn money for our house, food, clothes, etc. And she said, "Like Disney World?" - Quite cute.

 Hummm we just got back from POP and the air still will not go below 68!! :goodnevil It is still motion controled and will go off at night!

It was very warm 86-89 while we were there, so 68 does not feel that cool, especially when it has been off all the time you are gone and after everyone takes a HOT shower-- Can get stuffy--

One thing I noticed this time was that on the controls you have a fan speed auto, lo and high-- make sure to put it on high! If you have a real problem call maintenance and they can help you out. We did that in Jan. he told us that some of the rooms AC had not been hooked up yet! :fork: Then he set ours up. I would imagine that now with POP being open for a while all of the rooms should be at least hooked up. ?????

I read on another post that they got there AC fixed so it would go down to 60-- "JUST CALL" if you have a problem! They were very nice when we did.

Hope you have a fun time. The game room at POP is really great--However, look forward to spending $$ in there. Ha Ha They do have tickets to get a few things. ( not much exciting, but the kids like it ) The food court has a few more choices than the other value resorts and a " Slushy" machine!! Another favorite.

Make sure to go to Downtown to the Once Upon a Toy store and of course the Lego store. Owww lots of goodies there! Have a great time and take lots of pictures!!
