First aid, medical, hospitals...

Hi.

We are coming from quite a distance and have a very accident-prone toddler. Has anyone here had a minor or major medical problem while staying at Disney? Do they have EMTs around to respond and where are the best places for first aid?

Also, if anyone has needed to go to a local ER, could you advise me of the best place? How did that work?

(I'm a worry-wort mommy BUT I'd like to know ahead of time)
:)

We've used the first aid station in the MK and were treated very quickly by two very nice RN's (they were school nurses who worked there summers...my dream job). Should you need anything more then a CM can help with contacting a medical crew. There are walk in clinics and a hospital nearby, but we have never had to use them, but I'm sure somebody will be able to post info for you as I know others have needed to go off site for medical attention.

Also as the desk when you check in for that info (phone numbers, directions, etc).

On call MD's number is 407-238-2000...very expensive. Turner Drugs store that delivers number is 407-828-8125. There is a clinic, I do not have that number, but I want to say I saw it in passing one time, if anyone has that number, please post!

We've had to avail ourselves of the First Aid station at AK once when my son took a spill on some wet pavement and tore up his knee. The folks there were very nice and made the entire situation very comfortable.

Disney uses Reedy Creek FD for their emergency needs, and everything I've heard/read is that they are very professional and responsive.

I know some Publix and CVSs have small "doc in a box" offices inside them, and we recently used the latter on a trip up to Washington D.C. when both my wife and I came down with bronchitis. They take all forms of insurance, and of course getting the prescriptions filled was very easy.

Hope this helps alleviate some of your concerns. :)

Orlando is a good sized city which has everything from walk-in clinics to hospital trauma centers, along with one, soon to be two, Children's Hospitals with pediatric specialists in all areas.

There is really no need to worry about receiving medical care while vacationing at WDW - there is a real, modern world right outside the gates ;). Just be sure to make a list of your child's doctors with phone numbers, medications, any allergies, and a brief medical history, and keep it on a card in your purse. You might want to do the same for yourselves, too.

I have been to the local hospital ER, very sick, but it was just like being at home, very friendly and professional. The one test room i went into had Finding Nemo all over the walls and ceiling. I got there at 10:30 pm and left at 7:30 am . then went back to the hotel front desk and as someone else said gave them my scripts for medicines and they contacted Turners Pharmacy and they delivered to the hotel, then the cost went on your room charge.

You may also want to consider either laminating that card, or putting it inside a ziploc bag, just in case you and/or your purse gets wet on the rides or in the Florida rains. :)

We had to make a "surprise" trip the ER when we were at Disney in 2007. I accidentally pulled my daughters arm out of her socket while putting her bathing suit on her. It sounds really bad- but docs said it actually happens a lot. They called it nurses elbow. She couldn't move her arm and she was only 6 mo's old at the time, so I had no idea what was wrong. We did not know where to go, so I got out one of Disney's maps and found Celebration Hospital right on the map. It was very easy to find and everyone there was nice and friendly. The were also fast- we got right in and out.

Thank goodness for that, eh? I'm glad you mentioned a hospital in Celebration. Nice to know your options when you go someplace unfamiliar...
Many thanks!

My friend just returned from Disney and her toddler got an ear infection - she was telling me of a Dr. who makes house calls (hotel calls?) to all of the area hotels. That's his whole business. She had used him before and it was a great, non-stressful experience each time. I'll get the # and post it.

I myself hit the first aid for medication on my trip last year at the Studios. The guys that were working the center were very nice and just asked me to sign-in and they asked what headache medication I would like and gave me water for 1 packet now and they even gave me a 2nd packet for later.

We had to take our daughter to one at Busch Gardens and the guys there were very nice and patient with her. He cleaned her cut, put ointment and a band-aid on and we were on our way.

When my son was two(?) he came down with croup in the middle of the night. I swear he stopped breathing for a second and I panicked. The shower steam wasn't happening fast enough so we called the front desk (YC). They called the paramedics and they were there in under 10 minutes. Fine tuned machine...they had CM's blocking the elevators for a quick in and out. We were taken to a hospital nearby (not the closest since it was determined not to be a full on emergency). We were there until morning, at which time we called the business card that had been given to us and Disney came and picked us up.

We weren't in the room an hour before DS ran head on into the nightstand. Huge lump on his head. We took him to the walk-in clinic (just off disney property by the Crossroads Center). I wasn't thrilled with that place. The Dr. looked at him and said he's already be dead if it was anything to worry about. After the night we had I almost killed her. Anyway, my son picked up a stomach bug while waiting in the waiting room and was sick the rest of the trip. DH and I got very sick when we got home.

The bright side was that we took an extra trip that year at Xmas to make up for the horrible trip and we've gone the same time ever since!

The name of the practice is Resort Physicians. Their website is under construction - but if you google it, it's the first link that comes up. I'm not sure if there are any rules against posting a phone number.
