Epcot Power Outage 12/3?

The power glitch occurred around 11:45 and took down pretty much everything. I was Body Wars tower at the time, and I thought it was just us at first. Then the radio activity started picking up... Fun!

My friend and I went on Body Wars and Cranium Comand Sunday morning... I would not want to be stuck in the head of a 12 year old child when the power goes out!! :lookaroun

*SIDE NOTE: Also did "The Making of Me", talk about feeling very uncomfertable at Disney. I never thought I would see Sperm injected into an Egg @ WDW

 Bring in the grief counselors!

Some woman was trapped for half an hour on Spaceship Earth and was demanding that they keep the attractions that were down in the morning open an extra hour and a half to accommodate her family, because this was their only day at Epcot. (I kid you not.) Generally, I would suggest that such "constructive suggestions" be shared with guest services and not the CM in front of the tip board. I was far too fascinated by the CM's various excuses about why the tip board said that the disabled attractions had wait times still posted for them to share that suggestion with the complaining woman, though...

Is your day REALLY ruined because the wait time said it was 60 minutes when the ride was down for a short time?!?!?!?!?!?!? I swear some people get worked up over dumb stuff when on vacation or when Christmas shopping.

Again it was the mrs. her fault using that darn old vacuum cleaner...

Again I told her what would happen and that she would shut down the whole grid... :lookaroun

Again she wouldn't listen... *sigh*

 Women...

.

I thought it was when they plugged in the Christmas lights....
...kinda like what happened when I did it (again)

There will noone on the beam while it's hot...

In a case someone needs to be up there, that section will be shut down first.

I sadly was one of the cast members at TipBoard today. I got everything from "Thanks A lot" to "whatever" to "are you going to give me back my money?"

I was over at innoventions west when this happened. The lights flickered and all of innoventions west went down. When a power outage happens, we need to direct guest out of the building. I was asked "Why?" and I just told them we're experiencing some issues and to please come back later.

I was then bumped off to Tip Board for a good 2 hours!! And that's when the magic began :lookaroun

Like if it was my fault, they started yelling at me and fellow cast members. We just directed them to guest relations and we reassured them that they were working on the problem. =/ What a day jeesh!!

God bless you for that man, you and all the other CMs that have to take a lotta mess from guest like that, not only in bad situations but the everyday type things too. If no one else can say it, I will, I appreciate you.

I remember an outage like this being on the news while I was down in Orlanda some years back, they made MK stay open about 3 hrs. later and they did something else, but I cant remember what it was.

So where does Disney World get its electricity from anyway? I heard a rumor that they self-generate their electricity by hydropower--water rushing through turbines under the various lakes and lagoons. Is that true or was it just talk in the bar at the Polynesian?

Hmmm... in the bar? One too many drinks I`m afraid.

WDW has the Central Energy Plant in the North Service Area; using a CHP system of twin gas turbine engines in 1971 it could generate almost all the power needed. Now I think it`s closer to 40%.. although a 3rd turbine was added in later years.

There is also a smaller one east of Futureworld, built for EPCOT Center.

The rest of WDWs energy needs, apart from some small scale solar projects, is the same as any business - it`s bought from power companies.

You did a good job. Really. My sister and I actually stood to one side and watched (what I now assume was) you and another CM handle the angry guests. We talked to each other afterward about the fact that we felt bad for you and that you were both handling it really well. I didn't expect to be able to say it to you directly... but good on ya.

Anyone still curious as to why it really went out?

For those still curious, an amplifier in Innoventions West blew, tripping circuit breakers around the park. It was just a simple matter of reseting and restarting the rides. It was a pretty fast return this time around vs. last time (special EMH night).

 @ Special EMH night! Now what a waste and this one happened at 11:45 and the rides didn't come back on untill 1 something till 2 something. It was a good long time before the rides started up again.

The amplifier in innoventions did blow but how could that cause the whole future world outage?

This may be entirely wrong...

But I seem to recall that when M:S was coming online we last heard of Epcot's power outages. I think maybe having Wonders and M:S along with all of the other attractions online at once at Epcot is just too much on the system.

I know back when Epcot had the outages before, M:S coming online was rumored to be the cause. Now, they start operating Wonders attractions regularly and there are two failures...?

About Disney's power.. (could be totally wrong, just an urban legend) I've heard that they actually buy it from Tampa Electric (TECO). The Mouse Ears tower you see when you drive on I-4 East (from Tampa) is actually a gift from TECO for the contract.

Actually it appears that they buy electricity from numerous sources and Tampa Electric is one of them. Florida Power Corporation, Orlando Utilities Commision, and Orlando Cogeneration.

That includes 5 different connection points with main tranmission lines.

Glad I don't have to pay that bill.

Surely there is emmergency platform lighting.... isn`t there?
unless things have changed lots which they could have in 10 years but i doubt it. i recall around this time in 96 wdw was having LOTS of power problems, it was crazy watchint the outside lights flicker at the GRAND, while the monorail beams had power some of the stations didnt. for instance at ttc, we pulled in, it was PITCH BLACK, they had parking cm's in pickup trucks pulled up between the old wardrobe area, ferry boat dock & 3 monorail ramps using the trucks headlights so people could see where they were going. i know i personally called reedy creek & talked to a lady about the safery issue this posed, i think mk mayb had one or 2 lights for that large station & poly had one. otherwise standard emergence lights were not a high priority in monorail stations especialy in the stingy eisner/pressler era.

The amp caused a power surge across the Future World powergrid. The surge triggered the safeties on the attractions, and they shut themselves down. Innoventions West was evacuated because there was an electrical smell.

M:S uses a significant amount of power, and it does put strain on the powergrid with Wonders now open as well. In this case however, it was merely the attractions built in safeties (like a complex surge protector) that shut them down.

Ah, something similar happened last month at my school with the fire alarm... Science project... Smoke detectors... Yeah... ^^;

Anyway, lets hope less power outages occur.
