Extra Bun

On my last trip to Disney, my brother and I would order a double cheeseburger meal and an extra bun (for around 60 cents). I read somewhere that some restaurants were now charging MUCH more (several dollars?) for an extra bun. Can anyone report whether this is true? If so, can anyone name counter service restaurants with extra buns for under $1? Thanks!

Last time I was at the parks and did this at DHS the cost was $3.00. Assuming it is at least similar across WDW, it may be difficult to find one for under $1

That's ridiculous. Discouraging sharing with a buffet is legitimate, but this? When you've already paid for a set portion of food, what difference does it make how many people you split it with? It's like they're penalizing people for trying to make economic or healthy (smaller portion sizes) decisions.

They allready have single cheese burgers on the menu.

What they are doing is setting the price of two cheeseburgers equal to the price of a double cheeseburger plus an extra bun.

Now if they ONLY offered a double cheeseburger, then I can understand your point about portion size. But they already have a smaller portion offering on the menu.

If you want to, you can still take a double cheeseburger and a knife and split it in half.

Thats what we did the rest of the time. To be honest, after I thought about the "why" behind the three dollar charge it made sense to me, we were just spoiled by the 60 cent charge is year's past.

It was a "secret" bargin that many people used.

Same goes for when they had free peanut butter and jelly on the condiment stand at the Value food courts. $0.75 of bread meant for toast and hit up the condiment stand, and you had a sub one dollar PBJ.

When it was just a few people doing it, it was worth more to Disney to still offer the free condiment as a nice thing. When the "tip" was all over the internet and in every guide book and the jell and peanut butter tubs were constantly empty, then they started keeping the peanut butter with the cream chease INSIDE the register corral. As far as I know, they still dont charge for it, but now it is more "closely monitored"

My guess is that the 60 cent bun was the same way. When a few people were doing it, no problem, the extra bun was there for maybe people who did not want a hamburger, but maybe a lettuce and tomato with mayo (like a BLT, hold the B). But once the sale of double cheeseburgers + a bun outnumbered the sales of two cheeseburgers, then they had to do something.

True enough, I suppose. I have to wonder how well this works for Disney, though. In other words, how many people who were already wise to the double cheeseburger+bun trick will now be willing to pay for two single burgers for what amounts to an extra slice of bread on each, or pay $3 for a bun, instead of just cutting a double in half? Will Disney actually make money off this, or just end up with a larger inventory of unsold buns in the back?

Technically, they always have it available but I'm finding more and more locations lately don't actually list a single on the menu board. I know the Liberty Inn for one example offers zero "single" burger options on the menu board. (Other than the Kid's Meal offering.) I suspect Disney is hoping people will just order the double - even if they don't want it and don't finish all of it - because the average guest won't realize they have a choice of buying a smaller, cheaper item. (Much like it's not obvious on the board you can order ANY of the main entrees without the side for less.)

If nothing else, this seems to conclusively demonstrate how overpriced Disney food is.

If they have to charge $3 for a bun on top of a double stack just to recoup the menu price of two single burgers — a bun that's already been demonstrated to be worth no more than 60 cents, assuming they were just breaking even at that price — then that tells you there's a pretty fat profit margin attached to those singles. If I were the kid behind the counter, I'd almost be embarrassed to say a bun "costs" $3.

(Course, I guess you could turn it around and say it demonstrates what a "bargain" the double burger is as well.)

Actually I just remembered, the CM suggested that we use a "snack credit" for the bun. We were paying OOP for the meal so just took the three dollar hit.

That seemed pretty strange to me, but I guess it fits the accepted definition of a "snack"....

This is actually why I did get the extra bun..ignorance and admitted stupidity on my part.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "stupidity" not to know they sell singles. They certainly don't go out of their way to announce that these days on many menu boards. At least moving forward you know you can always ask for a single to avoid the "overpriced bun" issue in the future. :animwink:

There is a LOT that WDW sells that is not on the menu board.

That is something that has confused me at times. Lean over and look at the cash register - there is loads of stuff on there.

At first I thought it was because they wanted people to buy a combo - say burger and fries, as opposed to just a burger. But then I was thinking how many people would like two single burgers and one side of fries, and instead split the double with fries. They could be selling a lot of tow single one fry deals.

Sometimes I really dont understand their QSFB planning.

And I know I said someone may want to make a lattuce and tomato sandwitch, but really, aside from making an extra burger, who would buy a single bun?

"Enjoy, It's rich in bunly goodness"

Ah, I was runnning into quote withdrawl there for a while. :)

Why don't you simply buy a package of hamburger buns and throw them in your suitcase? Not only could you make two cheeseburgers out of one double bacon cheeseburger, but you could also go to Pecos Bill's and make some free vegetarian condiment sandwiches.

They get all flat when I put them in the space bags.

Even at the food courts they will break up a combo, At breakfast i always get the egg combo without meat since I'm allergic to pork, they always charge a lesser amount even though I don't request it.
