When the rules were first established on the photo contests, as they were stated, if it can be done in a darkroom, it's ok. It is actually entirely possible to add a border in a darkroom... in fact, it's rather easy.

I don't view it as ethical if a person enters a contest with a digitally or darkroom added border, however due to the original spirit of the rules, it is technically allowed.

Since i took Photo 1 last spring.. I now know what is possible.. and a boarder is possible in a darkroom...any of them are... you just need to do it right... (in fact dodging, burning, and mixing photos is too.. we experimented with it)

it depends how much editing was done... you can only do so much in a darkroom...

lots of things are possible in a darkroom. You're right. What needs to be clarified is at what point does it stop being a photograph and start being a collage?

Obviously 3D rendering and any photoshop filtering is out. Adding and removing elements is out as well... but what about overlaying? That's easily done in a darkroom. Should it be allowed? Let's decide

Well, "TheOneVader"'s pic has a border that can't be done in a darkroom without a serious amount if skill, and I mean serious. In any editing program, it takes 5 seconds.

In the original contests we also had the rule that you couldn't crop your photos either. It COMPLETELY changes the photo and is a huge training wheel to those who couldn't frame a picture to save their life. Allowing cropping is as bad as allowing anything else that photoshop can do. There's no pride in entering or winning these contests with a cropped photo. Why? Because you didn't take a good photo. You took a mediocre photo (at best), and then chopped of the parts that made it look like crap.

It's a photo contest, which means it should be an unedited photo, PERIOD. It takes very little effort to import a photo into an editing prgram and crop, change levels, brightness/contrast, add borders, etc.

I have an insane amount of photos that I could alter in Photoshop and win every damn contest put up in these forums, but I don't do it. Why? Don't care. These stupid votes are just a side show to what the real point to these "contests" are. If you REALLY care about winning these contests, I suggest you see a mental health professional. I like to see WDW enthusiasts share their PHOTOS with one another. RARE photos. UNIQUE photos. Photos taken that show some TALENT. Photos that show what a great time they had at WDW.

As for the duplicate AA photo. Whoops. I don't pay any attention to what I submitted in the past. I just go into my photos and grab a good one. I have several others that would be great to submit, but I guess I like this one. Why??? It's RARE. ;)

That's why I voted for it the first time around

And great post! :sohappy:

Not aimed at any individual in the tread, the following is my opinion on recent contests:

It gets very depressing when so many of these contests turn into slagging matches, rule picking, I'm better than you boasts and pimping for votes.

There is no prize at stake - unless your life is so devoid that winning a comparison of holiday snaps contest becomes something high on your agenda.

As for the no manipulation rule - I believe the spirit of that was so that people with point an shoot capabilities would not be frightened away when they saw fully tweaked images that had been made perfect in photo shop. A simple crop is easily within the means of the most basic digital photographer.

Keep on bickering like this and more people will desert the contests and you'll have nobody to run the contest - who wants to put up with all the unnecessary abuse.

That's why I like the creative media contest...

Wanna tweak it? SURE! Go ahead and tweak as much as you want!

As long as it isn't animated and fits the dimensions... whatever! :D

Is it not one used over The Pond? Short for "snap shot".
Well, a "snap shot" is a phrase that was probably used more often back in the day. Today, it's rare to hear, as people usually say "picture."

I like "snap", though. In fact, I'd like to see a list of everday words used over where you are in comparison to here in the US. I'm sure I could find one on the net somewhere. I need a new, easy to learn, lingo. :D
