Farewell, Lizzie: a Bitter Breakup between Disney and Hilary Duff

I for one am glad that Hillary Duff is finally out of Disney. While I have the respect for her, she still annoys me to no end for some reason. Perhaps (Strike that, probably) because Eisner & Co kept on butchering the crap out of her.

On one hand, Disney makes a good decision: they refuse to pay Duff's high salary, which saves them $$ for future short-term, idiotic endeavors ;). On the other hand, LM was on fire, and I'm sure that in the long-term outlook, Disney could have easily made up for what they paid Duff. The television show ... movies ... books ... CD's ... the upcoming -- upcoming no more, obviously -- clothing line ... we're talking millions upon millions of dollars here
.

But it also shows that Disney wont cave in because one star threatens to leave.

If they went with what she wanted, it would be deal after deal. I am glad for once Disney put their foot down!

Great post MrPromey. I actually liked the show, but then you eventually realized that Hilary could not act very well. I wish Disney would see that certain shows, like Even Stevens are worth keeping around.

Well it looks like we were right about her parents:

Hilary Duff said goodbye to Disney and the "Lizzie McGuire" empire because, as her mother puts it, "We weren't feeling the love."

Susan Duff tells Entertainment Weekly for its June 13 issue, "They weren't giving Hilary the respect she deserved."

The 15-year-old actress has starred in the hugely popular Disney Channel sitcom "Lizzie McGuire" since 2001 and the spin-off film, "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," which has grossed about $40 million since it opened May 2.

But negotiations broke down last month between Disney and Duff's representatives over how much money she would receive for a "Lizzie McGuire Movie" sequel and a new ABC prime-time series that would follow her character to high school.

Duff reportedly had received offers of six figures per episode from at least two competing networks, while ABC offered $35,000 an episode, the magazine reported. As for the movie sequel, the two sides couldn't agree on terms of a $500,000 bonus for the young star.

Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group president Nina Jacobson said in a statement: "We tried very hard to close a deal on the 'Lizzie McGuire' sequel. We think Hilary is very talented and we very much wanted to stay in business with her."

But ABC is struggling with ratings, so they have less money to offer then other networks.

Remember that they cut seven actors from The Practice because the $6 million per episode budget was cut to $3 million per episode and most actors didn't want a pay cut.

i heard a little about this but didnt get the whole story exactly who did they cut and why?? ...thats horrible, 7 actors!?! were they any of the main ones?

In an effort to pull the long-running, Emmy-winning legal drama back to budget, creator David E. Kelley has announced that a half-dozen key players--Dylan McDermott, Lara Flynn Boyle, Kelli Williams, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Chyler Leigh and Marla Sokoloff--will not be back in court.

That is sad, The Practice will be DOA come next fall.

Quite frankly, I think they should have pulled the plug on this show a season or two ago anyway. It was a good show but I think there is a natural shelf life for this kind of thing. You can only watch the stunned look of the casts faces as an impossible result comes back from the jury in their favor so many times and they can only kill, conspire to kill, tainting cases and various other things so many times.

Can't say I'll be really sorry to see this show go. I really liked it for a time, but after a while it stopped grabbing my attention.

Plus, this IS a show on the Disney Channel. Not NBC, ABC, CBS or FOX. Her show doesn't have nearly the ratings and tv sponsers that these shows have. Her asking price is ridiculous.

Exactly. While not a bad actress for her age , she isn't Julia Roberts, or Ray Romano. Those guys have more expirience (and in my opinion) are more deserving of it.
Supposing that she is the one asking for all the money,( i'm trying not to jump to conclusions here) and neither her mom nor agent are behind it, I say pooh. If she loves acting enough she should take whatever shes offered.$35,000 an ep ain't so bad and has probably already amounted to way more than $100, 000.
