The end of Sept. last year we were upgraded from a Standard to a Savannah room at AKL. It was our 20th Anniversary. It was a nice surprise and the first time we were celebrating anything special. Oh course, this was a very slow time to visit.

Actually we got an upgrade already with our first stay on property.
We were just checking in at the WL and after the CMs gave us a really warm welcome and said that they hope that we will enjoy our stay I answered "I sure will do as it is a childhood dream of mine to finally stay at the WL, I always wanted to stay here since it opened". The female CM gave me very friendly smile and upgraded our room from standard view to courtyard view.

I've heard that it's much more likely to receive an upgrade if you don't do online check in. I was planning on trying this is our September trip, as I've done pre-check in as many times as possible. We rented DVC points at AKV, and booked a studio savanna view, and if I don't do online check in, (and we will be checking in later in the day by Disney standards, probably not until after 3), I'm HOPING to get an upgrade to a 1 bedroom! (I really want that washer/dryer!) We're going labor day week, which looks to be a much less busy time of year, and I plan on telling them that we are celebrating my son's 8th birthday (which we are) and it's always been a dream of his to stay at the AKL (which it has) and hopefully they will give us a good room! (And we're wanting a room with giraffe views). What are our chances here???

The one time I have gotten a room upgrade was at the AKL, and was a standard view to a sav. view in the month of Jan. However, I was styaing on cash. It is my understanding that upgrades when staying on DVC points are extremely rare. I have never heard of one, if that means anything.

We were given upgrades twice. Both were during special occasions but it may have just been coincidence as we didn't inform Disney of what we were celebrating.

In December 2004 on our engagement trip we were upgraded to a Savannah view at AKL and during our honeymoon at the Poly in May of 2006 we were upgraded to a castle view room. I feel weird about asking for free things and didn't tell them we were on our honeymoon....but the castle view room was like a dream come true.

I am not all that sure that that is accurate. Online check in has only been out for around a year and it came to be in a time when free upgrades are as rare as hens teeth so we really have no data to base that on. It is also my understanding that online check in really has little to do with getting or not getting a free upgrade if one is available.

We've never gotten an upgrade but we have friends who stayed at the Swan in September and they mentioned it was their anniversary at check-in and got upgraded to a suite!
Make sure to mention you're on your honeymoon-you never know what'll happen!

Congratulations and have a great trip!

We were booked at the Contemporary Tower Bay Lake view for our anniversay a few years ago and we ended up on the 14th (top) floor with a Magic Kingdom view. It was an incredible upgrade!

Swan and Dolphin are no Disney Resorts, they have a kind of special status on property because their guests get EMH but they don't have the other benefits.

It is not really a special status they just choose to pay Disney to have EMH added as their resort benefits. This option is also available to the resorts on Hotel Plaza Blvd but to date only the Hilton does it.

We got one last Sept. The trip was planned around our engagement at CRT. About a month before I received an email offering me to upgrade from POP to a villa at Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. Needless to say, THAT was a huge upgrade and Disney went ALL OUT in making the whole trip unbelievably memorable for us. So check your email, you might get lucky like I did!

On my Dec '08 trip, I mentioned I was playing "tour guide" to 3 newbies (my sister, great niece & nephew). I had booked a Garden room at the Contemporary. Got to the resort around 10, was told our room wasn't ready, to which I replied no problem, I didn't expect it to be, we were heading to the park and would call later in the afternoon. Headed back to the resort around 4PM, stopped at the desk to get our room number, and found we'd been upgraded to a tower room, MK view. Pretty sweet.

Back in 2006 my family and I were upgraded from Pop Century I believe, to Saratoga Springs. We've been going for years and since Saratoga was brand new it was definitely an attempt to join DVC but it worked out for us all the same. I loved Saratoga and would probably make it my home resort if/when I join the DVC.:)
