My family and I are going to WDW this june. we are staying at the Art of Animation resort in the finding nemo suite. With the dining plan.

I am so overwhelmed already with just the planning. i just finalized our dinner reservations, but am so worried that as first timers we are going to miss out on some great things, just because I didnt know about them.

I have tried to google for first timer tips but I just get sent back WDW.com or to other search engines.

the kids are 6, 7, and 8.

Anyone got any tips of things first timers should definitely do?

Tops on my list would be the nighttime shows in the parks: Main Street Electrical Parade and Wishes at Magic Kingdom, Illuminations at Epcot and Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios.

Try as many rides as you have time for and see what you and your kids like, but some of our favorites when our kids were 6-8 were Splash Mt. at MK, Soarin' at Epcot, and Kali River Rapids and the Safari ride at Animal Kingdom.

My primary tip would be to buy a guidebook (the "Unofficial Guide" is my favorite) and peruse it to see what the current attractions and shows are. Make a list of "must-dos" and work out a general touring plan, and then relax and be willing to "go with the flow." WDW is so chock-full of things to see and do, there is no way you can possibly do it all in one trip -- nor will you be disappointed, since it gives you a reason to keep coming back!

I think the "can't-miss" items are different for everyone. For me, the big "must-do" is always heading straight to the Magic Kingdom when we arrive, for pictures in front of CInderella's Castle, ice cream on Main Street, and riding the "3 Mountains" and the Haunted House. After that, the entire rest of the trip is just icing on the cake for me. As far as "extras" that you don't want to miss, I highly recommend doing the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner show at some point. : )

I agree the Unofficial GuIde to Walt Disney World is the best.

The Best advice I can give you is don't over plan. There is going to be things that you wont get to Walt Disney World is huge and after numerous tips I always experience something new that I have not done before.

Relax and enjoy your trip and see what each day will bring!!!

the best advice i can give you is: don't over DO. it's basically what brucie is telling you as well.

i know a lot of people will tell you "make sure you ride this, make sure you get on that." honestly, yeah, you're going to want to hit the big stuff (like space, big thunder and splash mountains, pirates, haunted mansion in MK, soarin' in epcot, tower of terror and rock n roller coaster in DHS and expedition everest and the safari in AK, to name a few), but other than that: HAVE FUN!

so many times i see people sprinting around disney, not soaking in any ambiance, not enjoying themselves. they're overheated, overworked and overtired. their kids are crying, hot, exhausted and hungry. that's not really a vacation, is it?

listen to your kids. if they're tired, head back to the room and go back to the parks later that night. don't be afraid to take a nap or hit the pool mid-day to beat the heat. just enjoy it.

truthfully, there is a TON to see at WDW. but what will make it enjoyable experience for your children and for you (and increase the probability that you'll come back again) is to treat it like a vacation and not a race to collect the most experiences.

at least, that's my $ .02

Here's my official first timer tip:

Get the 2012 Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World and read everything -- it will answer every single thing you need to know as a first timer, and give you all those tips you need....

You'll also then have a good sense of what to expect and things will run smoothly....

Those folks know what they are doing, and their touring plan work exactly as they have described. You will cover everything and miss none of those surprises....

The biggest problem with first timers is the feeling that they are going to miss out.

Guess what - you will miss out on things. There is just so much to WDW it's impossible not to miss out. Try to relax. The unofficial guide is very good - and the ride time app is free if you buy the book. Your enjoyment will be largely determined by your expectations. If your expectations are to do every ride and every show you will be dissapointed. If your expecations are to go to a immersive magical place and experience it with your family then you will love it - and the stuff you missed you save for the next trip.

Make sure to do the Kid-c o t stops all around Epcot. Look in the map for all of the locations. It's a cool souvenir for the kids.

Again at Epcot, try to catch Myuki making her special candy in Japan. Very Cool. My kids loved it.

Also do the Kim Possible Adventures in Epcot.

And have you thought about Pin Trading? My kids also love doing that. I picked up a 20 pack on eBay last trip and just bought a 25 pack this morning for my June trip for under $15.

And don't forget to get several Dole Whip Floats at Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom.

At Animal Kingdom, make sure to see Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo the musical. Take your time touring this park. It isn't a run thru it place. Slow Down, spend the day and enjoy the details.

thanks for the tips.. :)

I will look into that guide, do I have to buy from a book store? or will wal-mart carry it?

I am not worried about the rides, I am super excited to see my baby girls face light up the first time she sees Cinderella. I just hope I am able to catch it on film.. :)

For our family we always take a mid day break and especially since you are staying on property you just need to hop on a bus and go back to your resort, enjoy the pool, rest in your room you go back to the parks later feeling refreshed and rested. I agree the Unofficial Guide is great, have a wonderful time.

Amazon is usually a good place to go for WDW books like the Unofficial Guide.

If you have girls and they are into princesses, things like Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutiqe and princess meals like Cinderella's Royal Table, Royal Akershus, and Cinderella's dinner at 1900 Park Fare would likely be hits. BBB may be tough to book at this stage, but you can always bring your own princess gear or buy some at Castle Couture.

Make sure you also get 1st Visit buttons when you check in (you can also try Guest Services in the parks if they're out of them).

