First time with a digital camera

We are going to bring a digital camera with us on our upcoming trip. My wife wanted me to ask if there is anywhere on (Or close to) Disney property where we can go to upload pictures from our memory sticks onto CDs so that we can take more pictures when we run out of memory.

Cool right there on Main Street :D How are the lines? Is there a good time of day to avoid them? Any idea of a price range and if CM discounts would apply (My wife is a CM)

Hi! We were just there the beginning of August. Our SD card was filled up and we were in MGM. We went to the MGM cameral shop and they told us that they would put 125 pictures on a cd for $12.99. We had over 400 pictures! We went to Walgreen's and had all of them put on 1 CD for $2.99 and they even gave us a picture index. I know the Walgreen's on 192 and International Drive had a self-service machine. However, after you download them the photolab employee has to put them on the disk and print the index. We waited about 45 minutes for this, but it was worth it for the difference in price. Also, that particular Walgreen's is open 24 hours so you can go after the park closes and not waste any park time.

Hope this helps,

PS Don't forget your manual. :hammer: We just got our camera and left the instruction manual at home. Finally someone at the Kodak camera center on Main Street in the MK helped us with our flash problem.

Yes that does help :) Thanks for the tip about the instruction manual! It's not something I would have thought to bring, but is a very good idea! Thanks again :)

Also consider just getting a few more memory cards. Getting them on sale at Best Buy or Circuit City can be fairly inexpensive. Oh, and don't forget your charger!

Good idea about extra memory cards. Our camera uses an SD card. We found out that WalMart.Com has memory cards much cheaper online than at the stores. We paid $39.99 for a 128 mb card. They were 89.99 at the store. Just a helpful hint!

This was going to be my suggestion as well, especially if your camera uses cheaper memory. I finally broke down and bought a couple of 512MB cards for about $80 each. One GB card costs about the same as two 512's, but I like to use two cards for security (i.e., when it's full I leave it at the hotel room safely, so if I loose my camera/card I still have some of my pictures.)

I'm not sure how much memory sticks cost, but it's really worth the investment to get at least one large-capacity media. If you think about how much we pay for 35mm film and developing, compared to how many pics you can put on a card/stick and the fact that you can reuse it indefinately, it's really a deal. I must confess, I've spent $100 easily on WDW vacations years ago just between film and processing.

That said, if it's not an option to get more memory the Wal-Green's service above does work great. I've only used it once, but it was very effiicent and worth it if you have transportation. If you don't generally take a lot of pics, and are only going to be doing it at WDW, then it's your best/most cost-effective option.

Clearly none of you have blown an entire gig of memory on one parade.

I'm a big advocate of either downloading nightly or finding some place to DL your pics to a CD. Yes, Disney does charge about 15 buck, and yes i believe CM discount would apply. They have a machine there in Expo hall that accepts memory cards and has a CD burner. While Walgreens is cheap, Running over to main street in a pinch is the occasional godsend.

Also i'm a big advocate of BHPhotovideo.com for memory cards. All the professionals that i know stick ONLY to sandisk and lexar. (PhotoRescue is a godsend)

We did the Walgreen thing too...$2.99 and they'll put as many pictures on the disk until it's full...700mb. If you do it inside the parks, they only do 125 pictures no matter what the size and it's $12.99 as mentioned previously.

NOTE: I was told that there was going to be a self-serve type machine installed in the lobby of the Contemporary where you can download the pix. Same price as in the parks.

LOL...I've had good luck with three Simpletech cards, 256mb each. I bought two of them at buy.com and, believe it or not, I got one for $20 on Ebay. I was worried about that one but it turned out to be brand new and works fine....phewww!

There are some pretty good buys out there for these cards so ya gotta shop around.

Dave, have ya had to use photo rescue? How did it work?

Thanks for all the great tips everyone :D

We got a Sony Cyber-Shot 4.1mp and have been happy with it so far but have not really taken nearly the amount of pictures with it yet that we will be taking at WDW. We take ALOT of pictures and so it will be good to not have to spend over $200 when we come back on developing them lol! Walgreens sounds like a good plan for us, since it's right by Chic Fil A mmmmmm Chicken :D

Yes, Walmart. Disney is way too expensive.

I second that. I use Sandisk and Lexar exclusively for my pro stuff as well as my family pics. Have never had any problems.

Hehe, same here. That's where I buy most of my stuff. I did however get a great deal on a 256mb Sandisk SD card a month or so back on Buy.com. After a rebate, I think it only came to about $50. I carry 2 256mb cards but plan on picking up a couple more. The only problem I have with larger cards is the fear of having a problem with the card. Losing 256megs of images is easier to handle than losing a gig of pics.
How is the quality of the Walgreens cd's? Any compression or image degradation? This question is probably geared more toward PhotoDave219... :animwink:

IMHO, Walgreens equipment is crap. I was a manager for Walmart's one hour photo and used to do a LOT of corrections for Walgreens and a few other companies, also did a lot of corrections for the do it yourselfers on the Kodak kiosk. since I left they have installed fuji machines for digital where you do it yourself and do the corrections right there. It is a wonderful machine, give it a try.

One thing is to make sure you're familiar with how the camera works befor eyou visit the parks. It's easier to work with equipment you're familiar with than fumbling around trying to figure out how to turn the thing on.

I did one hour lab management for 15 years and did some software consulting for Eastman Kodak. I can make a color correction or two. hehe. Would actually rather just transfer my files as is, to cd to free up my SD cards. Then do my figiting in Photoshop when I get home. Do straight transfers to cd work ok? I just don't want to lose any quality in doing this. I'm thinking I may just pick up a few more cards. I'm sure I can shoot a thousand pictures in two weeks. Last thing I need is to go start printing out pictures down there. I'll go broke and I'll dive my wife crazy... Thanks Gail !!
