Any word if anything that resembles the old walkway fiberoptic light patterns may return when this is done?
we would love walking by all those awesome patterns at night after Illuminations.

Confirmed that all sorts of lighting, including ground lighting, will be a part of the new plaza.

I'm confused about what this finished area and communicore building (and immediate area) will offer in terms of attractions. What will there be to do in this area, besides Moana? Shows perhaps on that Communicore Plaza? What else? Not being fresh want to understand what the end result is.

I don’t think there has been much clarification on what CommuniCore plaza will offer other than festival space. There will be the Walt statue.

They’re different components. The fiber optics are not the light source, which will almost certainly be LED which have rightly replaced a lot of bulb types.
Right, the fiber is just the delivery mechanism for the light source. But just slapping the LEDs in is cheaper, so that's what they do. They can't even be bothered to match the simple fiber-optic "show" from the 90's anymore.

The LEDs are not just cheaper, but also generally longer lasting and more energy efficient. They really are great, even for show applications and could easily be used to replicate the old mechanical effect without the need for moving parts. LEDs themselves are not the problem.

I don't disagree. Imagine, though, using fiber-optics to spell "EPCOT" in the cement near this circle thing that's replacing the Fountain of Nations. Every minute, the word 'magically' shows up in a different color, and every few minutes they use the color-changing abilities of the LEDs to create some cool rainbow effects. It's a little thing, it would draw people, and actually could 'wow' some people. Throw a few fireworks fiber-optic effects into the cement to boot and you'd have something really nice for everyone (how many kids LOVED the old fiber-optics in the cement?). They could even go further and have lights appear to be 'chasing' each other, other patterns...