And like Fractal noted, there is just so much to do there that you really can't do everything in one trip. So, just making a list of things that seem to interest you most would probably be beneficial.

Side note- I've heard a lot of first time guests not know about FastPasses or know that they are included in the price of admission. They really are a wonderful thing...i.e. reducing the amt of time you spend waiting in line to ride.

Have a great trip and welcome to the boards!

My best advice is to try not to get overwhelmed with the hugeness of everything and forget to take time out for the simple things. When kids get cranky and you get tired, you'd be amazed at how wonderful the World is when you sit down in a quiet spot with an ice cream treat and just people watch. I'm so excited for you and your family. Enjoy your trip!

allears.net is a good place to start researching things, but I have found the forums on this site to be more informative than any other site I have visited. Any question you could possibly think of will have have someone with an answer here.

Here's the Book at Wal-mart ----- I think there is a way to check if it is available at your local store....they usually are....they are probably at Meijer, Target, K-mart as well....I often see them at Sams Club and Costco....

Amazon.com is also a great place to order it/

If you want to, do as we did. Many local libraries carry a copy of the most recent edition of the book. Check it out and look through it. If you feel it it what you want to own, go on Amazon and order it. It usually is not carried at places like Walmart, but Amazon and Barnes& Noble definitely carry it.

How long will you be in Disney? If you are going to be there at least 7 days, and you use the extra morning and evening hours and use the fastpass system, you will be able to do all of the major rides and see the parades and fireworks. Even though most of the members of this group recommend The Unofficial Disney Guide, I like Passporter and Birnbaums (both available at Barnes & Noble) better. Of course, things like this are just personal preference. I like that you can easily take the Passporter apart and take only the pages you need with you, and I like the storage folders for after the trip, and I like that they have kids score the rides. Don't be shy about asking cast members anything you have questions about. Learning to use the fastpass system will save you soooo much time.
If you look on the pass, it will not only tell you when to return, but it will tell you when you can get another pass. Sometimes, like with Toy Story in Hollywood Studios, the return time is so far away, they let you get another fastpass to another ride in about two hours. That can happen with Soarin, in Epcot, also.
In MK, Peter Pan will be the longest line most anytime of day. We have been there at 1:00 a.m. for afterhours and still had to wait in line. I recommend you go there first thing and get a fastpass. Conversely, we have been able to ride Pirates of the Caribbean seven times in a row and been the only people on the ride after midnight. Remember, though, that not all rides are open during extra magic hours. The Jungle Cruise usually closes earlier than the other rides. Make sure and get a daily schedule and park map as soon as you enter. You will go right by them as you enter the parks. They will help you not to miss parades, shows and such.
I'm probably giving you to much info. Sorry. I just get so excited for people when it's their first trip. Even though it's been years for us, I still remember the joy of that first trip. We will be there for a short trip in May, and a long trip in June. One other thing, we carry rainsuits with us. We have found that when it's raining, our ponchos still let us get pretty wet. The rainsuits work great. While others are holed up in the shops, we can walk right to the next thing we want to ride. They also work great on Kali River Rapids.

Allears.net

Allears.net is a very good website!
Get to the parks early and use FASTPASS. Take a break! Go back at night to see Illuminations @EPCOT, WISHES @MK, and FANTASMIC! @HS.
MK- Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear, Teacups, Peter Pan, Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Pirates.
AK- Safari, Festival of the Lion King or Nemo ( don't try to do both), Kali River Rapids, Expedition Everest, Dinosaur, and Primeval Whirl.
HS- Tower of Terror, Rockin Roller Coaster, Beauty and the Beast show, Indiana Jones or Lights Motor Action show (don't try to do both), Star Tours, and Toy Story Mania!(must get fast pass or you will wait 90 minutes plus!).
EPCOT- Mission Space, Soarin (must get Fastpass or you will wait 90 minutes plus), World Showcase: Kidcot Funstops @ each country! Eat @ an EPCOT restaurant.
Book a character dinner @ Chef Mickey's in the Contemporary.
Youtube is actually a good place to see and hear all things WDW!

Good luck! Have a magical vacation!:sohappy:

AK-...Festival of the Lion King or Nemo ( don't try to do both),...

May I ask why you would say to not do both? It's very easy to do both in a full day at the park. One in the morning and one in the afternoon.

We do it every trip and have plenty of time for all of the attractions and the shows.

I am going to have to agree with what a lot of people are saying on here as well! The guide is a must and it really does give you something to go off of. But I can speak from experience... Last year was my first time to WDW and I was so excited and wanted to see everything. I dragged my poor boyfriend around trying to get on every ride and see every show and we were beat by the end of our vacation, which kind of defeats the purpose of a vacation! This year we went back and had a completely different experience and just took our time and enjoyed everything. I guess thats my biggest piece of advice, just relax and enjoy your surroundings and dont rush past something magical! We did not really like Epcot our first year and then enjoyed it immensly this year by going to the world showcase at night and touring the countries with all the lights and staying for illuminations. Animal Kingdom we enjoyed but rushed through our first year because there are not alot of attractions but this year we walked all the trails and realized we had missed out on so much! You will have an amazing time! With the right outlook it is impossible not to enjoy WDW! :sohappy:
