It was better plain, but if you search for this on the fourm, you will see we already discussed it, and you can see what others feel about it. :D

It will be up for 10 years from the date it was put up. So 10 years after 2000, prob around 2010 i would expect it to come down

i like it

Lord God that thing is an atrocity! At least with the Big @$$ Hat they aren't defacing an engineering marvel.

I can't even post my true feelings here about it because that would be worth a ban for life. Spaceship Earth had such a sleek design, so elegant and soothing. Now with that BAH sized pimple hanging off the side of it SE looks cheap and gaudy, kind of like how the rest of WDW is turning into. :(

I don't mind it all that much...I mean, I HATED it when it first went up but it's kinda growing on me.

Do you wanna know what really gets me though...
The word "Epcot" like...the "WORD" It's not a WORD

It's E.P.C.O.T.

Little kids growing up will NOT know that EPCOT STANDS FOR SOMETHING...and is not just a name that popped into someone's head. Walt had a vision for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow...not a vision for Epcot.

Sorry...I know this may sound trivial to about 99.9% of people out there...but I know there's that .1% that KNOWS what I'm talking about.

Yeah, but the park isn't EPCOT now. It's just plain old Epcot. The name doesn't stand for anything.

true true.. didnt they take out the "center" part of "epcot center" because everyone kept calling it Epcot. I ... like Epcot better then Epcot Center... I dont know.. just my opinion... and I forgot to put in my first post.. I like what they've done with the hand wand.. words.. whatever. As long as it isnt like neon hot pink or anything im fine with it... It doesnt look all THAT BAD. Neither does that wonderful hat.

The Epcot sign was not complete until May 2001. The 2000 was above Spaceship Earth from Oct 1999 - Jan1, 2001 for the millenium celebration. I prefer SE with nothing above it.

Epcot opened in 1982 as EPCOT Center and was to be a permenant park with varying attractions coming and going. In the late 80's, when the Disney characters were added, the "Center" was dropped, and to reaffirm that that attractions were ideally supposed to come and go like a permenant World's Fair, the name would have the corresponding year in it (EPCOT '96) and so on. When the concept of the changing attractions was dropped, EPCOT '99 was dropped, and the park became simply Epcot. Epcot is now a word recognized in the english language and I believe that one of the collegiate dictionaries actaully has an entry in it with Epcot as a proper noun.

This is my understanding of the names... If I have any of the details wrong, please correct them.

Also,
When I first heard about the giant hand, the first thought that went through my head was of the pepto cake. When I saw the hand, I wondered how we ever felt so strongly about Spaceship Earth's iconic standing without the hand. Yes, it is the icon of the park, but further to that, the Sorceror Mickey's hand does add to the Epcot experience because it reinforces those idea's and values that Walt was instilling into this strange new world he was creating in Florida. The Mickey hand is a very tiny reminder of the ultimate dream of the modern worlds first dreamer and innovator. Long live the Sorcerer Mickey hand, spreading magic dust on the centerpiece of the World. Now, the stupid laser-etched marble things......

Sorry guys, but I'm joining the minority of voters - I like it. I think it makes SE a better focal point rather than just "another attraction"
Don't get me wrong -I don't think that there's anything wrong with the way SE looks it just adds a little "je ne sais pas"

It doesn't look that bad, but I guess I'm old-fashioned..I prefer SE to stand alone by itself. I remember walking around EPCOT and we would periodically stop and just look at SE ( from across the Lagoon or within Future World). The Mickey wand just takes a little bit away from it, in my opinion.

By the way, remember how after the original Illuminations how they used to project the spinning globe on SE? I thought that was so beautiful!:)

I don't like it. It looks more ominous without the epcot and wand on it. I was ok with teh 2000 thing and figured they would take it down afterwards, which they should have done. It just doesnt look like it belongs. I mean, when you see spaceship earth, you know it's epcot, you don't need a sign telling you that.
just my opinion.

I know what you are talking about, so I guess I am that .1% you are talking about. Sounds like we are stuck in the past compared to everyone else here huh?

Time for a bit of grim news (from me? wow... )

The Hand was DESIGNED to last only 10 years...but by all means this does NOT mean they will not rehab it or re-hash it to last longer...

My opinion on it? I hate it...I think its a real eyesore and it puts a big stain on one of my childhood memories...

>>>The Hand was DESIGNED to last only 10 years<<<

For all the steel they have wasted building that ugly POS it should last much longer than that.

I thought the 2000 sign was pretty cool and I tihnk thats why they put up the EPCOT sign. I think people liked the 2000 sign because they thought it would only be temporary. But Disney took It down and just put another sign up.

I agree with you. SE is such a structural marvel that it takes away some of it when you see the wand next to it... I was there while the put the 2000 up and it looked cool and a way to remind you in your pictures of what year you were there, but after that, I don´t think the word "Epcot" is neccesary on top of SE.

Also, WDWFreak, I am part of that 1% who understand what you are talking about, but I´m afraid to tell you that Epcot used to stand for "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow", but not anymore. Since they started with the Millennium Celebration, it was taken away, cast members (myself included) were told to encourage the fact that it didn´t stand for that anymore, and Epcot became a single word to name that park. I understand your pain because we all know where it came from, but such is life... :animwink:
