What a great race! Fun to run and it was a great course.
We left last night at 5:00 with the intentions of possibly making the American Idol finals, but easily making packet pick-up by 8:00. Tampa traffic had other ideas. Because of an off-the-road fender-bender and the typical rubber-neckers, it took us an hour to go 6 miles.
Our usual 90 minute trip turned into a 2:45 fiasco. We pulled into WWoS at 7:50, easily one of the last registrants of the night. Then, I had the brilliant idea of catching Illuminations since we had an hour before Epcot closed. Wrong. Illuminations starts at 8:00 on Friday nights now.
We got to the Studios at 6:00 this morning for the race. This first pic is the newest technology in timing devices. You run it through your laces and it's yours--no one cuts it off. I kinda like it; it's much easier to use than that chip.
When we drove to the Studios, the south entrance was blocked off, so everyone had to enter from the north. We parked in Stage, and walked over to Television. There was a huge temporary building set up in the far upper corner of the parking lot and this is where latecomers could pick up their packets. The start and finish was also here. Sports personalities that came up on stage before the race began were Karl Ravech of Baseball Tonight, John Anderson of NFL Live, Trey Wingo of SportsCenter, and professional beach volleyball player Misty Mae Traynor. She walked the race, rehabbing a torn Achilles tendon. Ouch!
The race began going the opposite direction of normal traffic flow near the south Studios entrance. We ran through the ticket booths, almost up to World Drive, u-turned through the ticket booths. Took a left into Studios through a side entrance by LMA, ran towards LMA, turned right into it and ran down the straightaway closest to the stands, seeing ourselves run on the big screen. Through LMA and past the Earful Tower, turning back through the costuming area of the Backlot Tour. Through the streets of San Fran and NY, past Star Tours, up past Indy and Sounds Dangerous, around the back of the Hat, down to Hollywood Blvd, past RnR, backstage behind ToT, coming out near Fantasmic!, down a slight hill, back out on Hollywood Blvd, to the front of the park, backstage by the information center for the Studios, and then to the finish. It was a fun course to run!
Waiting for the race to start.
Harlem Globetrotters working the crowd.
Miami Dolphin cheerleaders. I saw them at the finish, but I missed the G-trotters completely.
Turning the final corner.
I always look "mad" when I run in a race, though I'm not. Anyways, cool medal, much better than I expected.
I'll need to get a better picture of it.
