Outside of the statements by the President of the United States. Orange County, California, has declared a state of emergency to prepare for a possible outbreak of novel coronavirus, despite having no current cases. Los Angeles International is also cleaning public areas and facilities at least once an hour with High Traffic areas being cleaned more often.

In Trump and Pence 's news conference tonight, one of the doctors in Trump's team speaking said there will be more coronavirus cases in the USA.

I'm guessing this is in response to the Korean Air flight attendant who tested positive?

Schools in Japan have an unexpected closure for a month due to the coronavirus. So far, the 2020 Olympic games in Japan this summer is still on.. Can one imagine if all USA schools were closed for a month??

Every news outlet ranging from all ends of the political spectrum from The Washington Post to Fox News have fallen into the blackhole of sensationalizing the story based on nothing but speculation and fear. While organizations like CDC and WHO can give statistics and fact based information, the interpretation and speculation done on the part of the media do the most damage. One of the lead stories on the WP right now is canceling the 2020 Summer Olympics purely based on worst case speculation. You have an influx of Tabloid style reporting at media outlets which used to be fact based. But crazy $peculation leads to click$.
In highschool I took a mass media class. One of the examples was a hypothetical headline that was something like:

"Global Terror: 150,000 Dead"

Followed by an article about how 150,000 people die every day worldwide. It's all about spin, clicks and eyeballs. People need to understand that the news media is a business.

That said, the biggest issue and the reason for the drastic actions taken to slow the spread is that it is unknown how contagious it is. If similar to the flu then maybe it isn't such a big deal. If it is much more contagious and if the morality rate is higher then it is a bigger deal.

Right now the mortality rate is probably over estimated since they have discovered asymptomatic and mild cases. You'd have to test a large sample of people in Huwan that aren't showing symptoms to determine the real number of infections.

If everyone in the world could use this as a "teachable moment" and do simple things like coughing and sneezing into their elbow, washing hands frequently, safely cooking and handling food and not coming into close contact with others when sick, we'd significantly reduce the spread of covid-19 and many other illnesses.

IMO the news media is responsible for the hysteria associated with the coronavirus just like they did with Ebola, SARS, MERS and all amounted to nothing-- deaths in US from----Ebola-2, SARS-0, MERS-0, Coronavirus-0-- flue 1300 so far this year. You should be more afraid of the flu
Not quite accurate. The CDC 's figures for the flu this season are 16,000-41,000 deaths.

And for people who are elderly, or have autoimmune issues, or who have friends and/or family who are this is something to worry about, flu shot or not.

Stand corrected reported an old count and miss typed. Even more one should worry about the flu

There is really no point in worrying about the flu. Unless you want to live in a positive pressure room with an airlock, there isn't much you can really do about it other than get the flu shot and hope you don't come into contact with a strain that isn't covered by the shot.

With the current coronavirus, if you don't travel outside the US there's no reason to spend your life worrying right now. Yes, it is likely to spread but is it worth shutting down the country and causing a recession due to panic?

Over 37,000 people are killed every year in the US in motor vehicle accidents. We could prevent all of them by shutting down the entire road system. If that was proposed, it would be correctly seen as lunacy. Yet, we are prepared to disrupt normal life to prevent a similar number of deaths?

I don't really understand why individual people are so afraid of COVID-19. It's not especially dangerous; there are flu strains that are more deadly. It's different on a macro scale, because if millions of people are sick in a short period of time that will have a tremendous effect on the economy. But the vast majority of those people will be sick for a few days and then get better, the same as having a cold or the flu. Even the symptoms aren't especially severe.
Some reasons why folks are afraid of the Coronavirus are:
It’s more contagious then our flu strains.
You can have it and spread it without knowing it.
The two week quarantine may (or may not) be long enough, we just don’t know.
We are familiar with our flu strains and can treat them.
There is a lot we don’t know about the Coronavirus.

Dr Tedros also told reporters that US President Donald Trump was not wrong to compare the new coronavirus to flu.

"If I’m asked to advise communities about to prevent this virus, I would give them the same advice as I give for flu – wash hands with soap, don't touch your face, keep 6ft distance etc," he said at the daily WHO press conference”

And

“So far, the new coronavirus, dubbed COVID-19, has led to more than 75,000 illnesses and 2,000 deaths, primarily in mainland China. But that's nothing compared with the flu, also called influenza. In the U.S. alone, the flu has already caused an estimated 26 million illnesses, 250,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “

Just to keep things in perspective as opposed to the mass media frenzy.

That's a reason to be concerned about the impact on a global economy scale; it's still not a reason to be individually concerned about catching it because it's not a serious illness.

Except, of course, for the elderly or other high risk people, but that's true of absolutely any illness.

While coronavirus is definitely a problem, and an unnecessary issue created by China's communist regime, it is deeply troubling that the mass media seems to be attempting to create a hysteria/panic.
