Express Monorail Problems..

WDW monorail system has run in shuttle mode before.... When Mark VI monorails were brought online, the express and resort ran in shuttle while they enlarged the holes in the contemporary to accomodate the slightly large train dimensions...

O MY that was an interesting time back in 87 & 88. They were actually using the express side of the GF platform before the resort openened whie other stations were having work done, which included not just enlarging the entry/exit of Contemporary, but raising the platforms heighs so it's a smaller step into the markVI since it is a few inches higher than the markIV was.

Not sure if ANY of this info has been posted, but with all the recent lightning storms we've had in Central Florida, the express beam was struck by lightning a few nights ago..

The lightning struck the stantion plate on the beam where it 'switches' with the epcot line.. The concrete on the beam adjacent to the plate was damaged.. So severely that disney had to do a 'quick' repair on it will fast-drying concrete patch..

Well, after a couple of days, the patch has started to crack and fall away, revealing the original (a little worse than original) damage...

Therefore, All trains rolling into and out of the TTC must maintain the lowest speed possible to prevent vibration on the beam in that area until it can be permanently repaired..

In other words.. The trains are going REALLY slow near the TTC right now.. painfully slow.... takes about 5 minutes to get to the contemporary from the TTC now.. The trains are allowed to resume normal traveling speed once the trailing car reaches a 3 pylon distance from the damaged area..

Hopefully they can get this fixed soon.... It really is hurting the systems efficiency.. May have to go into shuttle mode for a few days while a 'real fix' it put into action

Are you sure this is a recent event? I was there a couple of weeks ago and this very slow travel condition was happening but this afternoon at around 2PM everything was operating completely normally with no abnormal slowdowns at all.

It could be a couple week old of an 'event' but they had to start 'going slow' again because the patch didn't work....

I remember one night while working in Epcot, lightening hit a transformer, knocking out The Seas and the Epcot monorail line...let's just say that was an interesting night.
That's nothing ... try working when your entire park loses power, then we'll talk. :p

If they had to replace the beams, do you think they would even bother with the expense and just let it sit dormant? (i.e. River Country)

Disney management meeting:

Iger: Well the monorail us in bad shape it is an Icon of WDW we need to fix it and while we are at it extend to the other two parks!

Imagineer: No I have a better idea we should add Stich to SSE and since people live him so we will close the stich stage show in TL and it needs to be expanded to replace Fantasmic, it will be called Stichtasmic!

Iger: that us the best idea I've heard since we got rid of Horizons, here is a billion dollars let's do it!

You'll be fine using the monorails..... Shuttle mode is when they put one monorail on beam and use it going 'back and forth' avoiding one section of track.... the train never makes a complete circuit...

I do believe Disney will address the problem by repairing/replacing the section of beam.... just takes time.. I'm sure they'll have to take measurements, locate the correct molds (or fabricate new ones) etc.. this is like having a busted piece of a concrete on a bridge... not a big deal, but it has to be addressed.. the tires traveling over it also contribute to pre-mature wear if the surface is not the proper smoothness and grade..

I do think so.:shrug::lol:

Seriously...It's a unique part of WDW. I don't think they would kill it.

I'm not saying it's not. What I'm saying is that when that thing does need a complete overhaul it's going to be Monorail vs. Profit/Cash.

Nooooooow, let me ask you this, who's going to win that battle in Disney's eyes? They will turn the TTC into an attraction where you can board a "real live monorail"-- that doesn't move. Around that time, say 10 years or so they will finally be realizing that stitches sounds stage is a flop and they will throw a monorail on there and show the world "the future of transportation".

The future will still smell like a loaded diaper and a bag of Taco Bell that you left in the sweltering car for a few days.

I think if were any other attraction, yes. Then it's a matter of profit. But when you tinker with something that's beloved, and a symbol, I think it just comes down to HAVING to do it.
