I am not entirely sure why people keep making this comparison. The Covid-19 virus has its own characteristics that may not follow those of a typical flu season.
Everybody loves a good whataboutism.

It's just to show the sensationalism that is going in the media and the level of panic created. More click$. You have unbridled speculation being substituted for facts. And the facts that are out about something which can be considered comparable are just ignored because it isn't a profitable $tory for the media.
it's good to be skeptical about the media but in this case, there are actually sensational things happening. Most of the stories I've seen are sourced from the WHO, CDC and similar organizations...such as infection rates, death rates etc. It's just to show the sensationalism that is going in the media and the level of panic created. The flu and COVID-19 are immoral! The flu is a serious health problem, but so is COVID. The morality rate from flu is 6%, the morality rate from covid is currently 2-3% going off Chinese numbers which are suspect. There also is early signs that you can reinfected less then a month later and that reinfection can be much more severe. Also 48% mortality if you require ICU care. We just don’t know enough about covid yet and it’s human nature to fear the unknown more. Remember the swine flu 10 years ago? Best case scenario COVID hits the world like that, but this could be far more deadly.

The financial repercussions are likewise being touted by major financial organizations and very large companies and not being fabricated by bloggers AFAICT.
I agree with that statement as most expect the Olympics to continue as scheduled, even those interviewed in that story. The only reason to run the story is for the perspective of "look how bad this could be"Every news outlet ranging from all ends of the political spectrum from The Washington Post to Fox News have fallen into the blackhole of sensationalizing the story based on nothing but speculation and fear. While organizations like CDC and WHO can give statistics and fact based information, the interpretation and speculation done on the part of the media do the most damage. One of the lead stories on the WP right now is canceling the 2020 Summer Olympics purely based on worst case speculation. You have an influx of Tabloid style reporting at media outlets which used to be fact based. But crazy $peculation leads to click$.

Just a little observation from my small window on the world.I'd keep a close eye on Tokyo and Paris over the next few days.
Reports there are that COVID-19 has hit Italy and much of Europe, and is spreading in Japan.
Not just Disneyland Paris, but Europa and Alton Towers could be hit if they have to close should COVID-19 reaches those locations as well. And there is extreme concern that if the recent outbreak in Italy reaches France... Paris could be shut down as well.

Why those two parks that are already closed for another month? Not just Disneyland Paris, but Europa and Alton Towers could be hit if they have to close should COVID-19 reaches those locations as well.
It’s their off season, the later opens next week. Why those two parks that are already closed for another month?
Only temporarily until the Coronavirus is under control.
That's what Chapek mentioned in the CNBC interview, the Disney shareholder. If the stock performance is poor, his CEO reign will be a short one.Bobby, I just heard about your promotion!!! CONGRATULATIONS Now you will have full control to cut costs everywhere; slash budgets, cut all park improvements, cut staff, reduce quality, all while raising prices on EVERYTHING!!!
What a great thing for the most important entity, the Disney shareholder.
